“The Only Person Germans Do Not Fear Is God ” “Christine” is the title of a collec tion of letters written home before the war by a young girl who while studying music in Germany, died in Stuttgart in August, 1914. The publication is edited by the —girl’s mother. The following shines like a searchlight over Kaiserland: We select the honest confession of Herr Kloster, master of the vio lin, made before his lips had been sealed by the bestowal of a glit tering imperial order, thus: “In no other country is there more than one king, In ours we find three and an emperor neces sary. The savage who fears all things does not fear more than we Germans. We fear other nations, we fear other people, we fear pub lic opinion to an extent incredible, and tremble before the opinion of our servants and tradespeople; we fear our own manners and there fore are obliged to preserve the idiotic practice of duelling, in which as often us not the man whose honor isbeing satisfied is the one who is killed; we fear all those .above us, of whom there are inva riably a great many; we fear all of ficials, and our country drips with officials. The only person we do not fear is God.” It is conscience that makes moral oowards of the Herman people Their fear of other nations is the natural dread of the just wrath of those they have wronged or would wrong. Their fear of publec opin ion is the result of a guilty cou scienoeness of their own actions --■'Their fear of their owu manners is a confession of evil aud their fear of their rulers is the fullanima) submission of a people too stolid t > strike a blow for their owu free dom.— Vicksburg Herald.
