lltcjDcmocriit-t;ir Till; AHFlli KAHTIlyrAKI ItcniArknbie Phenomena. A spcciul report from Mount Pleasant, opposite Charleston, sav that ii sink near theGcrmaii launch which, on iuesd.iy, was eife:tl.v lry km ml, is now lull or tiesh water, A ear Shelf street I here is a cabi occniiel tiy u colored man that is completely surrounded by yauniu cuasroa, extending through lh earth's surface for ten feet and ovei All around this there are sinks of fresh water and masses of mn with queer looking soft substance I iii.ik nave never seen Delorc. It is contended by many that i he inn. and other substances found nrouii the village are volcanic matter. Just after the first great shock on luesday night there was a decided and distinct smell of escaping sal phnriencid gas over the entire vd lage. The smell lasted throughout lUo night and was distinct m those localities where the cavities in the earth were most numerous. Some say that portions of the mud throw u up by the waterspouts are strongly impregnated with sulphur, and that small portions of sulphur can be found in the mud. Not far (roui Charleston on the road to Su 'inner- rillo extensive mounds of clay were thrown up, as also hillocks of sand, in most cases iu the shape of inverted cones, the hollow pails wtiicu Had evidently heen formed by the action of the water returning into Iho depths from which it had been raised. In many cases the erupted matter had stieamed away from the breaks in the surface ol who earth to a distance of from twenty to fifty feet. In other places there were lissures almost invaria bly extending from north to south. These cracks were not wide, and extendeJ downwards always, in a Blunting direction. The matter that was thrown up was of a dull, dark slaty color, jtid was mixed with gravel. There was also a little shale, and fu general the eiud re sembled that which is thrown from the bottom of the phosphate pits along the river. The water iu some places had the taste of our artesian water, but in many instances it was just as clear and limpid as from a mountain spring. CTJUIOUS JETS OF WATER. These evidences of the great con vulsiou are not sporadic ; they ex teud tar and near iu every direc tion from the city limits of Charles ton to Summerville, and at the lat ter place it was found, from trust worthy information, that the cracks and rissures were everywhere visi ble for miles ami miles around. Strangely enough, some of these were iu active operation, and the constant shocks that were felt at Sumiuerville sent the water out of these Assures to the height ol from fifteen to twenty feet. This was evidently the lesultof the cracks beiug filled with water and then the sides opening and closing by each succeeding shock. These appear ances were, of course, suggest ive of still more violent eiiiptinns, 'and there was a constant diead every where that there would be a general inundation caused by some extraor dinary force of the earthquake. Not only was the water emitted iu the low places where it might be expected to exist all the time, but on the tops of the highest elevations the mud could be seen. This latter fact indicated that the force was being exerted at rather more than the depth that was at first thought to be its limit. Near leu .Mile iiill a fatal accident occurred on Tues day night. The down Columbia train jumped the track. The en ginecr. Burns, and the fireman, Arnold, colored, were badly injured by the tremendous leap which the train took in (he dark under the unseen influence of the shock that dismantled the road. It is said the earth suddenly gave way, and that the engine first plunged down the temporary declivity. It was then raised on the top of the succeeding terrestrial undulation, and having reached the top of the wave a sud den swerving of the force to the right and left, hurled the ill fated traiu down the embankment. Some sialic words will undoubtedly stick and become arl ot the language; for instance, take that detestable word "dude," start ed by some newspaper man. It seems to be a fixture and has quite BuiHirseded the other slang word, "aiasher," that previously stood for the same thing. One-ol the latest slang terms is the word "Chestnut.'' The dictionary tells us tbat chest nut comes troui Kastaua, a city of rontuH, and its meaning la given as tbe root of a tree ot the genus casta net) ; second meaning, the tree itself, or its timber ; third meaning, a reddish brown color.
