This nation is at wary You may not have realized the fact, but it is a fact just the same. You may have the idea that this is a solders', war. If so you are correct, hut you may be mistaken in the number and personal of all the soldiers. This term should and does embrace every man, woman and child in the United States, but every one in his own sphere. Some must needs stay at home to form the support line. If the support line fails, all in front of it must fail. In the Liberty Loan drive now on Mr. A. L. Jagoe is the gener al in charge; Messrs. G. H. Shelton and G. W. Cole are brigadiers under him. The chairmen of the different com mittees are the colonels; the committee members are the majors, captains and lieutenants. The volunteer workers are the sergeants and corporals and the masses are the privates. If any one of these in the support line fails to do his whole duty he is just as much , to be condemned as would be one of the soldiers in the front line trenches in France. The work of the one is as necessary as the work of the other. Our objec tive has been set as definitely as that of any division at the front. The task set for this country is $271,000. We must accom plish this, or more. We m'ust do it in the time set, or before1. The boys over yonder sometimes go beyond their objectives, and there is no reason why we should not. You will be called on to do a definite part, consider well be fore you allow yourself to fail. Nothing but your best is worthy, you must even make some sacri fice, t Buy bonds before it's verboten. Idle dollars are pro-German. Liberty Bonds or German bondage. "Come across" or the Kaiser will. The soldiers give; you must lend. Liberty Bonds or German taxes. Buy over here to, win over there. It's billions for defense or billions for indemnity. For bonds. They are caused by our loving friends. Wn catch "cold" in precisely the sanKi way that we catch diphtheria, by ex posure to a previous case in another person. Here is a little lesson which should be taught every child in school: EVERY COLD IS CAUSED BY A TRANSFER OF GERMS. FROM ONE PERSON TO AN OTHER. , How are the germs transferred? Oh, that is easy enough. The open-face sneeze does the trick. The unmuzzled cough does it. A kiss will do it ad sure as shooting. Careful scientific tests have repeat edly shown that when we sneeze, cough, laugh or talk without holding a handkerchief over the , , nose and mouth, a' fine, Invisible spray of saliva or secretion from the nose Is given off, and this spray carries, as a $ile, for some four or five feet from the face. Therefore, if a susceptible person sits or stands within five feet from the pa tient who has a "simple cold" or a sim ple sore throat, and the patient sneezes or coughs openly, the fine droplets of moisture may carry direct ly to that susceptible person's nose or mouth, and tomorrow the victim wl'l discover that he has been foolish enough to leave off his overshoes or sit in a draft or something like that. At any rate, by tomorrow the germs have got him, and he has some kind of alleged "cold." Now, if every mother's son and father's daughter of us were conscien tious enough and polite enough to muz Vie the mouth and nose when sneez Ing or coughing, with handkerchief, folds of ctafh, or even the- hand If there isn't time to get out these other things, why, the patient with a "cold" would not be a menace to all his as sociates. In well-conducted hospitals for men ingitis, diphtheria, scarlet fever, pneu monia and ether diseases known to bd spread through discharges from nose and throat, every nurse and physiciai nowadays wears a face mask of two or three layers of plain gauze or cheesecloth as a protection against ac cidental spraying by patients. This face mask has been found a prettv certain preventive of seHous sore throat among nurses and physicians caring for such patients. The mask catches and holds any floating droplets of moisture which may perhaps be laden with germs. A mask is as good as a mile, and bet ter than gallons of alleged antiseptics. DO YOU KNOW THAT Poor health Is expensive? Flyless town has few funerals? It's worry and not work whicJi shortens life? Pneumonia kills over 120,000 Ameri cans each year? The well that drains the cesspool is the cup of death? A cold bath every morning Is the best complexion remedy? The U. S. Public Health Service ha3 reduced malaria 60 per cent in some localities? The death rate from typhoid fever in the United 'States has been cut in half since 1900? If baby has fever or acute diarrhoea stop the milk and send for the doctor. Don't give the baby tea, coffee, beei or "soft drinks" of any kind. Don't let any person who has tu berculosis handle or nurs? the baby ir-HiiMV,.. y-Jn. JF6-A.. f$zm. mm i-ww SUBSCRIBE!
