Bluffton’s untried eagers were un able to keep pace with a veteran Vaughnsville outfit at Vaughnsville last Friday night, and went down to defeat by a score of 40 to 26. Failure to hit the ba ket from the floor hurt the Pirates quite a bit in their opening conte During the en tire first half the 1 failed to score a field goal, and ir only success was from the free throw- line. First quarter pl ind both teams unable to score co istently ,and the score at the end of the period was 2 to 2. Vaughnsville beg connecting from the field in the sec i period, howev er, and at the halfto the home team was out in front 15 7. All of Bluff ton’s points had been tallied on char ity tosses, seven of eleven attempts being successful. In the third quarter, Bluffton’s at tack began functioning for the first time, and the Pirates rolled up 13 points on six field goals and one free throw. Vaughnsville got 14 points in the same session, however, and the score at the end of the period was 29 to 20, with Bluffton still trailing. The third quarter rally marked Bluffton’s last serious bid, for in the Bowling Green university’s strong veteran quintet proved too much for Bluffton college’s green cage team last Saturday night on the Bluffton floor, and the Falcons copped the de cision 48 to 29. After pulling away to an early lead the Bowling Greer crew widened the margin gradually with a barrage of successful shots from the floor. Bluffton started slowly, and failed to score during the first nine minutes of the contest. Plenty of men saw action in the game, Bluffton using 11 and Bowling Green throwing 15 men into the me lee. Only three of the 11 who played for Bluffton failed to score. Altho rolling up an impressive total of 48 points, Bowling Green had no one particular brilliant star. Madar as, lanky center, was the top point getter for the visitors with 12, but on the w-hole the shooting was fairly evenly shared by the veteran Falcons. Reichenbach with nine points was the pace-setter for Bluffton. Backen sto got seven to stand next high. It was the first start of the season for both teams and the experience of the veteran Bowling Green outfit was apparent in the teams’ smoothly func Bluffton Boosters romped to an easy victory in their opening con test of the season by trouncing Bradfield Center, 22 to 15, in Lima league play last Thursday. Bluffton and Bradfield were tied at the close of the first quarter, 6 to 6, but th Boosters pulled ahead to a 14 to 10 lead at halftime. At the close of the third quarter the count was 20 to 12.
