THURSDAY, JUNE 24, 1943 Pioneer Picnic At Elida Is Cancelled For the first time in the history of the society, the Elida Pioneer so ciety picnic, scheduled to be held the second Thursday in August, has been cancelled, it was announced this week. The meeting would have been the 49th annual picnic of the group and reason for the cancellation was food and gasoline rationing and other factors due to war conditions. Large crowds, including people from the Bluffton district, attended the picnics and officials are hopeful that the meeting may be arranged for next year. At Food Conference Harry F. Barnes, instructor in vo cational-agriculture at Bluffton High school, was one of 250 Ohio teachers who attended the annual conference of vocational agriculture teachers held at Ohio State university last week. The four-day meeting centered about ways and means vocational ag riculture teachers could help to in crease food production in spite of farm labor and machinery shortages. A. Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Hilty and son Jerry Lynn, spent Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alton Wagner and daughter of Findlay. Miss Ruth Steiner of Poplar street is attending the summer school of Western Reserve university in Cleve land specializing in library science. Mrs. Ethel Roberts and daughter Virginia spent the \Veek-end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Myron Elliott and daughters at Columbus Grove. Evan Leiber who is in army train ing is home on furlough from a camp in Missouri to visit his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. Cal Leiber east of Beaverdam. Mr. and Mrs. Al Hinson and fam ily of Cincinnati are spending sev eral days at the home of her par ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Steiner of Thurman street. Mrs. N. W. Cunningham of South Jackson street is spending several weeks at the homes of Thos. Don aghue of Fremont and George Don aghue of Detroit. Donald Wayne Lehman, 1/c, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lehman has been transferred from Melville, R. I., to New York city where he will be stationed for several weeks. Miss Carolyn Romey is attending the national convention of Phi Beta Psi sorority held Tuesday and Wed nesday at the Netherland-Plaza hotel in Cincinnati. She is a delegate from the Lima Iota Epsilon chapter. Mrs. James Griffith, the former Miss Zitella Getties, will leave on Thursday of next week for San Ra fael, Calif., a San Francisco suburb, where she will join her husband, Lt. Griffith cf the army air force stationed at that place. Fred Herr, former Bluffton insur ance man who has been stationed at an army camp near Vancouver, Wash., arrived here Tuesday morning on fur lough. He w’as accompanied by his wife who returned home after spend ing a week with her husband. Herr will leave on his return to camp on Wednesday of next week. Cpl. and Mrs. Joe Mumma and daughter JoAnn spent several days last week with his parents Mr. and Mrs. Forest Mumma on Mound street last week. They returned to Wil mington, N. C., where Cpl. Mumma is in training at Camp Davis. He was inducted into the coast artillery, anti-aircraft division in August of last year. Mrs. Evan Soash of this place left Tuesday to visit her husband who is in naval service, stationed at Norfolk, Va. Mrs. Clarence Hickey, of Toledo, visited her mother, Mrs. Martha Flick last week from Tuesday thru Thursday. Mrs. Herman Badertscher and in 1 fant were removed from Bluffton hospital to their home in Arlington in the Stanley Basinger ambulance. Sgt. Raymond Greding of Wend over Field, Utah, is home on fur lough visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Greding of West College avenue. Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Augsburger and sons Buddy and Don were guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Tomlinson and sons of Lima, Sunday evening. Morris and Ropp Triplett, station ed at the army air base at Wright fiield near Dayton, spent the week end with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Triplett. Elbert Kohli, of the merchant marine service stopped here Wednes day to visit his mother, Mrs. Eva Kohli of West Elm street. He is en route from Baltimore to San Fran cisco. Florence Kay and Richard Lee Reinhard of Ada returned to their home, Sunday after a several weeks’ visit with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Lora of South Main stsreet. J. visited at the home of their son, Rev. and Mrs. Ernest Bigelow of South Jackson street. Sunday. Mrs. Bigelow’s brother, John Boyd of Ann Arbor, Mich., vis ited here several days last week and returned to resume his studies at the University of Michigan medical school on Monday. Clyde Agner of Columbus visited his aunt, Mrs. James Crow last week. Miss Geraldine Basinger left Sun day for Columbus where she started attending Ohio State university this week. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schutz are the parents of a baby daughter, born last Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Paul ’Krohn and sons of Detroit, Mich., spent several days last week with his mother, Mrs. Zella Krohn. Miss Dorothy Agner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Agner and How ard Reichenbach of near Bluffton were untited in marriage Saturday evening. Ernest Boehr left Sunday for Camp Grant, III., after spending a two week’s furlough here before en tering the service. Ruth Bixel visited at the home of her sister, Mrs. Raymond Miller and family at Smithville the fore part of this week. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Steiner and fam ily visited in the Archil Abegglin home near Rawson, Sunday after noon. The Rev. Harvey Mitchell family visited their parents near Peoria, Ill. last week and this week. Dan Gilbert, a noted author and speaker of Washington D. C. will speak at the St. John Mennonite church, Friday and Saturday even ing and Sunday morning. He 'will also speak Sunday afternoon at the Mission church at 3 o’clock. William Steiner, Jr., of the Great Lakes Naval Training school spent the week-end here. Adam Suter, aged 80, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Clarence Burkholder last Saturday. The funeral was held at the Grace Mennonite church, Monday. Clubs, aQodgeS and Societies Bridal Shower Mrs. W. A. Stratton entertained at her home with a miscellaneous shower, Friday evening for her sis ter-in-law, Mrs. Frank Houston, formerly Marjorie Stratton. The evening was spent in playing bunco with prizes going to Mrs. H. E. Augsburger and Miss Emma Hilty who presented them to the bride. Many useful and beautiful gifts were received by the bride. The regular meeting of the Gert rude Hoy Missionary Circle has been postponed until Monday night, July 12. The meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Helen Maxwell Naas of near Cairo. Wedding June 30 Wedding of Miss Josephine Nis wander, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Niswander, north of town and Rev. Geo. H. Klinefelter of Mechan icsburg, Pa., will take place at the St. John’s Reformed church next Wednesday night, June 30, at 7:30 o’clock. The custom of open church will be observed. Dr. A. O. Miller, a professor at Heidelberg college, Tiffin will offi ciate at the ceremony. Miss Niswander graduated from Bluffton High school in the class of 1938 and from Heidleberg college in the class of 194(2. During the past year she taught mathematics at Oak Harbor High school. Rev. Klinefelter graduated from Heidleberg college in the class of 1938 and from the church seminary at Lancaster, Pa., on May 5. He was elected pastor of the Reformed church at Mechanicsberg, Pa., at which place the couple will live at the church parsonage. w. s. c. s. The Women’s Society of Christian Service of the Methodist church will meet with Mrs. Hiram Huser on Thursday, July 1. Mrs. Wilson Hawk Mrs. Cliff West and Mrs. Edith Mann are assistant hostesses. I Shower for Bride Honoring Mrs. Edward Schumach-1 er, formerly Miss Ruth Oyer, a shower was held at the home of Mrs. Racine Warren, Thursday even ing. A pot-luck dinner was served after which games were played. Brotherhood Meeting The Men’s brotherhood of the Em manuel’s and St. John’s Reformed churches will hold their regular meeting at the Emmanuel’s church, Thursday night at 8:30 o’clock. Rev. J. N. Smucker, pastor of the First Mennonite church, will speak about his experiences in reconstruc tioi work in foreign countries after the last World War. The fifteenth annual reunion of the Nicholas Schaeublin family will be held at the Walnut Grill, Sunday, June 27. Elmer Schaublin, Pres. Funeral Services Are Held For Adam Suter Funeral services for Adam Suter, 80, of Pandora, were held at the Grace Mennonite church in Pandora Monday afternoon. Mr. Suter died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Clarence Burkholder, a mile and a half northwest of Bluffton late Fri day. Rev. Forrest Musser, pastor and Rev. Paul E. Whitmer, former past or, officiated at the services. Suter was born Sept. 27, 1863, in Riley township and was engaged in farming until his retirement. He was a member of the Grace Men nonite church. Surviving are five daughters: Mrs. Elvina Burkholder, of near Bluffton at whose home he died Mrs. Clara Locher, Mrs. Elizabeth Lehman and Mrs. Sylvia Geiger of Pandora Mrs. Verna Hilty, Deerfield, Ohio and three sons, Dr. Waldo Suter of Waterville, Homer of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Harley of Ft. Wayne. Burial was made at the Pleasant Ridge cemetery near Pandora. Family Gathering A family gathering was held at the home of Mrs. Mary Ann Zim merman of East Colege avenue, Sun day, in honor of Corp. Noah Zim merman, Jr., of Camp Adair, Oregon, who has a fifteen-day furlough. Those present to enjoy the occa sion were Mr. and Mrs. Hiram L.
