AS WE SEE IT THIS WEEK at the Pascagoula-Moss Point Bank Mr. Ben Ichiyasu, representing several tuna boat operators on the West Coast, spent a week with us studying local condi tions. His studies and observation included housing, lpcal small boat shipyards, the various bottoms of the Mississippi Sound and outside water temperatures. It is em^uraging to note that our West Coast friends are sending their technical men here for intensive studies. ***£** The Gull Coast Marine Research Laboratory is gaining in prominence with our state officials. A legislative committee headed by Senator Junkin of Adams County will make in spections. Included on thei^ agenda is an inspection of our deep river project. We are glad that they are coming to see us. Jackson County must gain its rightful place in our state’s ex pansion program. It is our belief that this committee will be favorably impressed with our program. We must do all that we can to get further help at the next session of the Legislature. ****** We congratulate Mr. Arthur Spratley upon being accepted as a Junior Examiner for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corpora tion. Arthur is an energetic, alert young man and we are pround that he is being honored. We wish continued happiness and success for him and Mrs. Spratley, who at one time worked with us, too. ****** The Mississippi Coast Council will hold its regular meeting at Gulfport on July 20th. We are having as our guests the entire State Highway Commission and engineers, Board of Supervisors of all coast counties, the Mayors, Boards of Aider men and City Councilmen and the press. Social Events Mrs. Charles Bratt and two1 sons, Burton and Francis, of Gulf port were weekend guests of her j ‘ mother, Mrs. M. S. McIntosh. They were joined on Sunday by Mr. Bratt for the drive home. Harry Levy returned on Sun day from Philadelphia where he spent his vacation. Mrs. Albert Broussard left on Wednesday for Berwick, La., where she will v Fs i t her sister, Mrs. Kimbrell Evans and her family. Barbara Suthoff and Judy Mc Vay left on last Thursday for Monroeville, Ala., where Bar bara will visit for several days. Mrs. A. W. Head and Bob Head spent the weekend in Magee where they visited Mrs. Head’s father, T. L. Stegall. Former Chancellor A. B. Amis, eminent jurist of Mississippi, who was the brother of Mrs. Bertha Rape died in Meridian on last Wednesday. Among those attend ing the funeral in Meridian were Nat'Rape of Gulfport and Alvin and Wayne Amis of Gulfport. Misses Frances and Bettie Sue Pittman of Jackson spent several days last week in the home of their grandmother, Mrs. Medora Cirlot. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Caruso and sons, Eric and Bill, drove to Big Creek on Saturday. Mr. Caruso returned after the weekend but Mrs. Caruso and the boys will remain for a longer visit wjith her mother. Mrs. Duncan McDonald spent the weekend in Meridian where she visited her mother, Mrs. C. W. Brooks. Gordon Hase has gone to Fair field, Ala., where he will spend his vacation at the home of his 1 parents. Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Byrd and young daughter, Ann, left on Sat urday for Greenville, S. C. where they will make their future home Mr. ByrcC who has been em ployed by the Mississippi Export has accepted a position with the Greenville and Northern Railway company there. Mr. and Mrs. Harry O. Phillips left on last Wednesday for Kos ciusko where they were called by the illness of Mr. Phillips' mother. Mrs. Gertrude Lightsey of Nat chez Is the guest of Dr. and Mrs. R. C. Eley. Miss Mae Mclnnis, who has been visiting in the home of her sis ter, Mrs. W. H. McGruder, in Starkville, returned home this week. ___ i_ Mr. and Mrs. Albert Goff and young daughter, Inez, of Green wood were guests the latter part of last week of Mr. ’and Mrs. W. H. Suthoff. Mrs. Goff spent her girlhood here and will be remem bered as Idella Prouse. Mrs. J. C. Phillips and Mrs. Harold Wright of Tulsa were guests last week of Mr. and Mrs. T, H. Dickson. They left on Sun day for Minneapolis where they will visit Mrs. Wright’s sister, Mrs. Chester Hubbel. Miss Duvergne Watts left on Tuesday for New York for sev eral weeks. Mrs. J. Steinberg of Philadel phia, who has been the guest of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Steinberg, left on Friday to return to her home. Misses Pollye Franklin, Edna Khayat and Peggy Suthoff are expecting to leave on Monday for Lake Junalusa, N. C., where they will attend a two weeks’ meeting of the Young Peoples’ conference of the Methodist church. