Graduation Exercises closed the 1913-1914 Session of the Water Valley Public School Tuesday evening. Last Sunday at the 11 o’clock hour, the Commencement Sermon was preached at the school audi torium by Dr. T. W. Jones, of Grenada, and we have yet to hear a sermon more appropriate to the occasion than that delivered by Dr. Jones. It carried with it, in every sentence, the beautiful com— bition of truth and beauty, while it abounded throughout with the most practical suggestions. It was a gem. It V7as both entertaining and instructive, and received the closest attention from everyone present during its delivery. Tuesday night the hour came when eleven boys and eight girls were to receive from the High School their Diplomas, and com mence life without the usual guid ing hand, and to master things that come their way in their own strength—be led, as it were, by their own judgment in the selec tion of the material with which to build character. It is an hour in their lives marked with the great eat gravity. The exercises were opened with an invocation by Rev. J. E. Hob son, followed by the class welcome song, “Ring the Lily Bells.” The salutatory address wasdeliv ed by Mr. Tom Greer. It was short, pointed and full of meat, and did credit to the youDg man, Here the large audience was regaled by Miss Laura Bell Harley with a splendid piano selection. I Then Rev. J. E. Hobson intro duced Hon. John R. Tally, of, Hittiesburg, who was to deliver the Commencement Address. No more interesting or instruc tive address was ever delivered be fore a graduating class in Water Valley. His subject was: “Pack ing Our Orip for a Journey of Life Through this World,” and when he got through packing the grip it was one of the best packed grips ever carried by anybody. He first placed common old everyday honesty in the grip as a foundation and then added truth and will power to it, and thus armored the young man or woman was ready for the journey. He urged mental and physical development, but said they were fruitless without that greater force, spiritual devel opment. The emphasis that every where attended his utterances riveted the attention of the de lighted hearers. It was one of the strongest and most practical talks to which we have ever had the pleasure of listening. Again the audience was treated to an excellent piona selection by Miss Fulmer. Miss Laura Belle Harley was Valedictorian, and with honor to her class and credit to herself she discharged this pleasant duty. The Diplomas were awarded by Hon. John R. Tally. ‘‘The Graduates Farewell Song” closed the evening’s exercises. This has, indeed, been a success ful term for the Water Valley Public School. The Superinten dent, C S. Bigham, and his able corps of tenders, have completed a a session’s workjthatcan be.pointed to with pride by every one inter ested in the school’s success.
