Most people desire to have favor with God and think that no matter how they live they will finally be acceptable to Him. They presume upon His love. Many of these same people be lieve that if they join a church and faithfully perform the rituals of that church, regardless of every day living, that all is right between their soul and God. Jesus exposed the hypocrisy of the Pharisees of His day, saying, "Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cum min, and have omitted the weigh tier matters of the law, judg ment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone." (Matthew 23:23). James was led to write, "What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and tilled notwithstand ing ye give them not those things which are needful to the body what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone." (James 2:14 17). In James 1, verse 27 we read, "Pure religion and undefiled be fore God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and wid ows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world." So we see that true religion is practical it will reveal itself in cur every day affairs and in all our dealings with our fellowmen. In the words of our text, we see that it is summed up in the words "mercy and truth." "Mercy" is compassion or pity shown to those who are suffer ing, in peril, or are in need. In the full sense of the word it is extended to the undeserving as well as to those who are our friends, (remember that God "halth not dealt with us after our sins nor rewarded us ac cording to our iniquities.") "Truth" is conformity to fact or reality. It means faithfulness in speech and conduct speaking right and acting rightL Neither of these virtues are characteristic of the natural man. 11 we follow our natural desires, we look out for ourselves and lQt the other fellow beware. right and speak the truth oriiy when it serves our purpose. Strictly speaking, "mercy" and "truth" can only be exercised habitually by those who are eon trolled by God the Holy Spirit, by those who "walk in the spirit." (See Galatians 5:17-23). So we have the exhortation in Proverbs 3:5, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understand ing." In the language of the New Testament this means that we ore to surrender our will to God and acknowledge Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour (John 3:16, 36: Romans 10:9, 10) Having done this we are given the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13 Romant: 8:9). The result favor with God and man. —Hoy E. Wikander Buffalo Free Methodist Robert Bowen, Pastor Sunday school, 2:00 p. m. Worship service, 3:00 p. m. It just seems but yesterday God blessed our home with a darling little girl. 13 years ago she left us all sad with heavy hearts, our home is not the same. All we have are memories and her picture in a frame. We all loved her, yes, we loved, her but God loved her even more. God in his wisdom did plan, beyond our power to see. She has gone to live with Jesus, has gone from a world of care. From an earthly home to a mansion fair, from a sinful world' to joys untold. Yes, some day we'll be together on a fairer and brighter shore. Our circle will be united to be broken nevermore. Mother, Daddy and Children.