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cunning ham and three children of Tusca loosa have been spending the week at their home here while visiting relatives. Miss Pat Hawkins of Gulfport was the guest of Miss Edna Kha yat last weekend. Richard Delacroix of New Or leans, is the guest of his cousin, Carroll Canfield. Miss Lois Dickson, who is a student nurse at the Touro In firmary school of nursing in New Orleans, arrived Monday for a month’s vacation at her home here. The Rev. A. C. Ingram of Bo galusa, La., accompanied by Misses Nancy and Willie Claire Ingram drove over on Thursday. Mr Ingram returned to Boga lusa later in the afternoon but the Misses Ingram remained for a longer visit in the home of their brother-in-law and sister, the Rev. and Mrs. Walter Bader. Mrs. Otto Seward and Mrs. Eb Hinson of Philadelphia, Miss, left on Wednesday to return home after a,, visit in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack BuZard. Miss Florence Blanchard, who has received her master’s degree from Tulane upon the completion of her work there, is expected to arrive on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Ziglar, 231 No. Frederic street, and son, Jimmy, returned Wednesday from Brundridge, Ala. where they were called by the sudden death of Mr. Ziglar’s uncle, J. O. Ziglar. Their other son, Larry, is vaca itoning with his cousin, Foy Scroggins, and other relatives at Yazoo City. Dennis Hannah of Water Val ley and his son and daughter-in law, Mr. and Mrs. Hilton Hannah and baby of Batesville, Miss, de parted for their homes Thursday of last week after a visit with Mr. Dennis Hannah’s mother, Mrs. M. P. Hannah and his brother-in law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Ar jthur Allen. Mrs. E. L. Ball and children de parted Saturday for residence in Charleston, W. Va. Mrs. Joe Loe and son, Billy, depart Friday for visits with Mrs. Loe’s sisters, Mrs. H. W. Brown at Texarkana, and Mrs. Pat Deno at Camden. Pas cagoula street. Saturday marked the departure * of Mrs. Frank Fisher and chil dren to join Dr. Fisher for resi dence at Milam, Tenn., where Dr. Fisher is stationed at the Arsenal I Plant. During the weekend, Mr. and Mrs. V. P. DeJean had their en tire family around them at a fam ily reunion. Those from out-of town were Mr. and Mrs. Morris DeJean and daughter, Brenda Sue, of San Francisco, Calif., who are on a month’s leave, Miss Julia Mae DeJean, who is on a week's vacation and Miss Marguerite De Jean, who came down from Jack son. Others present were Mr. and Mrs. Vernon DeJean and sons, Hayward and Wayne, and Mr. and Mrs. Valsin DeJean of Pas cagoula. Mrs. DeJean’s brother, Morris Munday of Clinton, who had planned to be in the group was delayed in coming from Clin ton until Wednesday. Mrs. John T. Nolan is expect ing the arrival of her grand daughter, Marie Louise Nolan of New Orleans, next w-eek for an extended visit. Starkville will arrive on Sunday for a visit in the home of Mr. Colmer’s mother, Mrs. Fritz Col mer. I / Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Cornell and son, Larry, and their guests, Mr. and Mrs. K. E. Neill and sons, Mickey and Dennis, spent Friday in New Orleans. On Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Neill and sons departed for their home in Newport News, via Florida, where they expect to visit interesting points before go ing back to Virginia. Mrs. Wade W. Hilliard and younger sons, Joe and John, re turned home during the weekend after spending three weeks with Mrs. Hilliard’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Shull, in Columbus, Miss. Mr. and Mrs. Shull and Mrs. Hil liard and Joe and John were vis itors to New Orleans, Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Don Corning spent the weekend visiting friends in New Orleans. Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Davis have as guests the latter’s brother-in law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. K. G. Pearce and children, Barbara and Bobby, who arrived Satur day from Matruin, Venezuela, S. A., where Mr. Pearce is connect ed with the Creole Oil Company. They plan to return home at the end of the month sailing from New Orleans aboard the SS Al cora, July 29. Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Gallaspy, 703 14th street, had as guests dur ing the mid-week Mr. and Mrs. Garland Gallaspy and son, Jim, of Hickory, Miss, and Mrs. Russell Gallaspy of Decatur, Miss., who returned to their homes Friday after two days of fishing and oth er sporis. Mrs. Cecil Rutledge and daugh ters, Betty Jean and Joyce Ann, left Monday for a vacation visit to Panama City. Sunday marked the departure of Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Shoemaker and the latter’s sister, Miss Cleo Ramsay for a stay in Panama City, they were accompanied by another sister, Miss Teeny Ram say of Ramsay Springs. Mrs. John M Berry of Plant, Fla., was a recent guest in the home of Mrs. Garnet Cameron with whom she spent a week. Mrs. C. G. Cowan and son.Con nel and daughter, Miss Mary Lou, returned Saturday from a motor trip to the West Coast where they visited Mrs. Cowan’s mother, Mrs. Ida Goff at Pasadena, Calif. They also stopped at Los Angeles, Hollywood and other points of interest. Mrs. C. A. Cudabsc has re turned to'Fulton, Miss, where she will be with her daughter, Mis. H. H. Yawn and fanriily. Mrs. Gene Clark and children, Gene, Jr., Linda and Charles, returned home Sunday after spending a week with Mrs. Clark’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Willis. They motored home to Biloari with Mr. and Mrs. Willis and their daughter, Miss Edna, who is visiting them, making the trip Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Willis also had as guest over the week end, Mrs. Willis’ sister, Mrs, Lena 1 Abney of Jackson. Mr. and Mrs. John Meyers and children, John, Jr., Patricia and Joan, returned to their home at, I New Orleans Monday after a vis- 1 it of ten days with Mr. Meyers’! sister, Mrs. Joseph Brown and, family at 502 12th street. On Sunday Miss Gloria Colie j left New York for Baltimore where she boarded a Waterman steamship for New Orleans where she is scheduled to arrive July 20. She will be met there by her parents, Captain and Mrs. H. II. Colle who will bring her home. The Rev. Harvey L. Smith and Mrs. Smith and children are vis iting in Covington, Tenn. On Thursday of last week Mrs. W. T. Harris drove to New Or leans to bring Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Ogle and children to Pasca goula where they will occupy an apartment with Mrs. J. W Wade while Mr. Ogle is on his vacation. He is chief radio technician with the US Coast Guard at New Or leans. Mr. and Mrs. Winston Nolan r.nd their small son, Wynn, were guests of the former’s mother, Mrs. John T. Nolan, for the week> end. Mrs. Nolan and son recently Joined Mr. Nolan for residence in Fort Walton, Fla. The Rev. Timothy J. Pugh of Covington, La., is spending this ; week with his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Martin. | Mrs. H. H. Ahrens and son, j Ted, are expected to arrive the early part of next week for a vis-1 it with the former’s son and i daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Ahrens at "The Oaks”, their \ country home. Mrs. Ahrens will remain for an extended visit but Mr. Ahrens will return to his home at Beaumont, Tex., after a stay of several days. Mrs. J. R, McGrath, the for mer Una Velcich, was one of the ten winners in a letter writing contest recently held over radio station WIS at Columbia and with her family was guest at a special entertainment in the Township auditorium in Columbia. While she is still under a doctor’s care, Mrs. McGrath is recovering nice ly from a recent serious illness, They now reside in Columbia, s. c. While Mr. Dees is attending a National Guard encampment at Fort Benmng, Mrs. Wilbur