payment of the fine within five days.
The court took similar action in
the case of Morris Sturgis, Kenton
meat dealer in suspending the prison
sentence, but assessed a $500 fine.
Mr. Sturgis also was convicted of
violating an injunction issued last
Jan. 4 regarding compliance with
OPA regulations.

United Effort To Aid
Vets Urged By Editor
Grove Patterson, editor of The
Toledo Blade, told 225 Lima club
men that Americans must have a
united spirit to win the war and an
equally united spirit to be ready to
help the returning service men when
the war is won.
Mr. Patterson told Kiwanians and
Cooperative Club members that of
the four million Americans under

every 80 found adequate provision
for his welfare on his return.

Lima councilmen voted to double
the salaries of future councilmen, in

Clarence Coffman, 54, was indicted
by an Allen county grand jury on a

Arthur Ray Sheldon, 11, son of

tured skull and possible internal in
juries in a 25-foot fall from a hay
mow at his farm home. He is in
Findlay Hospital.

Sergeants Killed
Sergt. John William McKinley, 25,
was killed in action in France No
vember 18, his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Arlo McKinley of east of Kenton,
were notified. Previously be had
been retported as missing in action.
Sergt. McKinley entered service
Feb. 7,1942, and had been overseas
since August.
Staff Sergt. Ernest Kennedy, 26,
of Ridgeway, was killed in action in
France Nov. 15, the War Depart

To Open Youth Center
At Ottawa
The youth center being set up in
the former Masonic temple at Ot
tawa may be open in time for the
Christmas holiday period it was
learned from officials in charge.
Freak Calf Born
A male calf with five legs and six
feet is attracting much attention at
the Henry Inkrott farm three and
one-half miles west of Leipsic. The
animal is of Brown Swiss and Guern
sey ancestry. The fifth leg extends
from the right shoulder and has
two perfectly formed feet on it. At
last reports the freak animal was
thriving and many friends and
neighbors have called to see the
five-legged calf.
$15,000 Awarded By
Court In Ottawa
A Putnam county grand jury re
turned a verdict in favor of the
plaintiff at Ottawa in the alienation
of affections suit of Lenore Harris
vs. Hugh Harris, Eva Harris and
Pauline Japel. The jury voted elev
en to one to award the plaintiff
$15,000. Mrs. Lenore Harris asked
for $50,000.
The counsel for the defendants in
dicated that a motion for a new trial
would be made before the expiration
of the three-day period allowed by
law for such action.
Pandora Soldier Killed
In Action
Melvin M. Hilty, Jr., 20, serving
with the 90th Division of General
Patton’s army, was killed in action
Thursday, Nov. 9, in France, ac
cording to a telegram sent by the
adjutant general and received by
his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin
Hilty of Pandora.
Leipsic Man’s Corn
Harvested By Good
Neighbors
The old saying, “a friend in need
is a friend indeed”, was clearly dem
onstrated at Leipsic when friends
and neighbors numbering 35 gather
ed with tractors, teams, corn huskers
(including the old-fashioned husk
ing-peg), corn pickers, shovels, forks
and various other implements at the
country home of Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Hummon, one mile east of
Leipsic. They came for the purpose
of completing the harvesting of the
corn crop which had been started by
Mr. Hummon before his confinement
in the Findlay hospital as a result
of a broken leg and pelvic bone due
to a fall from the hay mow in his
barn on the evening of Nov. 5. The
day’s work consisted of “picking”
over 13 acres of heavy corn and
shredding and cribbing 1,000 bushels.
Putnam Contest Won
By Pandora Girl
Marilyn Steiner, of Pandora, will
represent Putnam county in the
Fifth Congressional Prince of Peace
contest later this month.
Miss Steiner won the Putnam
County Prince of Peace contest held
in the Trinity Methodist church at
Pandora and received a silver medal
in addition to a place in the district
contest.
Acid Burns Student
Public Sale
Don Heitzman, 14-year-old son of
Mr. and Mrs. Harle Heitzman, of
Cloverdale, sustained painful facial
burns when sulphuric used in test
ing milk was accidentally spilled in
the agricultural class room at Con
tinental-Palmer rural school at Con
tinental. The accident happened
when Heitzman slipped in class and
the bottle of acid he was lifting to a
shelf fell to the floor.
