From West Pascagoula to Fountaine- bleau the charcoal interests are being extensively engaged in. There is sel dom a time when the burning of pine wood into charcoal does not amply pay for the effort The innumerable kilns give a smoking evidence of their importance. Mr. LTD. Herrick returned Saturday night from Beaumont, where he had been for the past two weeks investing in oil lands. Mr. Herrick is enthusiastic over the prospects for a wonderful de velopment of that section of Texas. The Democrat-Star office was hon ored on Tuesday by a visit from Messrs. L. Lopes and Wm. K. Dukate, of Blloxi, nearly a half century good friends and patrons of the "Old Reliable." They were here at the request of those or our cltiaens who are organising a Beaumont oil company. These two gentlemen are the wealthiest cltiaens of the coast and thoroughly enterprising men, and everything they touch seems to turn to gold. The successful Jubilee mission excited renewed fervor among those of the Catholic faith in this community. The eloquence of the Reverend Fathers Nier- man and Polk was listened to, and made deep impression upon the minds of the faithful. The mission closed Sunday night last. Rev. Father W. Ten Brink, rector, assisted and is highly pleased with the Christian animation which was manifested throughout. Dates were fixed for regattas to be held at all the gulf water race courses represented in the aquatic fraternity with the exception of Pascagoula (Scran ton). Our thoroughbred yachtsman, Mr. Walter Gautler, whose ability to pin. nacle sails will doubtless be able to have regatta arranged for our Pascagoula bav the choicest of all the sheets of fluid surfaces to skim over with sportive enjoyment On Monday First Lieutenant J. C Hooker, of the revenue cutter Winona, telegraphed the Hon. Secretary of the Treasury from here of the finding of an abandoned IT. S. coast survey camp ton Petit Bols island, off Pascagoula, and its desertion by .the surveyors numbering three men. He is of the opinion that the surveying party had gone fishing a small boat and were caught in a squall, and were probably drowned. The camp equipage was left in charge of the keeper of the Pascagoula river light house. The Winona returned to Mobile Last Thursday night David Adams, a native Persian, born at Sangar, a short distance from the city of Oroomiah, lectured at the Lutheran church on the Religion, Manners and Customs of His Fatherland." The lecture was instruc tive and entertaining, and was listened to with eager attention on the part of those who were so fortunate as to have heard the lecture and to have been there.
