The question of matrimony, a nost perplexing one at times, to •very woman, admit! of many so lutions, and one of the latest has been achieved by an American widow, possessed of three charm ing daughters, beautiful in all re- j spects, but unfortunately not pos •eased of the finances to enhance those numerous oharms. The aforesaid widow, says the Mem phis Commercial Appeal, with marked intrepidity, decided to do a little speculation in the matri monial line; and her efforts so far have been crowned with suc cess. The widow and her daughters hied themselves to a small Kentish town which is noted as a health re sort and notorious for its “starva tion fare” boarding houses. Here one is compelled to pay exorbi tant rates for the simpler neces sities of life, and even then must receive third-rate fare. The widow believing in the saw that tUe earliest and quickest way to a man’s heart was through his stomach, set to work, leased one of the swellest houses in that vi cinity and wheedled the landlord into letting her keep boarders. His consent obtained, she engaged a French chef, hune out her sign and awaited results. Before many days she had out her S. R. O. sign, and at the end of two weeks’ time had to call in police aid to keep off would-be lodgers. Her fame had spread across two continents, her status had taken a <}eeided upwa rd climb, and, the greatest victory of all, one daughter is already dis posed of, and it is only a question of time before numbers two and three will follow. So much for American ingenuity and pluck. Speaking seriously, however, there should be a wealth of money in boarding houses and hotels if one has the business capacity for attending to work of this order. Right here in Memphis there is a crying need for boarding houses and the demand is increasing every day. Boarding houses of a better class and on a better scale than are now operated are needed, and there should be no hesitancy in supplying the demand. i lie average uoarumg uouse we all know. It lias been the subject of more columns in the comic pa pers than any other hard-worked joke, except the mother-in-law, perhaps. This holds the record; but the boardinghouse joke comes next. But to the man who has had experience, there is no humor about it at all. In fact, it is a matter not for levity, but for seri ous consideration. Prices are found, on investigation, to be ex tortionate; service poor, fare well nigh uneatable, and yet the cry goes up: “No money in keeping boarders!” SOMETHING LIKE A RIDE. Cyclist Has a Wonderful Experience —Narrow Escape from Death. The other day a man was relat ing a few of his wonderful per formances and remarkable es capes from death whilst cycling. He wras a good talker and held his ca n va Bits. “Pair,” said a small man in a corner, “but it ain’t up to my sam ple.” Then, clearing his throat, he commenced: “I was riding a brakeless bicycle down a steep hill in the north when the chain snapped, and in a few seconds I was spinning down the hill at about 60 miles an hour. Near the bottom of the hill the road turned at right angles, and an old thatched cottage stood directly in the way. While undecided wheth er to risk the sudden turn or the equally dangerous crash, a man came along the road with a plank which he leaned against the eaves of the cottage while he had a rest. Quick as thought I rode straight for the plank, and was soon career ing wildly up the straw-covered roof. The cottager and a few as sistants were at the back shaking carpets, and I and my machine, toppling over into their midst, were caught in the middle of the outstretched carpet,' and gently lowered to the ground.” Then there was silence while the company thought the matter over.
