December Mr. and Mrs. Six Hare Weeks Of Winter For County Noble countians are going to have six more weeks of winter, if they can stand it. Long a source of hope in a dreary season to a winter-weary population, Noble countians were given a set-back Monday when the groundhog saw his shadow and returned to a period of hibernation for another six weeks. Groundhog Day has been a time for forecasting weather since pioneer times. Originally the weather forecasting was done on Candlemas Day wfhich also falls on February 2. Part of an ancient religious ceremony, Europeans based their hopes for the coming of spring and even a good planting season on the weather of this day. Good weather that day meant bad weather in the days ahead and the reverse was true. This folklore was brought to America by German and British immigrants. Funloving American pioneers soon transferred the legend to the everpresent ground'hog and the day has been known as Groundhog Day ever since. It has became a part of the national exaggeration. Noble County Gets New Navy Recruiter Chief Kenneth E. Noble, of Coshocton, has taken over the duties of Navy recruiter in charge of the Zanesville area replacing Chief W. C. Bosley, who is retiring after 20 years service. Noble will direct recruiting activities in Noble, Muskingum, Morgan, Guernsey and Coshoc ton counties. A native of Coshocton, he en listed in the Navy in February, 1940 and was promoted to war rant boatswain during World War II. He served abroad the USS Wasp, an aircraft carrier, until she was sunk by the Japanese. He then served on the USS Cascade, a repair ship, the USS Pave, a cargo ship and the USS Gilbert Island, a "jeep" Carrier. Chief Noble will make per iodical trips to Caldwell and headquarters will be maintained at the local postoffice. One famous event that has fal tered on an annual basis during the past few years is the Coon Supper at Somerset, Ohio where the sportsmen of the county con sume great amounts of raccoon meat. The low price paid for rac coon fur in recent years has caus ed difficulty in securing enough carcasses ior the meal, usually held in January or February.
