1 oniato Fertilizer—Corn Kditok (j \/.i: i ti- : Please tell me which is the best variety of corn for our light hill land with clay subsoil here in north Mississippi. Is Hi ckory King a small prolific corn " What is the best fertiliz er for tomatoes on light hill land with clav foundation and how it is best applied? I\‘. M. Ikuv, Como. Miss. Answer by Prof. C. '1'. Ames. i « ■ • • . . • eiississippi itony springs i\\ pcriment Station: Mosbv corn has done very much for the farmer in Missis sippi. but it is especially adapted to rich land. There is a variety grown in north Mississippi Known here as North Carolina corn, th.it is thought to be the best variety for uplands. Whether this is a local name or n<>t, 1 am unable to determine. This station has done nothing in this line, as it was not estab lished until last year and no work of this kind has been undertaken to date The ex periment Station at Agricultural College, Miss., is in position to answer any «jut?stion on Hickory King corn that you may ask. This variety. however, has given goon results at tn»s sta tion. As to fertilizer for tomatoes on light upland, an equal mixture of cotton seed meal and acid phosphate applied m the row be fore planting should give good results. The quantity to be used should be determined by the fertility of the land; the more fertile the larger the quan tity. From 2oo to mm pounds •? the above mixture per acre. Any commercial fertilizer whose principal ingredients are nitro gen and phosphoric acid would be good. Answer by Prof. K. K*. Lloyd. Agricultural College, Miss.: IIick«>ry King is a small eared corn with a small cob. It runs 'i liAnl t ti’A 0*1 m t/i t lin u t *i I L s n 11 shells out so per cent. The grains are short and wide, this, in iny opinion, being the great est objertion to it. Allowing the children to have a garden patch in which to raise something for their own profit will interest them in fanning, and cause them to work with pleasure. Oil meal has just about the same feeding value as bar ley or rye when fed to hogs When oil rake or meal is fed t« hogs the meat is soft and oily. The cake ran be got from any large grocery company. 11. W. Clark liroccry Co., St. Louis, Mo., sells it to feeders in this and other stales. This Will Not Appear Again.
