Mary's Lawn Fete August 13 Annual lawn fete for benefit of St. Mary’s Catholic church will be held on the church grounds, Lawn avenue and Elm streets, Wednesday night, August 13. Lawn fetes sponsored by the church have been largely attended in past years with many from out of town coming for the event. Committees in charge are: General chairmen—Rev. Nicholas I. Lew is, 61, former Beaverdam native, will be held, at ..kh.P Rockport cemetery, Thursday afternoon at 4:00 o’clock. Mr. Lewis died at his home in East Sparta -Tuesday morning at 2:30 o’clock following a seven months’ illness. Surviving are his widow, Editoh Bogart Lewis, three children, Rich ard, Clara Jane and Mrs. Viola Pritchard all of East Sparta his father Jess of Beaverdam and two brothers, Frank and Charles Lewis of Beaverdam. The body will remain at the home in East Sparta until time for the services. New Boy Scout Troop Will Be Organized Bluffton’s second Boy Scout troop will be organized here this fall undei auspices of the Bluffton post, Ameri can Legion. Announcement of form ation of the new troop was made following the Legion meeting Monday night. Woodrow Little has been named scoutmaster for the new’ troop, mem bership in which will be open to all boys of the town. Ralph Stearns, chairman of the Legion group sponsoring the new troop, will soon announce members of the troop committee. Mrs. Harold Carr was removed from Bluffton hospital to her home in Union township, Wednesday morning where she is convalescing. Mrs. Carr was a patient in the hospital here since last March when she underwent a major operation. Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Buck land and Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Canfield of Van Buren, John Crouse and June Miller of North Baltimore and Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Harkness were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wade Bechtol and family of Grove street. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Whittemore and son of Birmingham, Mich., spent the week end at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. Devier. Mrs. Whittemore’s brother Hubert, who had spent the week visiting in Michigan returned home with them. Four young people from the Re formed churches here are spending two weeks in Tiffin attending a Sun day school workers conference at Heidelberg college. Miss Christine who was an instructor in the schools at Fairview, Ohio, the past two years will teach during the coming year at Kirtland. Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Niswander are occupying apartments of Mrs. Martha Flick above City Market grocery. The apartments were re cently vacated by Orden Smucker and family who are residing at the home of his mother, Mrs. B. D. Smucker of South Lawn avenue until their new home on Campus View is completed. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Schnegg of Plymouth, Mich., and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Schaaff and daughter of Bridgewater, Mich., visited over the week end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schnegg of East College avenue and attended the Stager school reunion, Sunday. Mrs. Schaaff and daughter remained here for a week’s stay. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Lauby and daughters Mary and Lois of Van Nuys, Calif., are spending a month at the home of his sister, Mrs. Har vey Gratz and family and visiting other relatives and friends here. Mr. Lauby who left here for the west eighteen years ago is now superin tendent of instruction in printing at the McKinley Home for Boys at Van Nuys. Misses Eloise Lora, of Bluffton Kathleen Amstutz, of Pandora and Vera Alice Bucher, of Columbus Grove and Hiram Bucher, of Bluff ton, returned Saturday night from a motor trip thru the south. They left a week previous, accompanying Herbert Kindle to Camp Shelby, Miss., after his furlough here. Coming Wedding Wedding of Miss Neva Bigler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Big ler of South Main street, and Dale M. Zeller, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Zeller of Upper Sandusky, will take place at the home of the bride’s parents Saturday morning, August 16. Mr. Zeller is an instructor in Tiffin university and the couple will live in Tiffin. Miss Bigler has been teaching in the public schools at Tiffin. She graduated from Bluffton High school in the class of 1927 and from Bluffton college in the class of 1933. Service Society The Women’s Society of Christian Service of the Methodist church will meet in the church b’asement for a picnic supper Thursday night at 6:00 o’clock. Hostesses are Mrs. Sybil Mollett, Mrs. Alva Scoles, Mrs. B. R. Shaffer and Mrs. Nelson Steiner. The program is in charge of Mrs. Frank Todd and Mrs. Wm. Augsburger. Devotions are in charge of Mrs. Don Berry. Garden Club The tenth anniversary of the Bluffton Garden club will be cele brated in a meeting of the organiza tion to be held on the lawn at the residence of E. S. Lape Friday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock. Assistant hostesses are Mrs. P. E. Whitmer, Mrs. Harvey Beidler and Miss Edith Amstutz. Miss M’Della Moon, a member of the club recently has been made chairman of the Northwest Ohio Conservation committee, it was an nounced the first of the week. Rinchland Circle The Richland Community Circle will entertain their families at a weiner roast to be held at the Buck eye lake Thursday night. Wedding Shower Honoring Rev. and Mrs. G. T. Soldner of Cherry street, members of the council of the First Men nonite church entertained the recent ly wed couple at the parsonage on South Jackson street Friday night. Farm Woman’s Club The Farm Woman’s club of Orange township will hold a picnic for members and their families at the Orange Center community house Thursday night, August 7, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Wilson and family of Findlay visited with Mr. and Mrs. Levi Oberly Sunday and later visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Reno Oberly. Their son Wade, who was operated on recent ly for appendicitis is improving nicely at home. Council Approves Tax Levy Transfer Coming to the aid of the Bluffton board of education which is seeking an additional’ $2,400 for the schools here during the next fiscal year, the Bluffton town council agreed to the transfer outside the ten mill limita tion of a levy of .61 mill for bond retirement now levied inside the ten mill limit. The council at its meeting Mon day night agreed to the proposal the county auditor. which originated from the office of By transfer of the council’s levy of .61 mill outside the ten mill limitation, a similar levy inside the limitation will be available to the board of education. This will pro vide, it is estimated, $1,200, increas ing the tax within the corporation by that amount. The communication from the audi tor did not state by what means the balance sought for the schools would be raised, altho this, presumably will come from that part of the school district outside Bluffton. Tax duplicate of the entire school district is slightly over four million dollars and divided about equally be tween Bluffton corporation and the rural district outside the town. Mr. and Mrs. Greenawalt of Ada are occupying apartments in the home of the late Mis. Wm. Lewis at North Lawn avenue and Vine street. Rev. and Mrs. Wm. Motter, for merly of near Bluffton who have been granted a year’s leave of ab sence from his pastorate in Dayton are located on their farm west of Bluffton. Ben Augsburger who is convalesc ing following an operation at Bluff ton hospital was removed to his home on West Elm street in the Stanley Basinger ambulance, Wed nesday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Scholfield and sons Paul and George of Lafayette Mrs. Alta Scholfield and Miss Jeanne Metogen of Lima spent Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Gable of South Jackson street. Word was received here this week of the death Monday of Rev. M. M. Horsch, pastor of the Mennonite church at Upland, Calif., who has been prominent in conference work of the church for many years. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Busley and daughter Louise and niece, Miss Linda Fuller of Canal Winchester were the guests Tuesday at the home of Rev. and Mrs. J. A. Weed.
