FIGURES OF THE YEAR Great Increase in Membership and Consequent Mon etary Gain. fSpecial to “The Jersey City New*."] TRENTON, Feb. 26, Red Men. Df the modern type took possession of the city yesterday morning. About 600 of them are here to attend the annual convention of the Great Council of New Jersey, Improved Order of Red Men, and tbev represent 1S8 subordinate tribes, with a total membership of 22.62.1. All of the "big chiefs" trailed. Wed nesday, from their private tepees, and by using the paleface's method of traveling, •reached these hunting grounds Wednes day night. They composed tiie advance guard, and after inspecting the Y. M. C. A. bail, where the State tepee is located anj the pow-wow held, the chiefs com menced malting arrangements for the session. ' The .credential committee as sembled to receive speaking papers from each'delegate os he arrived. Most. "Of 'the dttle chiefs” and the past VaWtefiis arrived yesterday morning. It ds said that some chiefs carry toma hawks and scalping knives for alt rivals to their favorite candidates for the offices. This will result in a hotly con tested election. Friends of Great Chief of Records Daniel M. Stevens, of Cam den. predict that he will hare an easy victory. They point to his long and faith ini service a- a reason why he should be continued in the position. On the other baud those who are advancing the inter 's. ests of his competitior are forecasting de feat for Chief Stevens. Promptly at 10 o’clock the coined fire was kindled and Great Sachi-m Dr. W al ter S. Whitmore, of Oceanic, began to wield the tomahawk. After the “litttle dhiefs" and past sachoms got the great council degree the reports of the great chiefs were taken up for’consideration and action. That submitted by Great Sachem Whitmore covered seventy-three printed- pages. It was an exhaustive re view of his work, and. contained all the speaking papers (dScial circulars) issued by him during the great sun (one year) ending yesterday. In commeacing his report Chief Whit more referral In feeling terms to the death of “three of th^ pioneers, of oar great council—Past Great Incohonee Thomas J. Francis, of Camden; Past Great Sachem Charles H. Gordon, also of Camden, and Past Great Sachem Thomas McDonough, of Trenton.” Act ing upon the recommendation of the great sachems, the council reappointed a special committee of five te report a special order when tribute will be paid to the memory of the deceased chiefs. Xt is said that the memorial will he held this morning. During the great sun (one year) Chief 'Whitmore made many visits to the (tribes throughout the State. All of these visi tations are reported in detail, aud men tion is made of the condition in-which he found the tribes. Among the decisions made by him are the'following questions, which have an impofUnt bearing on all tribes:— T “Has a tribe any right to reopen its Charter/’ - Answer: “No.” “Can a paleface be accepted as an honorary member?” Answer: "No: it is inconsistent with thet-usages of the order admit any honorary or non-beneficial members.” “In case of the sac-hem and junior sag amore resigning, can the junior sagamore be elected to fill the sachem’s! stump?” Answer: “No; the junior must serve in ■the chair of the sonior sagamore before being eligible to the stump of sachem.” The sachem’s report concludes by quot ing from the reports submitted1 by the deputy great sachems, aud by thanking bis colleagues for supporting his^admin Istratian. Great Chief of Records Stevens'* pre V rented a statistical report, covering'(the •work done during 1903. In that time (seventeen district, sessions of the great' council were held, in as many different hunting grounds. These gatherings were held for the purpose of conference and r---‘“---— to give the great council degree to eligi ble past sachems. It was reported that li>2 members had received this degree, and that they represented ninety-seven tribes. A summary of Chief Stevens’s report shows these figures:—Members at last report, 21,061; adopted during 1903, 2,870; reinstated. 318; admitted by card, 114; total gain, 2,308. The losses were: Withdrawn by card, 55; suspended, 1.995; expelled, 8; died, 205: by surren der of charter, 49; by failing to report, 32; making the present membership 22, 625, a net increase for 1903 of 964. The number of tribes in this State on the first sun, cold moon, great sun of dis covery 413 (January, 1, 1904), was 183. There are in the reservation twenty three past great sachems and 3,649 past sachems. The financial figures of the subordinate tribes are as follows:—Amount of tribal receipts, $228,915.41; paid for relief of members, $65,004.85; paid for funeral benefits, $24,297.06; paid to widows and orphans, $848.41; paid for other pur poses, $113,001.38; total wealth of tribes, $416,677.33, representing a net increase of $38,737.12. Of this total worth $52, 951.79 is represented by wampum (money) in the treasuries of the tribes, and $363,725.54 is invested. Besides yesterday afternoon's sessions there will be sessions throughout today. Officers will be elected this afternoon.
