THURSDAY, AUG. 1, 1946 PeMantil July taking its final curtain call— a month marking Independence day —and the rodeo and running June a close race as month of brides and here’s August with dog days and it’s the last month of the official slacks season and swimming at the Buckeye and bathing suits and vacation gave some of the boys a sobering thot— a frost in six weeks wouldn’t be too good for the corn crop which is hit ting its stride after a handicapped start and gasoline prices chalk ing up a one cent raise and if your memory is good you may recall when a dime would buy a hamburger the nickel ice cream cone, stand by of the kiddies, is about all that’s left of the lower wartime prices the brilliant display of northern lights last Friday night was the most spectacular in recent years and kept many Bluffton people up until long after midnight. And speaking of wartime prices, one local dealer said the other day that some of the loudest squawks If the line’s busy About 150 bak bushels 2 year old hens about 4 tons Lawre Clyde Warren, At Our C-KA Growth ing If the line’s busy, it’s worth trying again to tell us to have our handy truck stop at your farm to pick up your Cream, Eg^ and Poultry We save you nu»r£y, fuss, muss and worry—our truck hauls produ**e for lots of farmers in one load— that’s why wej«(n hai|l it for less than it costs you to haul it yourself. Glad to see Bluffton’s band making an appearance last Saturday night in conection with the ice cream social for high school band suits benefit. Some 30 members directed by Bill Holtkamp ranging from teen age youngsters to ex-service men— and Ralph Stearns, veteran drummer heading the percussion section. The big crowd enjoyed it immensely— hope we can have more concerts this summer. Looks like a long way off—Nov ember 23, but we overheard some of the barbershop crowd saying that the forehanded boys had already sent in their orders for reservations for the Ohio State-Michigan football game at Columbus on that date and that tickets already are hard to get. If you ever go to Texas and ex pect to enjoy a long and happy life, don’t make disparaging remarks about Texas jackrabbits, says Harold Wenger, former Blufftonite now liv ing in Houston. The Bluffton Milling Co. ally nervous trigger fingers which get more itchy when some ill-advised visitor rashly declares that there are jackrabbits larger than those grown in Texas. Just to prove his point, Wenger sends a clipping from a Houston newspaper recounting some of the prize tall tales about the famed Texas jackrabbits whether there are facts to support the stories or not. Take, for example around El Paso where some of tbe native Texans will solemnly aver that jackrabbits there are so large they are often mistaken for antelope and two of them will feed 150 guests at a barbecue. Ranchmen say the rabbits are chasing their livestock. At another place it is proposed to solve the shortage of beef and pork by substituting jackrabbit meat and keep three packing plants run ning full blast—anyway so say the Texans and we are not the one to dispute the six-shooter boys. A letter received Monday by the Ralph Badertscher family of South Jackson street, written in a strange language has aroused considerable speculation as to its contents. The envelope bears a Finnish stamp and the letter consisting of several pages, is believed to be an expres sion of gratitude for a box sent last October by the Badertschers for central European war relief. A Gilboa crew, the Hindall Steinman Hardware company outfit, is busy at the Bluffton Stone company these days keeping two drilling machines busy sinking blast holes. The machines operate 12 feet back from the edge of the quarry and drill holes 14 feet apart and 28 feet deep. They sink between 5,000 and 6,000 feet a year at the quarry here. The Hindall-Steinman outfit also operates a general hardware and appliance store at Gilboa. Mem bers of the crew working here are O. J. Hindall and son Jack and Lawrence McCullough and son David. Rt W’e can’t reveal identities, but there is a merchant who will vouch for the fact that women definitely prefer daintily scented wearables. To prove his point he displayed two identical boxes of women’s wear, one scented and the other not. More than 90 per cent of the women shop pers made their purchases from the scented box, commenting that the merchandise was of finer texture and better quality. Another addition to the Half Century club of Bluffton News sub scribers is Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Gratz of Allen, Mich., former residents here, who have taken the News for more than 50 years and comes a renewal from Mrs. Chas. Tenney of Akron, saying the News is a welcome visitor. Mrs. Tenney is a daughter of Mrs. Eph Geiger of this place. i And speaking of old timers, there’s Norbet Highland, Buffalo architect, who was in Bluffton looking up friends the first of the week. He specializes in designing residences for building contractors and has a widespread clientele extending from the east coast to Colorado. As a youngster he was an expert in fly ing kites and is said to have formu lated some early plans in pioneer ing of the present day helicopter. His father, David Highland, employ ed in the oil field here some 50 years ago lives in Maywood, Calif., with his sister, Mrs. Florence High land Murphy. Dr. Weldon Diller of Rawson, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Diller of Jackson street, who recently return ed from the Army to resume his medical practice will be at Cedar Point next week playing in the National Checker Tournament. Dr. Diller, like his father, is a checker enthusiast and his ability in that field was evidenced last week when he was able to get a draw from Newell Banks, world’s blindfold checker champion in a match at Findlay. Dr. Diller was one of four opponents taken on simultaneously by Banks who played blindfolded. In the four games Banks won two and played two t© a draw. Spots on the checkerboard were numbered and “moves” of his opponents were called by numbers and Banks, speak ing in numbers directed the “moves” of his pieces as readily as if he could see the board. Another former Blufftonite, Gene Zuber, now superintendent of Whar ton schools, erstwhile state checker champion was the only one to deefat Banks when the latter took on ten opponents simultaneously in straight checkers, moving from one board to another, sizing up the situations and moving his own men. One lady recently took RHU-AID three days and said afterward that she never would have believed such a “wonder medicine” existed, says she couldn’t raise her left arm more than a fw inches. Rheumatic pains afflicted the muscles of her shoulder and arm. She could hardly move the fingers on her left hand. Now this lady’s rheumatic pains are gone since she got RHU-AID and she says she can use her left arm as well as her right, in fact, she says she simply blesses the day she got this medicine and she feels like an altogether different woman.
