Thursday, April 18, 1946 Belle Valley— Purple Riders Feted At Gala Banquet (Publisher’s Note—The news stories that follow 'were com piled and prepared by members of the Speech Class of the Belle Valley high school and released for publication through the of fice of School Superintendent J. H. Colley.) Belle Valley, April 17—The Pur ple Riders were guests of honor at the annual basketball banquet given by the ladies of the Methodist church, and held at the Belle Valley high school, Thursday evening, April 11. An interesting program was en joyed by approximately 100 friends and “fans”. The speaker of the evening was Ed. Sherman, athletic director from Muskingum college, New Concord. Mr Sherman gave an interesting and an inspiring talk concerning basketball and it’s part in the school curriculum. County Superintendent H. C. Se crest gave challenging remarks con cerning the relationship of basket ball to the game of life. were pro- Outstanding awards cured, which consisted of purple wool coat sweaters, letters and min iature silver basketballs. These awards were presented by Coach J. H. Colley to the following varsity members: Bill Starr, Steve Thomas, co-captains of this year’s team fed Johnson, Victor Sklenar, Billy Bar lock, Eddie Mishlan, Ralph Har baugh, and Manager Robert Sluga. Cheerleaders who received letters were Mona Bond, Mary Peck, Betty Halahan, and Mddred Velosky. Halahan, C--- will be Eddie, Mishlan and Harbaugh. Co-captains for next year s earn ko Eddie Mishlan and Ralph Mr Colley expressed his appre ciation to the ardent fans of the county champs who cheered the team to victory. Rev. J. B. McGee acted as toast master for the occasion. Junior Class To Present Comedy “The Woman Next Door is the title of the three act comedy drama that the junior class of the Belle Valley high school have chosen produce Friday evening, April -6, at 8:00 o’clock in the high school auditorium. The story concerns two good friends and neighbors, widows with grown families, who, after years of almost sisterly devotion to one an other, suddenly become sworn en emies and set out to “get even with each other in the most amazing and laughable ways. To complicate mat ters, one widow’s son wants to mar ry the other widow’s daughter. This brings about some very amusing situations, and some very serious ones. Tickets may be procured from members of the junior class or pur chased at the door on the night oi the performance. The play is being directed y Rama Groves, instructor in the high school. Junior-Senior Banquet Planned The annual junior-senior banquet will be held at the Cambridge Coun try club on Wednesday evening, May 8. This social event is spon sored by the junior class and ar rangements are made by the class supervisor, W. C. Reed. Students Qualify For Tests ______ high Several students of the sch^r* took “the preliminary Ohio State scholarship tests Friday, Apri 12. The winners will be announces in the later edition. Last Course For Lyceum Scheduled The last night of the Jeffrey s high school lyceum course featuring professional talent from Capitol col lege Columbus, will be held Thurs day, April 18, at 8:00 o’clock at the auditorium. This entertainment will be a variety program instead of the lecture as previously scheduled. Admission prices are 25c and 0c. Republican Voters Nominate Carr Davis For Commissioner. Renrock Renrock, April 17—The Women’s Society of Christian Service will meet at the home of Mrs. Leura Dickinson Thursday of this week for an all day meeting. Pot luck dinner at the noon hour. The ladies who attended the W. S. C. S. district meeting held in McConnelsville at the Trinity Metho dist church Wednesday of last week were: Felicia Thorla, Alice Coyle, Leura Dickinson, Louise Hall, Iva Kuntz and Floy Tilden. Renrock grange will hold their regular meeting Friday evening, April 19. Mr. and Mrs. Charley Hamilton who have sold their farm, are ex pecting to move to Dexter City in the near future where they have pur chased property. Summerfield of the Summerfield, April 17—Members of the Sunshine Sunday school class of the Methodist church held their monthly meeting Tuesday evening at the church, featured with a pot luck dinner. Dinner Guests Miss Connie Reed and George Reed and Doris Kraft of Caldwell were dinner guests Wednesday even ing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Amos. Brief Mention Mrs. Lillie Curtis, Leota Curtis, Luna Fowler, Allie Archer were in Zanesville on business, Friday. Mrs. Minnie Batten of Newark was a dinner guest of her son, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Batten, Sunday. Mr and Mrs. Harry Weaver, Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Atkinson attended a stock sale at London last week. Rev. and Mrs. W. E. Peters, Mrs. Friend Wilson and Mrs. Emma Mc Gurk attended a W. S. C. S. dis trict meeting held Tuesday at Mc Connelsville. L. A. Wheatley, teacher in the Cuyahoga Falls school spent the weekend with his family here. The Alpha and Omega Sunday school class of the Methodist church held their regular meeting Tuesday evening at the church. Following the business meeting, a pot luck dinner was served. The old lecturers of the Summer field grange took the April Fool idea seriously Saturday evening and used it most effectively for their regular meeting. After “fooling” the aud ience for a while, they put on the regular program. Sharon Sharon, April 17—Mrs. Marjorie Springer, teacher in the Forest Grove school accompanied sixteen pupils from Sharon and Forest Grove schools to Columbus for a tour of that city, Saturday. Gene Wiley of the U. S. N. is confined to a hospital in Philadel phia, Pa., convalescing from an at tack of pneumonia. