Thursday, August 15, 1946 Harriettsville— 4-H’ers Plan Gala Event For Friday Evening Harriettsville, Aug. 14—The an nual Father-Son day of St. Hen ry’s church, will be celebrated Sunday, August 25 at Palace hall. A chicken dinner and all the trim mings will be served by the ladies of the parish from 11 to 1 o’clock. Usual amusements in the after noon and will close with a dance in the evening. Rev. Nichel and the parishioners of St. Henry’s church extend a cordial invitation to the general public to attend. Elk’s 4-H‘ers Entertain There will be an evening of en tertainment at the local high school Friday evening, August 16, sponsored by the Elks Busy Bee 4-H, Elks Green Clover 4-H, and the Boys 4-H Swimmers club. A cake walk, grab bag, and many other amusements will be on hand for the enjoyment of all present. Refreshments will be served. The public is invited to attend. Mrs. Haidet Entertains Mrs. Mary Haidet entertained with a dinner Wednesday evening. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Heed, Mrs. Mae Griffith and Mrs. H. B. Wetzler of Byes ville. Returns Home Mrs. Waldine Hendershot, local telephone operator, has returned home Sunday after a week’s visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Payne, of Marietta route, where she was taken from Mari etta Memorial hospital, following major surgery. Mrs. Hendershot is very thankful to those who re membered her with cards, flowers and books. Chicken Dinner Served Mrs. George Payne, of Marietta route, entertained with a course chicken dinner Saturday evening, Aug. 10, honoring the birthday an niversary of her husband. Those present were Mrs. Waldine Hen dershot and sons, Roger and No lan, of Harriettsville, Mrs. Eloise Poole of Long Beach, Calif., Mary Lou, Dollie, and Billie Payne. Personals Mr. and Mrs. John Schehl of Berne were dinner guests Thurs day evening at St. Henry’s rectory. Rev. A. G. Nickel was in Phil adelphia, Pa., the past week, in the interest of his health. Recently Rev. Nickel underwent major sur gery, and his health has improved satisfactorily. C. D. Miller, Carlos Miller, Mrs. Beryl Vanfossen, Freda Cantwell and Barbara Baker were Caldwell shoppers Saturday. Shirley Mae Hendershot re turned home Sunday from a month’s vacation with her grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Hen dershot, and other relatives at Dalzell. Miss Martha Ullman visited re cently with Mr. and Mrs. Philip Schenk of Marietta. Dora Jane, Mary Elizabeth and Millie Mallett, of Canton, are visit ing their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. G. E. McVay. Miss Mary Lou Payne and Mrs. Eloise Poole of Marietta route are visiting their sister, Mrs. Waldine Hendershot, and family. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Baker vis ited relatives at Kent, Friday and Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Vanfossen of Akron spent the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wade Vanfossen, and attended the Thompson reunion held at the Reed Thompson home on Caldwell route. Miss Mary Stevens of Marietta visited from Friday until Sunday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Er val Stevens. Mr. and Mrs. Guy Blair of Staf ford and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Wil son and children, Mary and Gary, visited Sunday with Miss Hattie Hardesty, of route 1. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Blair of Alliance visited last week with Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Blair. Sunday visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Walker were: Mr. and Mrs. Howard Morrison and family of Caldwell route, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Vanfossen and family, Maywood Love and son, Roger, of route 1, and Miss Mabel and Earl Walker, of Canton. J. H. Shafer and son, Harold, visited Mrs. Shafer, Sunday, who is a patient at University hospital, Columbus. Mrs. Dorothy Book and daugh ter, Ellen, are visiting relatives at Canton and Alliance. Barbara Baker spent the week end with Freda Cantwell. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Vanfossen and Freda Cantwell visited Sun day with Mr. and Mrs. Gaylord Miller of Spiedel. Mrs. Clarence Mantel and daughters, Mary and Martha, were shoppers in Marietta, Tuesday. Mrs. Ethel Ball and daughter, Shirley, of Stafford, were business visitors in town Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Forest Lee of Par kersburg, W. Va., and Francis Lee of Belleville, W. Va., were callers at the home of Bessie Miller and sisters, Saturday, and also called on other relatives here. Miss June Lee of Lower Salem spent Sunday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Lee. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Johanning, Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Schramm and son, Daniel, visited the former’s sister, Mrs. Emma Barnes, of Mal aga, Sunday. Mrs. Barnes is slow ly recovering from a serious oper ation. W. E. David Ayers returned home Sunday from a week’s tour of In diana, Illinois, Iowa, and Kansas. Miss Clara Patterson attended grange at Carlisle, Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Bonar spent Sunday evening with Mr. and Mrs. Erval Stevens. Miss Beulah Beryl Baker of Ra venna spent the weekend with her mother, Mrs. Anna Baker. Vernon Baker left Saturday for Columbus where he expects find employment. Miss Esther Walker visited the past week with relatives and friends at Canton. Kennonsbnrg Kennonsburg, August 14 Miss Gretchen Danford, Columbus, and Mrs. Willis Hupp, Caldwell, spent a day recently with Mr. and Mrs. Ures Massie. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Bob Sells of Canton a 9 lb. son. The mother was Wilma Lashley before her marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Long and daughter, Melba, visited with rela tives at Delawere Sunday and Monday. They took Melba on to Columbus Monday where she is going to take a beautician course. Harmon Moore returned home Friday after a three week’s stay with his son, Derwin, of near Un iontown, Ohio. While there he vis ited with his daughter, Mrs. Vera Hague and son, Harold Moore and families. We have word stating Blanche Wells of near Barnesville passed away Sunday morning. She bad been in the Barnesville hospital for six weeks. Mrs. Beryl and Mrs. Bernard Moore were in town a day last week. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Thomp son and family spent Sunday with Mrs. Ures Marrie. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hart and Mrs. Emma Hart spent the week end here. D. G. McVicker and H. L. Moore were at Barnesville Saturday on business. Myron Wilson was released from the Navy Monday of last week. He is going to start to school some time in the near future. He is going to take advanced chemistry. Several young children around here have the whooping cough. Harmon Moore took dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Russell Magis Sun day. Ures Massie went to Red Boil ing Springs, Tenn., last week. He is going to take a course of treat ments. Loren Eagon, Sylvan Law and Paul Mallett were in town Monday night. Russell Magis and Dave McVick er were at Barnesville Monday. Mrs. Hazel Williams and Josie Williams and daughter, Daisy, were shopping at Quaker, Monday. Salesville Salesville, August 14—The reg ular monthly meeting of the W. S. C. S. was held at the Methodist church Thursday evening, August 1st, with twelve members present. The business meeting was con ducted by the president, Mrs. Mil dred St. Clair, and the devotional meeting was led by Mrs. Wilbur Frame. The program leader be ing absent, no program was ren dered. The next meeting will be held at the Henry Kehl home on Thursday, Sept. 5th. Mrs. S. M. Frakes of near Ken nonsburg visited Thursday after noon at the home of Hazel Linn. Bobby Dyer, David Reynolds and Carlton Stillion left Sunday for Scout Camp at Camp Agaming, Elm Grove, W. Va. Carl Mendenhall of London is spending this month at his home here. Mr. and Mrs. Forest Thomas re turned to their home Sunday after a six week’s visit with their daughter, Elaine, Brooklyn, New York. Mrs. Pauline (Roe) Lashley and small son of Buffalo are visiting this week at the home of her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. John Roe. Miss Sissy Chester returned to her home after visiting with rela tives in Cleveland. Margaret Barrett of Cambridge spent Thursday with her family here. Mr. and Mrs. Uuric Stillion were Cambridge visitors Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Long and daughter of Cambridge have been visiting Mrs. Ella Long the past week. Mrs. E. R. Bair, daughter, Patty, and Louie Rice of Freeport visited Tuesday evening with Mr. and Mrs Neill Dollison and other local rel atives. Mrs. Joseph Yanosik has been released from St. Francis hospital, Cambridge, where she had been a patient for several days. I Summerfield Summerfield, Aug. 14 Mrs. Nellie Cunningham, who fell down the si-’ps of the Methodist church, Tuesday evening, following the W. S.C.S. meeting, is recovering at her home here from injuries received, which included a fractured arm and lacerations. Mr. and Mrs. Ira Denbow visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alva Wharton and the former’s mother at Woodsfield, who has been ser iously ill. Mrs. Alva Shackles, Cambridge, visited Thursday with Mrs. Ira Bates and other friends, Thursday. Billie Stanfill left this week with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. West, for a visit at their home near Chicago, Ill. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Wharton, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Gene Whar ton were in Caldwell on business, Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Kelly Hughes and children spent the past week visit ing at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alva Wharton. Mrs. Blanche Carpenter, Barnes ville, and her daughter, Opal Brown visited Thursday with Mrs. Orpha Bishop. Rev. Tschappat delivered a very interesting sermon Sunday morn ing. Special music was also given by the choir. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon West and sons spent a few days vacation with the former’s mother at Wash ington Court House recently. Mrs. Edna Nuchols, Columbus, and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Trees, Cleveland, are visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Havenor this week. Miss Connie Reed visited the weekend with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Warner, South Olive. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bode and Ida Hartshorn visited the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Leo Kullman, Columbus. They were accompanied home by Mrs. Pauline Creamer and daughters, who are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bode. Mrs. Ellen Burbacher, of Cleve land, is visiting at the home of her sons here. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Bode visited Sunday at the home of his sister, Mr. and Mrs. John Holschuch, Stafford. Mr. and Mrs. Chester Sullivan, Columbus, Mr. and Mrs. George Craig visited the weekend at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Pryor. The birthday anniversary of Mary Catherine Mallett was observed Sunday with a birthday dinner at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Homer Mallett. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Horton, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Nelson, Columbus, visited the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Capell Horton. Leatha Havenor and Carol Craig, Columbus, visited the weekend at the home of their parents here. Mr. and Mrs. George Philpot spent the weekend in Newark vis iting relatives. Mrs. Vernon Havenor was in Caldwell on business, Monday. Mrs. Verda Draper, Canton, spent the weekend with her sister, Mrs. H. C. Gibson. The Masons are busy this week doing some repair work on their new Temple, .the former Cleveland hotel Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Martin and children visited her mother, Mrs. Bertha Reed Swazey, Sunday. Mrs. E. E. Horton and daughter, Yvonne, Canton, visited friends and relatives here the weekend. R. B. Morris and grand daugh ter, Sandra Cline, of Cincinnati, were guests Monday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Horton. The Summerfield grange will hold their regular meeting Satur day evening with a special pro gram. Every Grange family will take part. Clarence Pryor will move in the near future to his newly remodeled home. Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Horton visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Horton, Berne, Sunday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Michael Sarisky, Jr., of New ton D. Baker Veterans hospital, W. C. John McElfresh of Zanesville has purchased the house formerly oc cupied by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wilkins. The house was owned by Mrs. Sophia Malisa. Mr. McElfresh and Clyta Dusenberry of Zanesville have established their residence there and had as guests Sunday, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Dusenberry and daughter, Phyllis Ann, and Grace Kirk, all of Zanesville, and Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Wilkinson and daugh ters, of this place. Visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Wilkinson last week were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lallathin of Cambridge. Jeanette Bober of Canton visited her mother, Mrs. Anna Bober, last weekend. Keithtown Keithtown, Aug. 14—Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Hale are spending a few days with the latter’s son, Wiley Swank, and family of Rockford, Illinois. Mae Heddleson of Caldwell and Mrs. Edith Chandler spent a few days the past week with relatives in Columbus. Nancy Crowe of Akron has re turned to her home after spending several days at the home of Ard Chandler and family. Eddie Chandler of Kent and Bev erly Swank of Columbus visited over the weekend with relatives in this vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. Jonas Stack spent Sunday at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Chandler. Mrs. Dannie Wise of Warren spent last week at the home of her parents Mr .and Mrs. Hal Farson. Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Leicher of Cleveland are viisting at the home of the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hal Farson. Fred Chandler returned home Sunday after spending a week with relatives at Kent. Willscreek Willscreek, August 14 Harvest ing most all done and most of the threshing. Oats and wheat was the best for years. Our old friend Gilbert Long was greeting friends on the creek last week. Several of our folks attended the fair at Woodsfield last week. Evelyn Carpenter and Mary Leach made a business trip to Cambridge and Byesville last week. Irvin Stallings will soon start to school at Athens. Almeda Baker is very poorly. She has been in the hospital at Cambridge for quite a while but was brought home last Thursday. Blaine Day lost a valuable calf one day last week. Otto Carpenter took a load of cattle to Barnesville last Saturday. Bill Wyscarver bought Blaine Day’s and G. P. Moore’s lambs last Saturday and took them to the Barnesville sales. Fishers say the fish are beginning to bite again. They have been on a vacation for the past three or four weeks. John Gibson has bought the old Renner school house of Earl Moore and will move it off soon. Protracted meeting is in progress at Batesville, G. H. Gallagher is the minister. John Bates is getting better. He is now able to drive his car. Denver Moore is still visiting in Boston, Mass. Junior Smith was a caller at George McKee’s last Saturday. Robert Wyscarver has bought a new Chevorlet truck and is ready to deliver coal for his neighbors. Robert McVicker is working for a contractor at Newark.
