TUPELO. MISS. JAN. 2. 1914
CHANCELLOR J. Q. ROBINS
On the 1st instant Chancellor
J. Q. Robins retired as the judge
of the First Chancery District of
Mississippi, which position he
has held for the past eight years.
Chancellor Robins was first
appointed by Governor Varda
man and subsequently appointed
by Governor Noel.
Few men have made the record
on the bench as Chancellor Rob
ins. In all of the matters com
ing before him he has meted out
even handed justice, and has
seen that the business of his
court was transacted with due
regard for the interests of all
parties. He had but few ap
peals from the decrees of his
court, and his judgments were
usually affirmed by the supreme
court. Possessed of a fine judi
cial mind, Judge Robins has
been a close student and has the
learning and ability to hold any
judicial position in the state.
The Chancellor comes very
closely in contact with the per
sonal affairs of many citizens,
and in all matters of probate
Chancellor Robins has seen that
the widow and orphans have re
ceived just and equitable treat
ment. No man in the district
stands closer to the people, and
his retirement from the bench is
the source of universal regret.
HOBBS ACQUITTED
The jury in the case of the
State vs. G. A. Hobbs in the
Warren county circuit court at
Vicksburg Wednesday morning
returned a verdict of not guilty.
Senator Hobbs was tried on an
indictment charging that he had
solicited and received a bribe
from Steve Castleman for his
support of a measure before the
Mississippi legislature to estab
lish a new county with Belzoni
as the county site.
President Wilson celebrated
his fifty-seventh birthday on
Sunday, the 28th of December.

“The Blindness of Virtue."
“The Blindness of Virtue," the
four act domestic drama of love
and life by Cosmo Hamilton, pre
sented by William Morris’ com
pany of English players from the
Little Theatre, London, will ap
pear at the Comus Theatre,
Wednesday, Jan. 7.
The story of the play is an in
dictment against the criminal
neglect of parents in bringing up
children in ignorance of certain
impulses. It has been drama
tized by Mr. Hamilton from a
novel of the same name at the
request of the Bishop of London,
and is declared to be a fearless
discusson of a theme which is
fairly crying for discussion, and
i yet is handled so delicately that
1 the most sensative are not of
tended.
The cast includes Gerald Hen
son, Henry Douglas, John May,
Helena Parsons, Marguerite Col
lier, Marie Ault, Loie Emery
and Beryl Henson.
The scenes of the play are laid
in and about a vicarage of a
small village near London, and
the production is unusually ar
tistic and complete.
“The Little Millionaire."
At the Comus theatre tonight,
Friday, Jan. 2, with Bert Leigh
and Hazele Burgess as its stars,
Geo. M. Cohan’s musical farce,
“The Little Millionaire,” will be
presented.
When it comes to building a
play with structural comedy ap
peal from foundation to turret,
re-inforced by a superstructure
of melodic charm, the archi
tectural palm is conceded to Geo.
M. Cohan, and “The Little Mil
lionaire” is by far the most en
joyable piece of work so far sub
mitted by this past-master in
musical comedy craftsmanship.
In “The Little Millionaire” he
is said to have again demon
strated his infallibility of gauging
the public pulse by furnishing
an entertainment that for whole
some, invigorating and laugh
compelling fuu ontclasses in
point of witty chatter and charm
of melodic composition any play
that has so far fallen fiom the
magic pen of this author of a
long line of successes.