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Trimble of near Bevrly were visiting with her sister, Mrs. T. L. Marquis and family, Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. John Bolog and chil dren of Zanesville spent the week end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jennings. Mr. and Mrs. Daryl Buckey and three children of Caldwell visited with Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Marquis, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gouldsberry were honored with a miscellaneous shower, Tuesday evening, at the home of Mrs. Gouldberry’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Cisler. They received a large number of nice gifts. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Harmon were visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Cash Marquis at Canton last week. Mrs. Jane Archer is visiting with her daughter, Clarice, in Columbus. The pupils of Sharon school en joyed a party and potato sprouting in the Presbyterian church basement, Tuesday evening. Mrs. Floy Parrish was chaperone. Frank Archibald, who is employed in Canton, spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Archibald. Marcella Wheeler of Caldwell vis ited last week with her aunt, Mrs. Pauline Haga and family. Mr. and Mrs. Raleigh Lowe of near Reinersville were calling on Miss Loutitia Lowe and Walter Lowe last week. Mrs. Ella McDonald visited recent ly with her daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Harper and family near South Olive. Cale, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pearl Cale of Duncan Falls, who is serv ing with the naval supply center on Guam, was recently promoted from S2/c to Sl/c. Dallas attended local high school, later graduating from Philo high school, class of 1945. He has been overseas since Nov. 21. Friends will remember him as a fine athlete. Basketball Banquet Cumberland’s annual basketball banquet will be held in the Presby terian church Friday evening, April 26, to be served by the ladies of the church. Tickets will be sold by high school students and it is necessary for reservations to be in by April 23. Regular Meeting The regular meeting of the W. S. C. S. will meet in the social rooms May 6 at 8:00 o’clock. Committee consists of Hazel Scott, Helen Scott, I innie Dudley, Della Stottsberry, and Eleanore Bell. Willing Workers To Meet The Willing Workers class of Methodist church will be entertained at the home of Mrs. Francis Bar nett, Friday evening, April 19. Com panion hostesses are: Clara Stur gill, Fleanore Bell, Mary Alice Smith, Elnora Langford, and Vera Klineknecht. The affair promises to be most enjoyable. Whetstone Recuperating Glen Whetstone, former agricul tural teacher in Cumberland and Belle Valley high schools, is re cuperating from a recent operation in Mi’lersburg, Ohio, hospital. The Whetstone family resides at nearby Nashville. Sunrise Service An impressive sunrise service is being planned for Easter morning in Methodist church at 6:00 o’clock. The program will be conducted by members of Youth Fellowship. All are cordially invited to attend. Buys Property Mrs. Ethel Covert has purchased property in Maple Heights, near Caldwell, and is locating there. Men’s Union Brotherhood The recent service held in Presby terian church by the Men’s Union Brotherhood proved of unusual in terest. Judge S. C. Carnes of Cam bridge was the speaker and plans to reorganize the brotherhood followed. Future services will alternate be tween the Methodist and Presby terian churches. Officers were elected as follows: president, Hallie Burns vice presi dent, E. H. Bartlett and secretary treasurer, Roy F. Dudley. Braun, who is on ter minal leave, held services Sunday night at the Methodist church and will be here in two weeks, April 28 at 7:30 p. m. Carl Davis underwent surgery at Memorial hospital in Marietta, Mon day morning. Mr. Davis has been school janitor for a number of years. Mrs. Louise Webber and Mrs. Lawrence Webber and children of Navarre spent last week with Mrs. Elmira Webber and other relatives and friends.. MSVAY SCHILLING CALDWELL MEMORIAL OF THE MAHONING COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION TO THE LATE WILLIAM F. HESSON Attorney William F. Hesson de parted this life on January 29th, 1946, at the Mercy Hospital at Can ton, Ohio, as the result of a cere bral hemorrhage, which occurred but a few days prior to his death. He was 55 years of age, having been born at Caldwell, Ohio. His early education was obtained in the public schools of Ohio, but he was a studious individual and took .up the profession of teaching and for several years was a teacher in the High School at Hannibal, Ohio. Sub sequently, he accepted the Principal ship of the Canfield High School and after holding this position for a period of time he became a teacher in what was known in former years as Short and Williams’ Business College in Youngstown, Ohio. At the same time, he was studying Law, and on the 25th of June, 1924 was admitted to the Ohio Bar. In the spring of 1925 he became as sociated with Butler DeCamp and this relationship continued for a period of nineteen years. On May 23, 1929, Mr. Hesson was admitted to practice in the Federal District Court. About two years ago, he withdrew from the private practice of Law and obtained a position in the Wage and Hour Department of the Department of Ijabor with the United States Government and was so engaged at the time of his death. Those who knew Mr. Hesson well, inform us that he wag a studious, well read and skillful lawyers. He was a gentleman who was respected for his legal ability by those with whom he came in contact in the practice of his profession. Funeral services were conducted for Mr. Hesson on January 31st, 1946 at Caldwell, Ohio. He ig sur vived by his mother, Mrs. Mollie Rucker of Caldwell, Ohio, and two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Tidermann of Toledo, Ohio, and Mrs. Eleanor Haz ard of Columbus, Ohio.
