J. J. CALDWELL, Sherijf Panola C.
July, 13th 1846.
SELF-M ADE M EN-SA M.HOUSTON.
The many self-made men who, from
the most humble beginnings, have ele
vated themselves to the highest rank,
and are now in Congress, are charac
teristic traits in the history of our
countrymen, and show how superior
nature is to artificial embellishment,
and what perseverance and indoranioly
energy will finally effect.
"Look at this newspaper," said ono
senator recently to another; see how
that scamp abuses me."
"iTell, the freedom of the press must
bo sustained. There is no 'divine
right"' which exempts senators from its
scrutiny.1'
"Very true; but the ungrateful hound
of an editor should never have attacked
me. Why, sir, he came info our vil
lage a ragged fellow, and 1 bought the
cloth and made him the first good suit
of clothes he ever wore."
"The devil you did! Why, then;
you are a tailor?"
'To be sure I am."
"Why, how came you to be a lawyer?"
"Oh, that was ono of the contingen
cies of getting on the world. I was a
common soldier under Gen. Jackson
through the Indian wars, and besides
that honor, I bid fair to become a com
mon drunkard; and when I got back
to our village, I got into so many
scrapes and whipped so many fellows
that I was thrown into jail for sher
iff's fees."
"How did you manage to get out of
that difficulty ?"
"Why, finally my brother paid the
costs, and invtted mo to -study law with
hi
m."
"You made rapid progress, no doubt?"
'Not very rapid. The difficulty
was, that I had never learnt to read; so
I cduca'eJ myself, and studied law at
the same time got admitted went
farther west got into practice got
into the Legislature got in'o Congress
and ecc? signum, here I r.m in the
Senate."
That senator is a sensible, well in
formed, intelligent citizen, fi for any
station. Sam Houston, Senator from
Texas, is another of those rough and
remarkable g"ms like the rocky and
sterile surface of the Alleghanics, full
of mineral riches beneath. Sam was,
orginally a carpenter in Nashville
turned out the shavings from his plane
and resolved to go ahead while making
grooves and mortices and nailing tip
posts and sashes. He became Governor
of Tennessee, fought as a common sol
dier in the Indian wars, and secured
h)' his courage and perseveranco, the
liberty and independence of Texas
"There, said Gen. Jackson, having
a map of Texas before him "There
is ihe Colorado-there is Bexar there's
the Alamo? Now, if the Mexicans
separate their forces and come down
this pass, and Sam can catch 'em under
the brow of that
range
of hills, he'll
lick 'em, and take Sar.ty Anny. You'll
seel"" m ;
Just as the old General predicted, so
it turned out at San Jacinto. The Eng
lish wo;jld have made Gen. Houston a.
duke for achieving such a victory. We
tee the progress of events: Gen Hous--
ton is in the Senate.
One dark, stormy evening, some
years ago, a little after tea time, we
wejre coming down Nassua street, and,
cn turning down Fulton, came upon a
tall athietic man, 'wrapped in a blue
J cloak
