Congress reconvened Wednes day from its holiday Vacation. Theodore Thomas, the noted orchestra leader, died of pneu monia in Chicago last Tuesday. A cable from Constantinople states that the ruler of Turkey has forbidden the sale of Bibles n the streets of that city. The New Drleans Street Rf U way system has been forced ir \o the hands of a receiver. The con cern is capitalized at $80,000,000. A Kentucky firm owning six distilleries* offers to buy a hun dred thousand bales of cotton at 7£ cents per pound, to be paid for in whisky. Oklahoma Territory is also eliminating the cotton surplus by the fire route, a special stating that sixfy bales were burned near Shawnee Monday. The 'Suprama C ■ '\w if - firmed the verdict of the circuit court in the Ed. Qaminon case and has fixed Saturday, February 11th as the day rf his execution, Hon. Oliver Clifton, mayor elect of Jackson, Miss-, died last Sunday of pneumonia, aged 58 years. Mr. Clifton had served two terms as mayor of his city, and on several occasions as chair* man of the State Democratic Ex ecutive Committee. Sevea hundred of the citizens of Newport, Ark,, took Louis All white, a white maD, aged 43 years, to a railroad trestle near the town and swung him into eternity, All* white and his son had murdered two married women on Christ mas morning. For some unex plained reason the young man was not lynched. Texas courts hold that a free citizen of that State has no right to burn bis cotton or other farm products. The law in that State is “that no person shall wilfully and mischievously injure or de stroy any growing fruit, grain or other like agricultural products. If convicted he shall be punished by a fine not exceeding $l,000•’, An Illinois man, crazed by drink, held his wife down on the railroad track and both were killed before the engineer could stop bis engine and the entire train passed over their bodies, grinding them to pieces. The wife had gone to town to take her husband away from some drunk en companions, with the above re sult. The Philadelphia Ledger says of the Italians, who are showing a tendency to emigrate to the Southern States: “Italians are industrious and thrifty, and are as a rule excellent farmers, mar ket gardeners, and tradesmen In the parts of the South where the Italians have settled, they have achieved a decided success as truck growers and in other employments. It is not thought the fall of Port Arthur will affect the course of the war further than to make Russia more desperately stub born in its continmance. Change in Clerks. As announced two weeks ago, VI. A. Seymour was appointed by Ohanoery Olerk Trusty to suc ceed Miss Blythe Haile, resigned, is his deputy at Coffeeville. Mr. Seymour has since been appoint ed deputy circuit clerk by Mr. L. L. Blount, and has assuemed the duties of the offices.' In losing the services of Mies Haile the county is deprived of a pleasant and most efficient official, vhile in securing Mr. Seymour it has a capable, energetic and ac commodating man. [State Items.
