Blondin’s Feat to be Outdone.— We have received a private letter from a gentleman residing at a small village on one of the inland lakes of Wisconsin, who informs ns that he has been for several months experimenting with what he calls “ water shoes,” with a view to perform safely and easily the passage of lakes and rivers on foot. The p"cnliar structure of these shoes, which has at last been perfected, after repeated trials and disappointments, renders pedestrianism on the surface of the water nearly as ca«y and even more rapid than on terra firrna. The experiments of the inventor have all been made after midnight, in private, on the calm surface of Lake, resulting often, as we are assured, in frequent involun tary baths, and two or three narrow escapes from drown ing. With the aid of a miniature pair of sails attached to his arms, and which can be “ reefed ” or spread in a moment, the inventor of this novel contrivance has crossed a lake three miles wide in half an hour, without as much as wetting his knees in the passage.— Chicago Sunday Leader. What They were Going to do with Him.— A few days since, a party of eighty North Carolinian emigrants en route for Oregon, passed through Danville, Missouri. While stopping to make some purchases, one of them was pounced upon by a lawyer of the town, who indulged largely in the not exclusively Yankee recreation of ask ing questions. The emigrant was quite communicative, and told him that they were going to found a town ; the pursuit of each person was already marked out, and there were no drones among them. What was this man to do ?He was to open a store. And that ? Start a black smith's shop. And the other standing behind him ? En gage in sheep raising. So they were nearly all inven torized, when a decrepid, white-haired octogenarian, an cestor of about, half the company, and looking venerable enough for old Time himself was observed sitting in one of the wagons. “ Why, who is that?” asked the eager questioner. “That’s my father.” “What is he going to do? He can't be of any use to your settlement.” “ O yes.” replied North Carolina, promptly, “we are taking the old man along to start a graveyard with.” The Avndkk Borealis Explained. — A scientific gen tleman in Illinois thus gives the origin of this celestial visitor: When the molofygistic temperature of the ho rizen is such as to calorioise the impurent indentation of the hemispheric analogy, the cohesion of the borax cur bust us becomes surcharged with infinitessimals ; which are thereby deprived of their fissural disquisitions. This effected, a rapid change is produced in the thorambump or of the gyascutos pulerium, which causes a convalcular in the hexagonal antipathies of tho terrestrium acqna veresli. The clouds then become a mass of deodorum ised specuhe of cennacular light, which can only be seen when it is visible. SPECIAL. NOTICES. Important to Strangers, and others requiring Medical Treatment. DR. YOUNG is the “Pioneer Advertising Physician ” in California, and the only one now advertising who has received a regular Medical education which is requisite for the successful treat ment of disease. Because of his unparalleled success, there have sprung, from time to time, into existence, imposters, without char acter or education, who, by boast ns, have managed to deceive the unwary sufferer into the belief that they were respectable and scien tific men. In so doing, they have scattered broadcast their nostrums among the honest and unsuspecting, to the destruction of health, and, in some cases, of life itself. Beware of them as you would the Upas tree, for they are is destructive. DR.
