To Make t'i<> Farm a Success. One of the many siibje ts to which tin- Southern Farmers should give more attention and should more carefully consider than they have done in the past, is that of growing more meat for market and home use. Xo well directed place should ever want fora fat pig to slaughter as the occasion may demand any time through the year. l>y selecting some good strain ol hogs, the Po land China, for instance, and not man v of them, and giving them the pro] er care as they grow, a large percentage of all the pork and bacon needed on the farm can be easily produced, and a lug sav ing would thus be effected in the farmer’s earnings by the end of the year. A few hogs may be kept on a grass idot of one acre of land, and with a little tint-- and trouble they mav be kept clean and in a healthy growing condition. Swi te should be fed regularly and be constantly supplied with good water. Sited should be built to shield them from heat and cold. Cleanliness should al ways be given careful attent n. Feeding to get the best results out of the hog in pure, sweet meat, requires much care to see that the feeding is regularlvdone and not wastefully, but simply enough food supplied at each feeding to keep the pigs grow ing and in good flesh from start to finish. It is a good idea to have a barrel filled with water near the feeding pen, into which corn in the ear mav be put to soak and soften before it is fed. Cooked potatoes, of either sort, to which some corn meal may be added, will, when fed every other day, be very much relished by grow ing pigs. Such roots as turnips, and sweet potatoes will help {be cause, while not giving much fat. 'They will add to the grow th, and health of the hog. i ue lai iirtm ui i in’11 im siau s, if it is their intention to get out of the old ruts made in the past, will have to give more, time and attention than they have been doing to other crops than cotton, if they hope to succeed as farm ers. The increasing demand for heel, pork, poultry and eggs, il supplied to our home markets b\ the hard worked cotton growers of the tlulf states, would, in the course of the year, bring more ready cash into the family than all the cotton they could pos ably grow. To do this a larger area must he planted to corn, oats, al falfa, cabbage, potatoes of both sorts, turnips, and rutabagas for feeding hogs, cattle, poultry, hor ses and mules. Until such is the case and until all these things are done, progress will be very slow. —J. Cabot, in Southern Farmer.
