THURSDAY. JAN. 7, 1943 Death Claims Two Pandora Residents Funeral services for Mrs. Jacob Haas, 70, wall be held at St. John Mennonite church, Thursday after noon at 2 o’clock with Rev. P. J. Boehr officiating. Interment will be in the Clymer cemetery. She died at her home here Monday night. Death was due to a heart attack. Surviving are her husband, Rev. Jacob Haas four sons: Walter of Bluffton Harvey of Mt. Cory Al bert of Col. Grove, and Milford Haas of Pandora, and three daughters: Mrs. Enos Walters of Mt. Cory Miss Mary Haas missionary in Nigeria, South Africa, and Mrs. Everett Francis of Detroit. Also surviving are three brothers and three sisters: Menno, Eli and Walter Augsburger, all of Bluffton Mrs. Jesse Welty and Mrs. I. W. Mrs. Anna Green Dies Funeral services for Mrs. Anna Elizabeth Green, 80, were held at the Methodist church Wednesday afternoon with Rev. Mosslander of ficiating. Interment was in the Clymer cemetery. Mrs. Green died Sunday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Owen Stoody. Death was due to infirmities. Knox, Ky., is spending a ten days’ furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Amstutz of Orange township. Miss Theola Steiner has returned from a visit over the holidays with Sgt. Robert Geary at Camp Crowder, Missouri. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Gilbert and little son of Bryan visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Russell Amstutz and daughter Sharon Kaye. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Baechler and Miss Anna ZuIIiger of Lima were Friday guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Vilas Lehman and son of North Jackson street. Mrs. Sadie Stearns and daughters Misses Erma and Mamie Stearns of Upper Sandusky spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Stearns and family of Spring street. Miss Letha Niswander, instructor in the schools at Bellevue visited friends here over the holidays. Her mother Mrs. Ethel Niswander also of Bellevue spent the week end here. Mrs. James Griffith, the former Miss Zitella Getties, whose marriage to Lt. James Griffith took place at West Palm Beach, Florida, during the holiday season, returned here Tuesday. Mrs. Eva Patterson from her home on South Main street to the Blutfton hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Minor Thut, Mrs. Hiram Althaus and Mrs. Amos Thut visited at the home of Ray Thut in Springfield on New Year’s day. Mrs. Amos Thut remained there for a week’s visit. Mrs. Elva Zimmerly has returned from Texas where she spent the Christmas holidays with her son, Cadet Myron Welty and Mrs. Welty at San Antonio. She also visited an old school friend at Abilene whom she had not seen in thiry years. Miss Mary Stearns returned Sun day to Tiffin where she is a student in Heidelberg college after spending the Christmas vacation with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Stearns and family of Spring street and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Hilbish and family at Columbus. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Lora visited at the home of Mrs. Peter Lora and Miss Clara Lora, over the week end. Mr. and Mrs. Lora were enroute from Sullivan, Ind., to Cleveland where he is attending a meeting of the executive committeemen of the Federation of Long Line Telephone Workers. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Bogart return ed Thursday from Mishawaka, Ind., where they spent a week at the home of their daughter, Mrs. Lysle Baumgartner and family. They were accompanied home by their grand daughter, Miss Jeanne Baumgartner, student in Bowling Green university and George Swank, high school in structor here, who also spent the holidays at the Baumgartner home in Miskawaka. Funeral Services For Charles Vertner Funeral services for Charles Vert ner, 78, retired threshing machine and sawmill operator, were held at the Diller Funeral home Wednesday afternoon. He died Mohday after noon at 3 o’clock in the Allen county hospital following a six months ill ness. The son of Jefferson and Eleanor (Rockhill) Vertner he was born in Monroe township, Allen county, May 16, 1864. At the time of his death he lived at North Baxter street in Lima. A member of a family of 13 child ren, he is survived only by a broth er, James Vertner of Beaverdam. Rev. Bernard Baughn officiated at the funeral services. Burial was at Rockport cemetery. OHIO Former Resident Dies After Fall Funeral services for Paul Knep per, 25, accident victim, former Orange township resident, were held Sunday afternoon at the Arcadia Methodist church. He died from a fractured skull resulting from a fall down the stairs of a Fostoria restaurant. He lived for two hours after the accident and died at the ostoria City hospital at 10:30 o’clock New Year’s eve. Mr. Knepper opened the basement door believing it led to the men’s room. Someone called to him, to warn him, just as he was about to step inside. He looked around, lost his balance and tumbled to the bot tom of the stairs. He was born in Rawson July 12, 1917, the son of Fred and Mattie Knepper, formerly of Orange town ship. He was employed by the Elec tric Auto Light Co. of Fostoria. He was married to Bonnie Henry, also of Orange township, in 1936. He is survived by his wife, his par ents, three children, Norman, Rex and Mary Elizabeth and the follow ing brothers and sisters: Garnet and Leland Knepper of Bloomdale John of Elmore Donald of Parma Roland, Robert and Juanita of Fos toria. He attended Bluffton High school. He was also a member of the Fra ternal Order of Eagles. Rev. W. L. Alexander, pastor of the Arcadia Methodist church, offi ciated at the services. Burial was at the Clymer cemetery near Mt. Cory. Settlement The Missionary Band of the Eben ezer church held their onthly meet ing in the home of Mi.