STCDYIXU THE COMET.
Th CotrUsUna of ih Astrono
mtn lathe iVtTil Observatory.
Tb following conclanioim tt tbe
eientist at tbe natal nbaervatory
. relative to the Meutlfjr, orbit aud
robuble fate of tbe comet visible
will be read with iureret:
Tbus all facta point to tbe con
cIukioii tbat 1 ben tbe present ele
ments are corrected they will be
found to correspond morn nenrlr
with those ot tbe 1880 comet. Ail
competent aaironoinera wboexiim
ine the question, in tbe light of the
fccta presented, will U88nt to the
sonnuuessot this conclusion. Tbe
most troublesome point in the caxe
ia tbe uimculty or uioMing
the period of the 1880 come
suddenly been reduced froiA 37
years to less tbau three. M tbe MIlVE
otner baud, it may bo said Unit it
1$ not absolutely news. try to make
ttiia supposition, for if the 1843
comet returned anywhere between
tho middle of March nnd the middle
of May in nny year tbe chances or
Ira being seen from the earth would
be almost nothing, becuuae it would
lava spprouched the nun from the
side opposite the earth, aud, after
pHRsinjr tery closely around, It
would bate gone Imck again nu the
aid opH)sJte the earth. Thus the
comet may have returned once or
1 twice, ot even ot'tener, in the inter
val between 1843 and 1880 without
bavlug been seeu troin the earth
Consequently, there nmy have been
a gradua! dimiuutton of periodic
time. If, however, there baa been
a auddeu reduction ot tbe periodic
time from 37 to a little more than
two years and a half, it follows, al
most certainly, that the next reduc
tion may be proorlioiiatety great.
We may even have tbe comet uiiixh.
ing into tbe sun next year. What
tbe results of that crash may be is
' a problem yet to be solved. It must
now lie conceded that a comet has
a aatiri nucleus. The nucleus of tbe
Wells comet was distinctly seen in
ad observation at the Dudley Ob
servatory on June 11 aud was esti
mated to be not less than 400 miles
iif diameter. Tbe nucleus of the
present comet Is probably much
greater, and when we remember
that this comet will rush turn ik
iuh with a velocity of 400 miles per
second, no one ran venture an ade
quate or accurate estimate of the
Instable consequences. Whenever
that event ahull happen it will be
important for astronomers to have
some warning. Fortunately the el
ements oj this comet indicate that
- it will be much longer iu view than
. were eitberot the comets in 1843 or
. 1880, so tlint there will be some
chance, to determine the torin of the
orbit, and compuie the time which
mart elapse before it comes back
again. Again, tins comet will
bare be advantage of having
exciteu most intense interest,
ana it win inereioro ue ou
served with n irequency and
oare such as have fallen to the lot
ot no comet in tho history of astron
ottiy. According to tbe present el
amenta tbe comet whs 16,000,000
mile train tue aim on September
mil, ana Txouu.uuv on tbe 21st.
)n tho former it was 103,000,000
fiiiiea irom tue earth, and on t he lat
ter 107,000,000 miles. It is tbus go
ing away both from tho sun and the
earthx Tliew is not the least doubt
ot this.
It will probably bent least A week

nny result which can be relied upon
us more tbau approximations to
the truth. . '