Dees and their children are visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Reed and other relatives at points in Tennessee. Mrs. Paul Laine of Franklin, La., is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Brettel at 640 Live Oak street. Misses Mybille and Mabel De geer of Corden, Ala., are divid ing visits between the homes of their sister, Mrs. F. W. Spicer and Miss Louise Spicer. Among those from other cities who came to attend the funeral of Mrs. M. L. Pol were Mrs. Allie Potter, Mrs. Stella Fernandez, Ernest Carter, Mrs. J. E. Mr. and Mrs. Gene St. Amant and son, Gene, Jr., of Hope, Ark., arrive Tuesday to visit with Mrs. St. Amant's mother, Mrs. John Smith, and brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Loran Bo sarge. Mr. and Mrs. Crawford Dees and children returned home Sat urday from Baton Rouge where they had been visiting Mrs. Dees’. sister, Mrs. Dewey Graham and family for several days. On their return to their home at Daisy-Vestry, Mr. and Mrs. N. V. Flurry were accompanied by their grandson, Bennie Rohr, who will spend part of his vacation from school with them. Mrs. Carl Rohr was moved to the home of her sisteh Mrs. Har ley Seay, Thursday from the Jackson County hospital where she underwent a major operation the preceding Thursday from which she is now recuperating nicely. Miss Gladys Quinn spent Mon day in New Orleans for a check up at Touro Infirmary where she has been under treatment, Mrs. Sam Byrd and daughter, Bonnie Sue, were among Pasca goulans visiting New Orleans Monday. Robert Farnsworth, who ar rived Thursday of last week for a visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Farnsworth, left Tues day for a stay in Houston, Tex. Miss Edna Strickland is ex pected home this week after a • t\vo weeks vacation with friends in Bern, N. C. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Mason have had as guests the latter's uncle and aunt. Mr. and Mrs. Claude Vance of Grenada, Miss. Interesting guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Gardner over the weekend were Mr. and Mrs. James H. Smith and chil dren, Gay and Jimmy of Atlanta, Ga., who left Tuesday for a sight seeing trip to New Orleans. Mrs. Gardner and her guests drove to Mobile Sunday to bring Mr. Gardner home for a short stay. He is aboard the Alcoa SS "Cor sair" which was in port for a few days. Billy Waters of Biloxi was a weekend guest of his brother-in law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Waters on Williams street. Mrs. Melvina Ellerman depart ed Saturday for her home in Sli dell, La., after a visit of a fort night with her son and daughter in-law, Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Eller man. Mrs. Ellerman’s father, James Dossett of Picayune also was their guest during the week end. Mr and Mrs. Bill Farmer had as guests over the weekend her mother, Mrs. Luther Lee and Miss Marilyn Rester of Picayune, and her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Lee of JJoga lusa. La. The elder Mrs. Lee was accompanied home by her grand / daughter. Miss Glenns, Lee, who has been visiting her. Mrs. J. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hofmister, 928 Telephone Road, had as guests during the weekend his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hof mister of Forest, and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Hofmister of Richton, and Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Hofmister of Biloxi. Captain and Mrs. John H. Mel lon are spending a week visiting relatives and friends at Dauphin Island and Bayou La Batre. Wednesday marked the depar ture of Mr. and Mrs. George Har rison and John C. Bowman for Pennsylvania where the Harri sons will visit relatives in Hat boro and Mr. Bowman in €ham bersburg. They plan to return August 1. Billy Miller has returned to Starkville after a visit with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Sanders. He was accompanied by his cousin, Martrar Sanders, who will visit relatives'‘there. On their return home from a visit in Houston, Tex., Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Guynn were accom panied by her sister.
