BBBYPBBABENBW IN PROGRESS Culminating Event of Asbury Park’s Carnival Takes - Plaoe Today. OREAT CROWD OF SPECTATORS *■ &*»■ ■ s !_ BEAUTIFUL PRIZES TO BE WON BY THE YOUNGSTERS SELECT ED BY THE JUDGES. (Special to "The Jersey City News.") ASBUBY PARK, Aug. 31, 1905.— This is tbs day for the annual baby par ade. The same general plans which have beau successfully carried out in past sea sons prevail again, except that a few im provements iu prizes, formation of the parade and in decorative features have ... gone into effect. Hundreds of decora tive exhibits with little children in at tendance are in line. The special committee in charge of this gear's event includes Hiram Walton and 7 J. J. Donnell. Claude E. Guerin will be grand niarahai, and Walter T. Hubbard, lieutenant marshal. Tlie assistant mar shals include Frank L. Tuttle. William Conger. Charles Kook. J. Otto Rhome. Bit - J. M. Coles. Edward M. Hope. Howard :t -..Shafer, J. S. Adrian, Ernest Mirns and X - .Harry DeBow Barnes. e * ■ v In all contests the decorations and sub ? jsct thanes and the costumes worn by these taking part are to be considered by ! the judges. The enly provision as to the j aga of children entered is that they must j be under 15 years old. They may be any j age under that. Babies have ocecasien aUy been shown only ten days old, but the bringing of very young infants into the show is not encouraged, for iu sev eral instances youngsters exhibited dur ing the second week after their birth have taken sick and died soon after the parade. A contestant eligible to the parade was elifsde to any division except the divi "jt a for twins and triplets, but the divi sion selected bad to be named on the en try book. When there was a pronounced disregard of divisional distinctions, how ever, or a failure to record the division selected on the entry blank, the grand marshal decided the division the contest ant should enter. To prevent late eemers from disorgan ising the work the judges were permitted to declare any contestant ineligible who was aot at the Auditorium, where the start was made, at half-past 2 o’clock, tttSefcf idJLAites before the starting time. ' The judges will award blue, red, yel low, lavender and white ribbons to the sneeeaaful coatee tarns, and the last color iMRlrss "me carnival committee cups. The first grand prize will be the sterling silver loving cup presented by the Burr Mclktssh Publishing Company of New York. This trephy will be awarded by the supreme judges, and the recipient ul not be eligible for any divisional prize. The 1996 parade will be the lar gest in the history of these baby pa geants, for already the number of young sters representing high water marks in the antries of former seasons have been left far behind by this year’s registra tions. The baby parade never fails to draw from T5,900 to lObfOO© spectators. An bnmense grandstand has been erected for about 6,000 of these in front of the Quean's court, which is located on the sedan aide of Ocean avenue, facing Sun set Lake. Ocean avenue ihas been roped off over its entire length vand carpeted ■o that the youngsters andAtheir attend ants may walk along the route free from the contaminating soil. The onlookers have arrayed themselves - in rows fifteen •nd twenty deep along the boardwalk, extending over the brickwalk ‘and perch ing upon seats beyoDd, whilelevery van tage point, such as the windows of near by hotel* and even the telegraph poles, are overflowed with a mass of humanity.
