THURSDAY, JAN. 23, 1947 PeM&ncd Winter here with all the trappings winds blowing a gale and temp eratures near zero plumbers busy thawing out frozen pipes and the usual crop of stranded motorists with dead batteries crowding parages the younger set taking the situation in their stride and skating on the Buckeye custom butch ering on farms in full swing—wish someone would bring us some good country sausage and twenty years ago ice harvest would have been a major project with Charlie Hankish and Bigler’s filling their storage houses for next summer— nowadays all that’s necessary is to flip a switch and there’s ice when ever it’s wanted times change— just like the institute—and by the way Bluffton put out the welcome mat for rural folk attending the in stitute Wednesday and ,Thursday remember when it used to be the farmers institute—now it’s the community institute for everybody— and you’re invited to attend the get better acquainted with your neighbors and farming has changed, too—tractors and electric ity do the work—some farms don’t even have a single horse and congratulations to Councilman Cleon Triplett who birthdayed Monday.... Filling stations here are serving as a convenient location for house trailers this winter. Besides those mentioned in this column' last week, two employees at the electric gen erating plant of the Central Ohio Light & Power company have re-1 cently moved their families here and are living this winter in house trail ers at the North Main street filling station operated by Paul Henry. She couldn’t move her arm up or down because her muscles were stiff with rheumatic pains and the joints of her elbow and shoulder were sw’ollen. Despite appeals to motorists for several years past parking con tinued on the grounds until the school board ordered posts along the Jackson street front which were put in by Lee Coon and his men. Edgar Conaway, North Main street filling station operator has a profit able hobby, raising dachshund pup pies at his home on West Elm street. A litter of five of the little fellows recently brought him $200. Most of them were sold to Toledo purchasers. Ed says dachshunds are even-temper ed, make good playmates for child ren and have no “doggy” odor. Hockey is the latest topic of dis cussion among Bluffton sports fans since 22 of them saw the game at Cleveland last Saturday night. For many of the locals it was their first glimpse of professional hockey and in the particular American league attraction the Indianapollb Caps bested the Cleveland Barons 7 to 4. The Bluffton delegation was part of a crowd of 500 which made the Cleveland trip on the Nickel Plate railroad’s “Hockey Special” sponsor ed by the Findlay Lions club. The train left here shortly before 4 p. m. Saturday and returned early Sunday morning. Profits realized by the Findlay sponsors are used to correct cross-eyes in children. If you get down Florida-way this winter stop at Leesburg and see the Chris Amstutzs—they say they don’t run a hotel, but are always glad to greet friends. Some of the Bluffton folks who have stopped there this winter are the Ross Bogarts, Mel Bogarts, Will Steiners, Elmer Lau bys. Also the Dave Lugibills from Pandora and P. K. Hackenberger, a nephew and his family from Lima. Their son May Amstutz and family of Buffalo, also were down this winter. An the Dennis Brauens who moved from the Bluffton area several weeks ago and are just getting settled in the Rio Grande valley at McAllen, Texas, have already had some Bluff ton visitors Harold Montgomery and Leland (Jim) Sechler also Ira Stettler, the George Hubers and Jess Thompsons. And getting acquainted in that region the Brauens stopped in to see the Otto Kidds formerly of near Bluffton now living near McAllen and the Henry Steiners who moved there from Lima. Greetings come from the J. C. Weltys, one-time Bluffton residents, later living in Minneapolis and now retired and living in Phoenix, Ari zona and the J. V. Mrs. Conner was former ly Zoa Vickers. Ed Altman, who has been visiting his sister Mrs. Barbara Light, is in the Bluffton hospital with a stomach ailment. A large veterans camp is being completed across from Riverside Park Pool. This will help the housing shortage in Findlay. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Smith and Laura Tyson of Rawson visited over the week end with Mrs. Ethel Roberts at Green Castle, Ind., and her daugh ter, Marian Roberts in Indianapolis, ■where she is superintendent of nurs es. Mrs. Chester Huber called on Mrs. Gene Smith in Rawson, Thursday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman of Findlay were in Bluffton Saturday evening. They formerly lived in Rawson. The youth choir of the Rawson Methodist church held a pot luck supper and gave a program at the Evangelical United Brethren church. The choir is under the direction of Mrs. Gene Smith. Mrs. Chester Huber was enter tained Friday at a dinner in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ruel Suter in the afternoon Mrs. Huber and Mrs. Suter called on Mrs. Grover David son, in Pandora. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Harris, north of Mt. Cory, are the proud parents of a daughter born at 7:30 p. m. Tuesday in the Bluffton Community hospital, weighing 6 pounds and thirteen ounces. LaFayette Mrs. Eva Sherrick and Mrs. May Ward of Lima and Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Robinson were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Hed ges. W. S. C. Rice and sons attended the funeral of the former’s nephew at Sherwood, Ohio, Satur day. He was a victim of a plane crash at Dayton.