-- Eileen Moser on Tuesday evening with Mrs. Emer son Slotterback, speaker. Pvt. James Moser, 11th General Hospital, Camp Livingston, La., is on furlough for a ten day visit with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Moser and family west of Bluffton. Mr. and Mrs. Wilmer Gratz and family were Sunday dinner guests of his brother, Omer Gratz and family. It being their son Arthur’s ninth birthday anniversary. Mrs. Walter Neuenschwander of Butler, Ind., accompanied Omer Gratz to Pittsburgh on Tuesday, where she will visit her daughter. Rev. and Mrs. Homer Becker and daughter Rachel, this week Mrs. Jacob Haas suddenly passed away at their home in town Monday evening at the age 70 years. Fun eral services are be held at the St. John chu ch where she was a member on Thursday afternoon. Services are to be in charge of Rev. P. J. Boehr and assisted by Rev. John Esau. The bereaved family has the sympathy of their many rel atives and friends. Mrs. Ben Amstutz left last week end for Berne, Ind., to spend some time with relative*. The Advisory Council met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Moser on Tuesday evening. Roads have been very slippery since the rain and sleet Sunday. Tel ephone and high tension lines have been damaged seriously. It may be many days before our rural patrons will again be having electrical serv ices. School sessions in Pandora have been discontinued for the first three days of this week because of icy roads. Mr. and Mrs. Omar Gratz and family visited Sunday evening with Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Kohli and fam ily. Mrs. Anna Green who resided in this community for many years, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Owen Stoody northwest of Pandora on Sunday. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Pandora on Wednesday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Wilmer Gratz and family visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Omar Gratz and family last Sunday. The Parent-Teachers association of Pandora are to hold their regular session on Tuesday evening of next week, instead of Wednesday evening because of the Farmers’ Institute. Haydn Basinger is numbered among the sick. The following officers were elected at the annual business meeting at St. John church on New Year’s Day: Deacon, Menno Augsburger trustee, Ellis Steiner chorister, Earl Leh man pianist, Susie Welty treasur er, Maurice Grismore correspondent to church papers, Mrs. P. J. Boehr and John Schneck member of mu sic committee, Mrs. Clarence Schneck head usher, Ambrose Basinger sec retary, H. M. Kohli. Many games were played with Robert Powell and Lehr Jay Reese in charge. Norma Jones, president of the class took charge of a business meeting. Miss Meredith Stepleton will be assistant hostess. Installation of officers will be held. Engagement Announced Mr. and Mrs. Morris L. Swick, of Coldwater, announce the engagement of his daughter, Kathryn, of this place, to Pvt. John Jr. Mankey, son of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Mankey, of Ada. No date has been set for the wedding. The bride elect was graduated from Bluffton High school. Mr. Mankey was employed on the Pennsylvania Railroad until entering military service, and is now in Camp Shelby, Miss. Richland Community Circle Richland Community circle will meet at the home of Mrs. J. S. Steiner, Thursday, Jan. 14 for an all day Red Cross sewing. Hospital Auxiliary The Women’s Auxiliary of the hospital will meet at Nurses’ head quarters next Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 p. in. Jitsu Tau Club The Jitsu Tau club will meet at the home of Mrs. Ross Irwin of North Main street, this Wednesday night at 7:30 o’clock. Bridal Shower Honoring Mrs. Robert E. Barnett, the former Miss Mary Marshall, a miscellaneous shower was held at the home of Miss Josephine Niswander, northeast of town Saturday night. Present were: The Misses Marcile and Lucille Steiner, Roberta Biery, Margaret Berky, Mrs. Paul Detwiler, Mrs. Paul Emmert, Mrs. Gail Ro kosky, Mrs. Barnett and the hostess, Miss Niswander. Announce Engagement Announcement of the engagement of Miss Jeanne Baumgartner and George Swank, Jr., was made on New Year’s eve. The announcement was made at a dance attended by members of the younger set at the Legion hall. Miss Baumgartner is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lysle Baumgartner of Mishawaka, Ind.,- former Bluffton residents. She is this year a student at Bowling Green State university. Mr. Swank, son of George Swank. Sr., is instructor and athletic coach in Bluffton high school. No date for the wedding was given. Announce Engagement Engagement of Miss Mildred Unruh, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. H. T. Unruh, formerly of Bluffton and now living in Hillsboro, Kans., to Donald V. Bumgarner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bumgarner of Sharon, Kans., was announced on Christmas eve. Miss Unruh graduated from Bluff ton High school in the class of 1938 and later attended Bluffton college. She graduated from Bethel college in the class of 1942. At present she is an instructor in home economics and music in the high school at Lehigh, Kans. Mr. Bumgamer graduated from Attica High school in Kansas and from Bethel college in 1942. As soon as conditions permit he will continue graduate study in the seminary. Rev. Unruh was formerly pastur of the First Mennonite church here. W. s. c. s. The Women’s Society of Christian Service of the Methodist church will meet at the home of Mrs. Edith Mann Thursday night at 8 o’clock. Mrs. Cliff West and Mrs. Gerald Berry are assistant hostesses. Legion Auxiliary The Bluffton Legion Auxiliary will meet in the Legion hall next Tues day night. Fudl Oil Coupon No. 3 Good For 11 Gallons An extra gallon of oil is rated by fuel oil coupon No. 3, it was an nounced this week by the war price and rationing board offices. The coupon, which is good until February 20, will honor 11 gallons of fuel oil instead of 10 gallons, its former value. The coupon became valid Dec. 23 and many of the oil dealers having received previous word of the addi tional gallon granted, honored the coupons for 11 gallons. However, those who received only 10 gallons of fuel oil with this cou pon may notify their oil dealer and he will supply them with the extra gallon of oil, it was stated. Lima Mission Feeds 7,877 In Past Year During the past year the Lima City Mission has fed 7,877 people and gave lodging to 2,435 people, it was announced this week by the Rev. Adam Welty .superintendent. The mortgage on the building was reduced from $9,420 to $5,632 dur ing the past year, it was announced by Rev. Welty.
