THURSDAY, MAY 7, 1942 High School Places High In Scholarship Honorable mention was given to the Bluffton High school scholastic team competing in the annual schol arship tests conducted at Bowling Green State university Saturday. Bluffton competed with division two schools of enrollment less than 400 in the northwestern part of Ohio. Other schools receiving hon orable mention were Ottawa Sts. Grove Street Greenhouses. New Officers Named At Lions Meeting I. B. Beeshy was named president of the Bluffton Lions club at the annual election meeting of the or ganization at the Walnut Grill Tues day night. Other officers named at the meet ing include: Dr. B. W. Travis, 1st vice-president E. S. Lape, 2nd vice president William Edwards, 3rd vice-president Stanley Basinger, sec retary C. G. Cobum, treasurer Dr. Gordon Bixel, tail twister Paul Detwiler, Lion tamer A. C. Burcky, Ross Bogart, new members on the board of directors. Committee chairmen will be an nounced in the near future. Junior-Senior Reception May 15 Plans have been completed for the Bluffton High school junior-senior reception to beld at the auditorium and gymnasium on May 15 starting at 8 o’clock. The program will be presented in the auditorium and the dancing will be held in the gymnasium. The Ohio Northern Collegieteers, an eight piece swing band, will furnish the music for the dancing to be held in the gymnasium starting at 9 o’clock. In view’ of war time economy it has been decided by the class to eliminate the banquet feature of the occasion and the elaborate decora tions usually accompanying the ban quet. General chairman of arrangements is James Gratz, president of the junior class. Other members of the general committee are: Barbara Jean Triplett, Raymond Schumacher, Ellen Basinger, Eileen Moser, Aline Hilty. Other committees are: Decorations—Doris Dunifon, Mild red Campbell properties and print ing—Denard Loganbill, John Schmidt and Herbert Conrad. Buckeye Caretakers Confirmed By Council Confirmation of the nomination of Robert Cooney and Peter Schmidt, Bluffton High school athletes, as caretakers of the Buckeye swimming lake, was given at the meeting of the towrn council Monday night. Mayor W. A. Howe nominated the boys for the positions two weeks ago and presented the names for confir mation at the council meeting. Buckeye lake is owmed by the Cen tral Ohio Light and Pou’er company and leased to the town as a bathing and recreation center. Both Cooney and Schmidt are sen iors at the high school and will be gin their duties when school closes late in May. Turbine Installation To Start Next Week With concrete poured for the foundation for the recently purchased turbo-generator at the Bluffton muni cipal wrater works and electric light plant, installation operations are ex pected to begin by the middle of next week. It is necessary for the foundation block to be thoroughly cured before the turbine installation can start. W .T. Barrows, consulting engineer and the Westinghouse supervising en gineer will take charge of the in stallation at that time. Lions To Meet With Findlay Club Tuesday Members of the Bluffton Lions club will meet w’ith the Findlay Lions at the Findlay’ Y. M. C. A. next Tues day night at 6:15 o’clock. The Bluffton club will furnish the program at the Findlay meeting. Ensign Wade Lape will speak and Roger How’e will sing at the meet ing. The Findlay Lions met with the Bluffton club at the Walnut Grill here two weeks ago and at that time furnished the program for the Bluffton meeting. College Broadcast Members of the faculty of the Bluffton college music department will be featured in the weekly col lege broadcast over Lima station WLOK Thursday at 9:30 o’clock. Appearing on the program w’ill be Miss Elizabeth Higley, Mrs. Pearl Bogart Mann, Prof. Sidney Hauen stein, Prof. Russell A. Lantz. Coming Wedding Wedding of Miss Wilma Nonna maker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Announcement of the coming wedding was made at Ropp hall, Bluffton college dormitory, Saturday night when dinner was interrupted by the playing of Lohengrin’s wed ding march with Robert Neuensch wander of Quakkertown, Pa., at the piano. Date of the coming nuptials was annouced by Leland Lehman, head waiter, of Berne, Ind. Rev. A. C. Schultz, instructor in Biblical literature at the college, will officiate at the ceremony. Miss Nonnamaker and Mr. Mumma both graduated from Bluffton High school in the class of 1939 and both are students at Bluffton college where Mr. Mumma is taking a pre-minis terial course. Women’s Council The Women’s Council of the Bluffton High school Girl Reserves organization will meet at the Girl Reserves club rooms at the high school Friday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Election of officers will take place at this meeting. Christian Service Society The Women’s Society of Christian Service of the Methodist church will meet at the home of Mrs. Fred Hahn Thursday night. Assistant host esses will be: Mrs. Nelson Steiner, Mrs. J. V. Stage and Mrs. R. G. Whisler. Mrs. M. C. Geiger is the program leader. Richland Community Circle The Richland Community Circle will meet at the home of Mrs. Lena Gratz on Thursday, May 14. Helen Moser is assistant hostess. Ebenezer -Broadcast Mother’s Day music will be fea tured on the weekly broadcast of the Ebenezer Mennonite church over Findlay radio station WFIN Friday night at 7:15 o’clock. Music will be provided by Mrs. Milo Lora, Mrs. Francis Niswander, Clayton Bucher and Francis Niswander. High School Musicians In State Competition Bluffton High school musicians who received high ratings in the solo and ensemble elimination con test at Ada on April 11, will com pete in the final state contest at Co lumbus on Saturday. Contestants from 55 northwestern Ohio schools were entered in the Ada elimination. Bluffton contest ants are those of Prof. Sidney Hau enstein in the instrumental division and Miss Elizabeth Higley of the vocal division. Entered at the Columbus meet are: Class A: Mezzo soprano solo, Betty Holtkamp baritone solo, Roger Howe xylophone solo, Barbara Jean Triplett. Class B: Mixed ensemble and girls ensemble clarinet quartet, James Stratton, Robert Amstutz, Ralph Althaus, Hugh Chamberlain. Alto solo, Ruth Hankish violin solo, Alice Jean Bixel cello solo, Mary Margaret Basinger. String quartet—Neil Neuensch wander, Alice Jean Bixel, Jane Howe, Mary Margaret Basinger. Elected Member Of Honorary Society Wade Huber, son of Mr. and Mrs. Waldo Huber, last week was initiat ed into Nu Theta Kappa, honorary fraternity at Ohio Northern Uni versity. Huber is a junior in mechanical engineering. The honorary frater nity accords recognition to engineer ing students who have excelled in scholastic activity. Another film covering fishing from airplanes in Florida will be shown through the courtesy of Eastern Air Lines.
