Jenkins who overruled a motion for a new trial. Lusk was convicted by a jury of the fatal beating of his wife. Train Crash Injures 3 Three persons were injured, one seriously, as the result of a train auto collision at the Erie railroad crossing in Lima. The injured included the motorist whose automobile was struck, the crossing watchman and a pedestrian. Cincinnati and Lake Erie bus schedules have conformed to fast time regulations, an official ex plained. The Allen county court house and its “town clock” will re main on slow time. County officials explain that state regulations require county offices to operate on Eastern Standard. The change will be a matter of convenience for train travelers who will find railroad time and the new time coordinated for the first time since last summer. Railroad clocks have remained on the fast time basis thruout the year. Driver Goes To Bed After Viewing Wreck While state highway patrolmen searched in the wreckage of an auto mobile for a body, Don Keeney, 18, of near Bloomdale, driver of the car, was asleep in the home of a friend in North Baltimore. The youth reported he jumped from the car before it was struck by a New York Central freight train northeast of Findlay and dragged 1000 feet. He said he looked at the demol ished car and then hiked for a friend’s home. One freight car was derailed, blocking an intersection with the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and tying up travel on that road for two hours. Choir Misses Concert After traveling 1,800 miles through 10 states without difficulty, the Luth eran Bible School choir was detained by four blowouts enroute to Findlay, and arrived too late to give a sched uled concert. Name Findlay Man As OPA Advisor Five Ohio manufacturers, includ ing Paul B. Cochran, Findlay, have been appointed to an OPA advisory committee for the construction ma chinery manufacturers’ industry. Mr. Cochran is associated with the Buckeye Traction Ditcher Co. Duttweiler Files For Renomination Mayor Cloyce H. Duttweiler filed his petition with the Hancock county board of elections as candi date for Republican renomination for fourth term. Faced Starvation In Nazi Sweat Box “It’s the omissions of the Germans, rather than the commissions, which make up the atrocities inflicted upon American prisoners”, Capt. Homer Hammond said at Findlay. Captain Hammond told of a “sweat box” in which he spent eight days while being held for questioning, of a starvation diet of sauerkraut soup, and of unheated barracks in sub-zero weather. He said he would have starved except for weekly supplies provided by the Red Cross. The officer is home on a 60-day leave after spending 10 weeks in a prison camp near Shubin, Poland. He related that when the Russians BLUFFTON NEWS, BLUFFTON, OHIO pushed across the Vistula in mid January, the Germans evacuated their prisoners, and that during the march, he and three other officers escaped. They spent one night in a hay stack, when the thermometer in a nearby Village recorded 30 degrees below zero, and al! of the Red Cross supplies they had brought with them except the powdered milk, froze. They were finally sheltered and aided in reaching Russian lines by a Polish farmer and his family. Captain Hammond attributed his capture to a violation of a flag of truce which he volunteered to carry into a city which the Germans were defending. HARDIN COUNTY Kenton Fire Destroys Over Ton Of Pork More than a ton of pork in the process of being cured,' worth some 20,000 red points to consumers, was destroyed recently when fire raged through a smoke house at the Crys tal Ice and Cold Storage company at Kenton. Manager Ralph E. Yauger said the fire started when a ham dropped into the fire. The meat valued at $600 was being cured for farmers, he said. Ada Man Killed On Luzon Pfc. Ralph Mankey, 22, previously reported missing in Luzon on Feb. 1, was killed in action on that date, the War department has informed his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John M. Man key, east of Ada. Pfc. Mankey was serving with a cavalry unit at the time of his death. Commend Kenton On Financial Status The research department of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce made public a report commending Kenton for the condition of its finances. “The city has practically no bond ed indebtedness. On the ■whole, it can be said that Kenton rests in an enviable financial position”, the re port declared. It warned against permitting officials to launch into “impractical and expensive” projects. Suspect Kenton Gang Kenton police investigated the sixth burglary in 10 days and said they suspect a youthful local gang. Paul Hathaway, grocer, reported merchandise valued at $75 was stolen from his store. Previously, four bulk filling stations had been burglarized, one of them twice. Farmer Injured In Tractor Accident Melvin Scott, 26, was reported in a serious condition in a Lima hos pital after sustaining severe injuries at his farm when the tractor he was operating went out of control as he was plowing around a stump. It was reported that the tractor and a wheel of the plow passed over his body. Faces Concealed Weapons Charge Charged with carrying concealed weapons, a man who gave his name as Orbin Hensley of near Lima is being held in the Hardin county jail awaiting grand jury action. SMITH Probate Judge (Unifad Nation* Pkofo) PUTNAM COUNTY Infant Drowns In Catch Basin Funeral services for Larry Dean Bidlack, 15-month-old son of Ford and Lois Bidlack, who met death by drowning were held at Col. Grove. The child fell into an open catch basin on the parents’ farm at the edge of Continental. The mother, who was milking, missed her son and started searching for him. He was found at 6:15 o’clock after a frantic half-hour search. Besides his parents he is survived by a sister, Janet and a brother, Walter. Putnam War Prisoners Home On Furloughs T/5 Harold Potts, who was a pris oner of war for eight months in Germany, is spending a 60-day fur lough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Potts, at Kalida. He was lib erated by the Russions January 31. Carl Missler, Ottawa, is at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Missler, after being held a prisoner of the Japanese since Jan uary 3, 1942. He had been a civil service employe in the Philippines. Barn Burns Struck By Lightning A small barn on the Walter Grun den farm north of Gilboa was struck by lightning Thursday morning and burned to the ground. The Gilboa volunteer fire department answered a call but found the blaze out of con trol. Mr. Grunder said all livestock was on pasture but said a few chickens were burned. He was un able to estimate his loss but said he carried insurance on the building. Wind carried sparks and embers away from other farm buildings. Putnam Brothers Are Given Sentences Two of three brothers taken before Judge William George in the Putnam county juvenile court on charges of breaking and entering were sentenced to the Boys’ Industrial school at Lan caster. Ranging in age from 11 to 14, the brothers were arrested by Sheriff Arnold Potts on charges of forcing entry into the Bryan Reynolds mark et in Fort Jennings. They took $10 in cash, the sheriff said. The older pair was sentenced to the reformatory while the youngest was placed on probation. The two were taken to Lancaster Monday. Wil liamson spent Wednesday of last week with Mrs. Emmeline Nonna maker and Mrs. Lendon Basinger and son Gareth.
