The 66-point to tal was topped during the season by the Bluffton team only four times, altho the Pirates on three other oc casions made 6 to match the Monday evening scoring splurge. All five Bluffton regulars contrib uted satisfactorily toward the scor ing total of the evening. Neil Schmidt, as usual, set the pace with 19 points even though he failed to connect from the field until the sec ond quarter. Jim Howe racked up 12 points Wayne Sommer contributed 10 and Althaus and Kirtland each came through with eight, for one of the best team exhibitions the Pirates have put on all year. Little is known of the comparative strength of the two out- Never before in history has any Bluffton High cage team entered tournament play with as much pre tourney fanfare as that accorded this year’s outfit, which ended its regular season undefeated Newspapers all over the state have been writing up the spectacular seasonal success of the outfit, and pointing to the school’s unique record of having been represented in the state tournament more times than any other Ohio Class outfit Six times Bluffton teams have been in state tournament competi tion, and backers of this year’s out fit are hopeful the Pirates will make their seventh championship bid this season On one previous occasion the Pirates got to the finals before being eliminated, 28 to 26, and an other time they were beaten out in the semi-finals Bluffton’s last shot at the state title was in 1942, and the school’s first bid for the championship was away back in 1923, the first year the Ohio High School Athletic as sociation controlled “A” and “B” tournaments One of the school’s finest teams never saw the state tournament, after rolling to 16 straight wins in the season, and av eraging better than 80 points a game When Center Fred Herr mann was lost to the Army, how ever, the 1944 Pirates were stopped by Lima St. Johns in the sectional tournament, and the Lima team e ventually went to the state finals be fore bowing out In their first state tourney bid in 1923, the Pirates lost to Wellsville, 17 to 12, and Wellsville afterward Bluffton College Cagers To Play Two Games Here In Next Week Sports in Shorts Come and see the International Cooler now. New Wildlife Development Program Adopted Ohio’s wildlife population and fu ture hunting prospects were given a shot-in-the-ann treatment last week when the Conservation Commission approved the adoption of a stream lined program to be known as the “Ohio Wildlife Development Project’’ a,s outlined and recommended by Dr. E. D. Martin, Chief of the Division of Conservation Gaine Management and Propagation Section. The Commission authorized the expenditure of $125, 000 to get the program under way immediately, which involves acquir ing and restoring winter nesting grounds and food areas for wildlife. Dr. Martin’s recommendations, re quested by the Commission at its January meeting, includes a wide range of natural wildlife needs but basically calls for the leasing of strips of land throughout the state from farmers and landowners for estab lishing wildlife food and cover refug es. The Division will pay the farmer at a rate comparable to the actual crop value of each area. “Such a program of paying farm ers for such areas.” he explained, naturally requires a lot of money for fits, for an earlier scheduled contest with Tri-State at Angola had to be postponed because of winter weather. In an early-season meeting be tween Bluffton and Cedarville at that place, the downstaters took Bluff ton’s measure by a margin of only a few points, and the Beavers are anxious to avenge that setback in next Monday’s game here. Akron will play the Burckymen at that place as one of the features of a double-header basketball presenta tion, similar to those put on by Bowling Green university, in which the home squad tangles with two visiting teams.
