I Thessalonians 2:13 e time to time we hear of those Who say that the New Testament (and the Old Testa ment) is not to be taken serious ly. They say that it is just a col lection of books written by just ordinary men about 2000 years ago. Therefore we should not use 'it as a basis for our faith, nor should we use it to deter mine how we should live. They would have us believe that men have changed and that the "thinkers" of today have more advanced ideas on how to live. Yet our daily newspapers and the reports of our national leaders constantly tell us of the crime, immorality and loose ness of living that exists within Look what Maytag gives you Years of faithful 'afiPT £3& Uf Thu Maytag Commander— urtre ponvlaili ub. Whenever a reference is made to the Scriptures (the Old Tes tament, it is stated that the Old Testament is the Word of God and was given by inspiration (II Timothy 3:16, 17 I Petef 1:10 -12 II Peter 1:20, 21 Hebrews 3:7, Acts 1:16). Jesus, Himself, acknowledged the authority of the Old Testament Luke 4:4, 8, 12 24:27 John 7:42. We also find that the writers of the New Testament claimed that they did not teach or write their own thoughts. They stated that they were guided or influ enced by the Holy Spirit (I Cor inthians 2:1-13 I Thessalonians 2:13 Revelation 22:19). Jesus told His disciples that they would be instructed by the Holy Spirit (John 16:12-15) and that they would not be able to perform their mission until they were empowered by the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). John Wesley said, concerning the Devine inspiration of the Holy Scriptures (Old and New Testaments), "The Bible must be the invention of good men or angels, bad men or devils, or of God. (1). It could not be the invention of good men or angels, for they neither would nor could make a book and tell lies all the time writing it, saying, Thus saith the Lord,' when it was their own invention. (2). It could not be the invention of bad men or devils, for they could not make a book which commands all duty, forbids all sins and condemns their own souls to hell for eternity. (3). Therefore I draw the conclusion that the Bible must Ik- iveii by Divine inspiration So we conclude that, since the New Testament is the Word of God given through godly men, we should accept it and follow it for our faith and everyday living. What God has said concerning the reader of "The Revelation" is equally true in reading any other book of the New Testa ment or Old Testament. He said, in chapter1 one, verse three, "Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which arc written therein." Roy E. RANDOLPH Question: Does the Bible say that to be joined in marriage by God, it must be done by a clergyman or in the church, or is a marriage ceremony by a Jus tice of the Peace or the mayor recorded in heaven or by God? Answer: God's law is given for the benefit and welfare of man kind. The seventh commandment of the decalogue says definitely, "Thou shalt not commit adult ery," and the laws of marriage and divorce are given for the good of mankind and to help them be free from adultery. But like all the other laws of God, man takes iij his hands his ways and does as he pleases ffgard less of the law of God. Marriage was instituted in the Garden of Eden, and it seems the only ceremony was the giv ing of Eve to Adam 6y God, and such seemed the case among the early patriarchs. In fhe days of Jesus much ceremony was con nected with weddings, and we see how it is today. Paul says'in Hebrews 13:4, "Marriage is honorable in all." In Leviticus 18 we read of laws which govern marriage, but no where do I know that the word of God speaks of the person who is to perform the wedding cere mony. Some churches have decreed that unless a marriage is performed under their jurisdic tion it is not legal, but that is the church governnjent and not the word of God. The thing to remember is that marriage is a sacred institution. That it is ordained of God .It is His plan not man's .And since it is His plan, man should faith fully and willingly obey the laws of God concerning it. Marriages entered into under the jurisdic tion of the state are lawful and legal as far as the state is con cerned, but many of them are not legal as far as God is con cerned, because they go con trary to God's ldws concerning marriage. As far as a marfiage being re corded of God. we must remem ber that God knows everything that we do and even think, and when a marriage is performed He knows whether it is accord ing to His law or not. If the marriage is not according to the law of God the parties are liv ing. in adultery, and the sooner ftiey separate and live apart the quicker they will be free from their sin. Sin is a terrible thing, and the Devil tries to get people to do things that they should not do and then tells them that they cannot get out of it,. and they believe the dpvil instead of God, and go on living in sin. It seems that it is not so much who performs the marriage cere mony, as it is whether the par ties to the marriage have a right before God to marry, and once married they are married. Divorce is too easy and sin is too rampant today. We need God in our hearts, and all will well. The Lord bless you.
