THURSDAY. JUNE 25, 1912 Wage earners in Bluffton have bought a total of $181,634 in war bonds and stamps or an average of $32 per month per person for the month of January to the present, it was announced this week by Norman Triplett, chairman of the Bluffton defense savings committee. The monthly average has been $33,024 so far this year. This would constitute an average purchase of $16 for every man, woman and child in town or figuring on the basis of 1,000 wage earners the average pur chase would be about $32 per month. Monthly breakdown of purchases is as follows: January, $21,628 Feb ruary, $10,826 March, $29,044 April, $83,452 May, $31,055 first two weeks in June, $5,629. With the national war savings or ganization given a quota of $1,000, 000,000 for the month of July and each month thereafter, it has been urged by Triplett that all Bluffton residents meet their pledges as a very minimum amount and to pur chase as much more as is possible. The quotas of $600,000,000 in May and $800,000,000 are being met but considerable extra effort will be needed to meet the monthly billion dollar quota. Swank Brothers In Naval Service Harland Roy Swank, 19, of Bluff ton, son of George H. Swank, is the second in his family to join the U. S. Navy. Swank, now undergoing his basic Naval training at the Newport, R. I., Station, preparatory to possible fur ther instruction in one of the Navy’s fifty-four trade and technical schools, has a brother, Joseph, who holds the rating of aviation metalsmith. Harland was graduated from Bluffton high school in 1941 and for eight months worked as stock clerk at the Triplett Electrical Insrument company in Bluffon. He was a member of the Hi-Y club and presi dent of his senior class. He seeks a rating as Aviation Ordnanceman. Twenty-seven of the fifty-four trade and technical schools are open to recruits on a competitive basis. These institutions train the thousands of skilled workers and teehicians ne cessary to man the Country’s rapidly expanding fleet.
