The people of his day were so eager to acquire wealth and "the comforts of life" that they were willing to turn their backs on that which had made their nation great—the worship of and obedience to the true, living, almighty God. They did not hesitate to take unfair advantage of one another. Verses 4-6 of Amos 8, tell us that those who had what the people needed sought to sell as little as they could for as much as they could. They practiced deceit, falsifying the balances pretending to give the purchas ers what they asked for, but giving that which was inferior. The poor they made poorer, re ducing them to bondage or slavery. We also observe that they went through the form and1 cere monies of religious worship, but their hearts were not in it. In fact, they were glad when it was all over with so that they could again go back to their business of making money. They were .ovetous, and covetousness causes men to rebell against God and to hurt (even kill) their fellowmen. Our text, verse 11, tells us that God will npt tolerate such behaviour. When men ignore God and dishonor Him, He, in right eousness an£ justice, must judge them. He does not always do that by death, sickness, physical affliction and material want. He does not always send "a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water." We see that here He can send famine "of hearing the words of the Lord." To many that may seem no judgment. In fact, they would be glad if preachers would stop preaching, if they *mld listen to the radio or TV without hear ing "religion" if loved ones would ..top talking "about the Lord." But we read in Proverbs 29:18: Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keep eth the law, happy is he." As it used here, "vision" means "a revelation from God," or "the teaching or (preaching of the INSURANCE Word of God." "Where there is no vision, the people perish." "Perish" has the meaning of "exposing, make naked," "cast off restraint, be come disorderly rebelling against God, against govern ment, becoming factious, becom ing as sheep without a shep herd finally they waste away, being useless, unproductive. "Lust, crime, and the general corruption of morals follow upon a rejection of the vision of God.' "God, Who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these lasit days spoken unto us by His Son" (Hebrews 1:1, 2). Let us heed His teachings and acknowledge Him as our Lord (John 14:1, 6 Acts 4:12 Romans 10:9, 10), re membering that "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people" (Pro verbs 14:34), and "Happy is that people, whose God is the Lord (Psalm 144:14).
