PAGE SIX ALLEN COUNTY $10 Tire Costs Man $200 The rarity of automobile tires since the tire rationing program was invoked by the federal government was strongly reflected in Van Wert Wednesday when a stolen second hand auto tire cost a Spencerville man $200 and court costs. The man is Eugene Smart who according to local officers, is a parolee. Smart entered a plea of guilty to a charge of stealing a tire valued at $10, the property of Russell Shaw of Van Wert. Lima Tank Shop To Expand Plans for a $200,000 expansion of the Army tank shop at the Lima Locomotive Works were announced Saturday as a building permit for an addition to the government manu facturing structure was issued at city hall. The addition will almost double the plant’s floor space. The new addition will be 260 by 278 feet, providing 70,280 square feet more floor space. The present army tank shop is 278 by 363 feet. Last Half Of Tax Collection Starts The books of Allen County Treas urer Ray W. Barnett now are open to receive taxes for the last half of 1941, he announced Saturday. It is the regular semi-annual real estate tax collection known as the June collection. The closing date has been set at September 12, 1942. To date there has been $126,548.86 taken in during the current collec tion of personal and classified taxes. Man Dies In Auto Crash Harley Dunson, 49, Hardin county farmer, suffered fatal injures late Wednesday when the automobile in which he was riding overturned three times on Route 30, a mile east of Lima. Dunson suffered a fractured skull and internal injuries when he was thrown from the car, driven by John Lightner, 39, of Kenton Route 2. He was taken to Memorial hospital where he died at 1 a. m. Thursday, three hours after the accident. Naval Train ing School Ohio Northern University officials announced the approval of the school’s facilities for a Navy train ing program. Approval was made by the Bureau of Navigation of the Navy Depart ment under the V-I accredited col lege program which allows the school to offer freshmen and sophomores, aged 17 through 19 years, an oppor tunity to remain in college and be come commissioned officers. Under the plan students can apply for enlistment as apprentice sea men, but remain in college for two years’ work. Dr. Small Resigns Uni versity Post Dr. Thomas J. Smull, a member of the staff of Ohio Northern Univers ity since 1917, has announced he will retire from active duty June 30 to devote his time to professional en gineering duties. He was business manager for the university from 1929 to 1941 when he assumed charge of developing an endowment and building program. PUTNAM COUNTY 332 Seniors To Graduate Commencement in the Putnam county schools will begin May 20 and end May 28 with 332 seniors in the 13 high schools receiving diplom as, County Supt. Carl D. Vermilya reported. The largest class will be graduated from Continental-Palmer high school which will present 54 dipomas. Two other large classes of 43 each will receive honors from Columbus Grove and Leipsic high schools. Pandora with 10 will have the smallest senioi* class. Survives 6,900-Volt Shock George White, 36, lineman, em ploye of The Ohio Power company was reported recovering in Memor ial hospital aftei* he came into con tact with a 6,900-volt transmission line north of Leipsic Wednesday morning. White was working with a crew on what is known as the firms’ Leipsic-Deshler line. Ohio Power company officials said they had not yet determined circum stances surrounding the mishap but would conduct an investigation im mediately. Crawfis College May Be Sold Definite plans for selling the Craw fis college property northwest of Gil boa will be delayed a few weeks until it is determined whether furth er court litigation will block it. This was reported Wednesday by officials of the Blanchard township board of education after it met to discuss the sale plans. It was point ed out'during the meeting that heirs of the late John Crawfis may appeal their suit to block the sale. On Monday a decision in Putnam county common pleas court gave the school board sole possession of the property and lifted an injunction which prevented the sale of the college buildings and land adjoining them. The court suit was filed by Lewis Crawfis and about 100 heirs against the township school board two years ago. Leg Broke In Peculiar Mishap Mrs. Catherine Nartker, of near Glandorf, suffered a fractured leg in a peculiar accident at her farm home Sunday evening, and was brought to the office of an Ottawa physician for treatment. Mrs. Nartker was feeding the family dog when a strange auto mobile came into the driveway. The dog started to run toward the car, and in doing so, entangled Mrs. Nartker in the chain to which he was attached, and threw her to the ground. Better Grade Cattle Raised Farmers of Putnam county who attended the annual county beef cat tle tour and banquet last week learn ed that while there aren’t as many cattle raised in this county the gen eral quality of the cattle is high with practically no common stock. This declaration was the keynote of speakers at the banquet held in the high school in Columbus Grove as the climax of the 1942 cattle tour. High pork prices emphasize the importance of immunizing pigs against cholera. Rockport Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Marshall of Columbus spent the week end with their parents in this vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Allison of Carey were Sunday dinner guests of Mrs. Lena Rockhill. Mrs. Roy Moser passed away Sun day night in Bluffton hospital fol lowing a brief illness with pneu monia and a throat infection. She leaves her husband and four small children, who have the sympathy of the community. Funeral services were held at 10:30 Wednesday in the Diller funeral home in Bluffton with burial in Rockport cemetery. Herbert Marshall, Jr., of Marys ville was a Thursday night guest of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert B. Marshall. Rev. Wiley of the Congregational Christian church of Vaughnsville occupied the pulpit at the local M. E. Church Sunday evening. At the morning Sunday school hour two members of the Gideons, Mr. Ross from Orrville and Mr. Smith pre sented their work. A group of friends and relatives gathered at the Charles Van Meter home Sunday to help Mrs. Van Meter celebrate her birthday anni versary.
