SHORTS AND MIDDLINGS Reports on sale of farm lands in Ohio indicate there have been some decreas es in the rate of transfers of title in 1944 as compared with 1943. Land prices continued to rise during the second quarter of 1944. The percent age of farms bought by active farm operators, as compared with non-farm buyers, increased in 1944, and about one out of every four farm tranfers in Ohio in 1944 has been to a previous tenant farmer. Good management and high produc ing livestock permitted 12 owners of Ohio dairy -poultry farms to get a return of $1.64 for every dollar's worth of feed in 1943 while 12 other men on the same type of farms ob-. tained only $1.46. Farmers who ob tained the $1.64 bought 68.9 per cent of the feed used and the other group bought 64.7 per cent of the feed for their livestock. On the basis of August 1 conditions, the 1944 U. S. crop of late onions es timated at 17,320,000 sacks, each con taining 100 pounds. This would be 51 per cent larger than the 1943 crop and 47 per cent greater than the 1933-42 average annual production. Eighteen western states increased their onion acreage 133 percent over 1943 plant ings. August, September and October sales of fed cattle from the combelt states may not 'be 50 per cent of the number sold in the same months of 1943. The demand for stockers and feeders increased in July and August and more cattle went into feedlots in those months than in the same months in 1943, and market men expect fur ther improvement in the demand for stockers and feeders.
