WE PREFER TO BUILD UP RATHER THAN TEAR DOWN. > VOL. XI. _]'(H’LAKVII.I.K MISS., THURSDAY. I'LliliUAUV -21,1901._NO. 22. Mr. Bullis Talks. I _ Something About Work That In ISelng Done On Hi* Komi. General Manager Bullis was in Jackson Tuesday and being inter viewed by the Clarion-Ledger re porter gave out some information which will be read with interest by the citizens of Hattiesburg. He said, “that the work of putting the roadbed in good condition be tween Jackson and Hattiesburg is progressing as nicely as could be expected under the circum stances. The bad weather during k t the past week has retarded work somewhat, but a large force of hands is engaged, and substan tial gravel ballast is being scat tered along the road at the rate of 150 cars per day. The Gulf and Ship Island road is gradually getting in better (shape in all departments, and considering the fact that the track was laid in mud between Sara toga and Jackson, tne company has been very fortunate in the matter of accidents. It is the ambition of the management to install a firt-class trunk line track fully as good as that of any sys tem operating in Mississippi and, although the work will require considerable time and a good-size expenditure of capital, it will fi nally be brought about. “The traveling public is highly pleased with the resumption of the double daily service on the road and the four trains are being well patronized. The freight trafic is also patronized well, con sidering the inclemency of the weather, and the shipments of lumber to northern points via this city are steadly increasing, as the mills along the line in crease their capacity and new mills are established. It is esti mated that the Gulf and Ship Is land road has brought between $8,000,000 and $9,000,000 worth of lumber to Jackson since the first of last September, a period of less than six months. This gives onlv a partial idea of the lumber industry along the road, as a great deal of lumber is ex ported from Gulfport. The Difference Between Bill and John. The following contrast between the Mississippi senator and the world’s ideal of prize fighters has been drawn by the Times-Herald, of Chicago: Senator Will Van Amberg Sul livan, of Mississippi, has slapped a voung woman’s face in W ash ington. Let’s sec. Does Mr. Sullivan claim to represent that good old Southern chivalry we used to hear so much about?— Times-Herald 8th inst. Mr. John J. Sullivan, when asked what he would do if Mrs. Nation came to smash his saloon, I replied: “I wouldn’t hit a lady. I don’t care what kind of a hat she had on. Dey may take me honest earnin’s from me, but no man can say dat I ever forgot my man hood, not for a minit. Dey may rob me outright, dey may dope me and knock me out wid clubs, but dey never can make me for git dat I’m a gentlemen; dat’s what your friend John L. says, and don’t get it wrong. All I want Mrs. Nation to do is to give me ten minutes warnin’ if che’s cornin’ to smash me place.” . Do you think that you could get tail your whisky stored in some ' warehouse by that lime?” he was j asked. “No, but I could drink t, ” the I old idol of the people answered I — Chicago Times-Herald, 9th i ins*.
