Auto Kills Lima Sailor Lawrence Cyril Wagner, 20, Lima, in the navy submarine service, was killed when the car he was driving crashed into a cement abutment in State Route 65, two n^Jes south of Columbus Grove. Wagner was en route home after a visit in Ottawa, and his car failed to negotiate a curve in the highway, investigating authorities reported. He arrived home last week on a leave after service in Australia, Manila and the Philippines. Plan New Athletic Field At Delphos Rental of 25 acres of farm land owned by the city at the sewage disposal plant was halted when coun cil went on record to reject all bids for cash rental of the ground after Bruce Reed and Leo Odenweller, of the city recreation board, and mem bers of the Chamber of Commerce asked that the ground be set aside for recreational purposes in a plan to expand recreation at the municipal stadium and swimming pool within the next few years. HANCOCK COUNTY Buckeye Ditcher Plant Is Sold Consummation of the purchase of the Buckeye Traction Ditcher Co. at Findlay by Gar Wood Industries, Inc., Detroit, was announced by Glen A. Bassett, president of Gar Wood firm. Some of the products now manu factured by Gar Wood in Detroit will be shifted to Findlay. The Gar Wood firm is one of the largest manufacturers of truck and tractor mounted winches and cranes. Miracle Claimant Pays Visit To Findlay Miss Ninabelle Cross, the 38-year old former teacher who claims she was cured by a miracle after being bedfast 16 Ms years, said she will at tempt replies to letters from hund reds of invalids who have asked how they also may be cured through faith. With the assistance of the Rev. Ray M. Dibble, Methodist pastor at Upper Sandusky, Miss Cross said she is preparing a letter which will be mimeographed and sent to the invalids. Miss Cross is in Findlay for a visit of several days with her sister, Mrs. Irma Loveridge, and members of her family said they hoped she would get needed rest there from the scores of daily visitors from Ohio and other states who have call ed at her home since her recovery. Members of the family said Miss Cross has insisted on greeting each visitor personally, although many come at night. Beet Plant Opens The Findlay plant of the Great Lakes Sugar Co. began operations, B. J. Paschal, superintendent of operations, announced. He said 85,000 tons of sugar beets will be processed into some 25,000,000 pounds of sugar by Jan. 1. Paschal said $200,000 worth of equipment was installed this summer in the Findlay plant. Onion Passing Out As Scioto Muckland’s Greatest Crop The onion, for which the great Scioto marshlands in western Hardin County known throughout the mid dlewest is slowly giving up its rights in the muckland to the potato, hybrid corn and peppermint. This year as the onion harvest draws to a close, an estimated crop of 500 acres will yield approximate ly 150,000 bushels of onions, far from the 2,000,000-bushel yield of 20 years ago when as many as 5,500 acres were planted out of the 16,000 acres of muckland. The average yield this year will be about 300 bushels to the acre. In the period from 1905 to 1915, when the onion reigned supreme on the marsh, a yield of 1,000 bushels to the acre was not unusual and 600 to 700 bushels was average. Ada Sailor Still At War With Japs And Nazis Richard E. Baker, fireman first class, Ada, is still technically at war with both Germany and Japan. He had the believe-it-or-not experience of missing both V-E and V-J Days. His attack transport, the USS Pickaway was westbound in mid Pacific when Germany surrendered. On May 8 he was crossing the In ternational dateline, and V-E Day was skipped. Then on Sept. 2, the day the Japs signed in Tokyo Bay, the Pickaway again was crossing the dateline and V-J Day was missed. The story of scrambled holidays is an old one for the men of the Pick away. In the course of 50,000 miles of Pacific travel this year, they missed the Fourth of July as well, but enjoyed two Easters. Dick is dubiously looking toward Thanksgiv ing and Christmas. PUTNAM COUNTY Putnam Feeders To Get Subsidy A subsidy of 50 cents per hundred weight will be paid all beef growers who have sold their animals weigh ing 800 pounds or more for $14.55 per 100 pounds or over, it was re ported by A. Sells Greenhouse Enter Ministry Planning to enter the ministry, Daniel Grisso of Ottawa announced that he has sold his greenhouse business on East Main street to Richard E. Cavanaugh of Cleveland who has taken immediate possession. Sugar Refinery Starts Work At Ottawa Full operation of the Buckeye Sugar company refinery at Ottawa is in progress as the 1945 crop of sugar beets kept rolling into the yards. Ralph Dush, plant manager, said he expects the season to extend about 60 days or until shortly be fore Christmas. Contracts Polio Mr. and Mrs. Virgil McDaniM were grieved to receive word that their son, Captain Meredith Mc Daniel, is seriously ill with infantile paralysis in South Carolina. Mr. and Mrs. McDaniel accompanied by their son and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Gwendolyn McDaniel of Gilboa, left at once to be at their son’s bedside. A course to train personnel for po sitions in Ohio’s dairy cattle artificial insemination association will be given at Ohio State University, Oct. 22-27. The three Christian Endeavor groups of the Ebenezer Mennonite church enjoyed a wiener roast in the grove near the Ezra Bucher home last Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Lysle Cahill and dau ghter Lynne of Cleveland spent the week end with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Orlo Marshall of this place and Mr. and Mrs. Carl Cahill of Bluffton. The annual luncheon meeting of the Federated Farm Women’s clubs of Allen county will be held in the Chris tian church in Harrod, Thursday, No vember 1st. The Friendly Neighbors club and the Profit and Pleasure club of this community plan to send dele gates to the meeting. Pfc. Herbert Marshall, Jr., who is stationed in Texas is spending a thir ty day furlough with his wife and son Alan and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Marshall. S. who attended the party for members of the Eighth District O. E. S. held in Paulding last Thursday evening. Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Schoonover of near Battle Creek, Mich., took dinner Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. .C. Campbell and daughters, Mrs. Delmer Reagan of Dayton and Miss Elizabeth Campbell of Los Angeles, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Walters of Brice spent Tuesday with Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Begg. They were ac companied here by Mrs. Emma Leidy also of Brice who is spending the week in the Begg home. Glen Mayberry was injured last Thursday evening when a barn door fell on his ankle. At this writing the exact nature of his injury has not been determined, whether the bones are broken or torn ligaments or both. Mrs. Orlo Marshall was a Thursday guest of Mrs. S. E. Lewis in Lima and attended the Northwest District meet ing of Federated clubs and the lunch eon held in *the Trinity Methodist church. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Marshall were in Cleveland the first of the week where Mrs. Marshall spent a day at the Cleveland Clinic for a check up. Mr. and Mrs. Lysle Cahill and dau ghter Lynne of Cleveland, Mr. and Mrs. Orlo Marshall and Mrs. Eli Hartman were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Cahill. Mr. and Mrs. Allen McCluer and daughter Donna Mae were afternoon guests. Pandora Mrs. Mertie Reese and Miss Harrit Krohn have been visiting at the Dr. Waldo Sutter home at Waterville the past ten days. Dick Hilty was elected president of the school band with James Diller vice-president Maurice Schutz, sec retary-treasurer Roy Schutz and Richard Boehr, librarians. Dwight Probst, assistant Scout master of Pandora troop 26 recently was honored by receiving the award of Eagle Scout rank. Probst was the fourth Pandora Scout awarded this rank. Vincent P. McClintock, recently discharged from the army, is now teaching school at Wayne.
