THURSDAY, AUG. 21, 1947 Some of them said it wasn’t the heat—it was the .humidity that we felt the first of the week we were too fagged out to argue— anyway a rose by a different name would smell as sweetly—or wouldn’t it—and whether you call it heat or humidity can’t make much difference as far as we’re concerned and those anxious sisters who thot there wouldn’t be any more summers are speechless and it’s been a big boost to the corn crop—some of the boys say you can almost hear it grow—fact is we heard the other day from a farmer who is usually pretty accurate on long range fore casts that the com crop around here For Vigor and Health- include meat in your menu. Fresh and Salt Meats U hES MURE© V V (Mohair Covering) will be just about normal, after all .. and that big rain last Thursday night followed by scattered showers gave gardens and lawns a new start and speaking of starts we wonder where all these horse flies come from—never saw so many— and they say there are four new kinds of mosquitoes and grasshop pers are on the upswung and the first diesel locomotive to go thru Bluffton was seen here Sunday afternoon on the Nickel Plate tracks —wonder what some of the oldtimers in the days of woodburning engines would have thot and now with oil as fuel we might like to be a fireman and these starlit nights you can spot the rising of Sirius, the dog star, which is a sign that fall’s near—as the katydids are pro claiming nightly only 10 days until Labor day—if you expect to snatch a day’s outing you’ll have to hurry and speaking of outings a lot of fans drove over to Canton last Friday night when Schmidt was a headline attraction but when it comes to outings, remember those oldtime excursions to Cedar Point when the L. Paul Cramers back from a 3,750 mile auto trip to Yellowstone —the 75th anniversary of the big national park and they report every thing crowded and if you want to put up for the night in a tourist camp better figure on stopping about 4 o’clock in the afternoon or you may be out of luck ... all kinds of weather—they saw a snow storm in the mountains nearby while in Yel lowstone—and ran into 105-degree heat in Nebraska and a garage mechanic who was associated with Buffalo Bill regaled the Bluffton minister with tales of the old west while working on his car in Cody, Wyoming. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Haller and Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Clever returned Sunday from a 1,654 mile trip thru Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. Highlights of the trip included a 65 mile boat cruise to Mackinac is land and Les Cheneaux islands, the locks at Sault Ste Marie and a boat trip on the Wisconsin river thru the scenic Wisconsin Dells. While in the latter region they attended the Stand Rock Indian ceremonial dances by the Winnebago Indians. They also visited Mr. Clever’s uncle and grand father in Oshkosh, Wis. Mrs. Elvira Sutter Perry, who was killed in an automobile accident in New Mexico last week was a favor ite with Bluffton audiences some 35 years ago when she played juvenile parts in home talent productions. Perhaps the most noteworthy of these was “Tags the Waif” an old time melodrama in which she had WILL TAKE PART III STATE FAIR DAMCE REVl'E “The Foursome” pictured above will be featured in the Stella Becker Dance Revue which will be a daily attraction of Music Hall at The Ohio State Fair which will be held in Columbus August 23 to 29. All of the youngsters appearing in the Revue have had several years of experience on the stage. THE BLUFFTON NEWS, BLUFFTON, OHIO Biff the lead. It was staged in the town hall, now occupied by the Legion post. Mrs. Perry was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. J. Sutter now of Lima. Her father was a Bluffton physician at the time. Folks along the way looked twice the other day—just to be sure that what they saw was Ed Conaway of the Sohio service station driving the Paul Diller ambulance with siren open on a hurry-up run to Beaver dam. It all happened when a call came for the ambulance with no regular driver immediately available —so Conaway who services the car volunteered for the trip, taking along his son Tom as assistant and making the run in jig-time with no untoward incidents. The John Garlingers who picked ten gallon of raspberries growing wild last month have duplicated the feat with blackberries, getting an other good ten gallons in thickets near town. John who is a versatile fellow can lay claim to berry pick ing championship to add to his other accomplishments. A little girt who attended the first Sunday school opened by Miss Alice Ludwig, home missionary, in a West Virginia mining camp some 25 years ago spent the week end here with her former teacher. She is Miss Mary Kelly of Princeton, W. Va., now’ an instructor in the teacher training school of Concord university at nearby Athens, W. Va. Niswander teaching in the public schools at Bluefield, W. Va. The two stopped here enroute home from a summer trip to the Pacific coast. Coach A. C. Burcky at the Canton football classic last Friday night ran onto Bert Ingwerson, University of Illinois line coach, an old friend and former college associate. The Illin ois coach said that Schmidt, Bluffton high school football luminary last year was an outstanding performer as did line coach Ernie Godfrey of Ohio State. Reports are that Schmidt is headed for 0. S. U. this fall. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Green and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Yant are enjoy ing a two weeks’ vacation at Yellow stone National Park. The members of the Vesperian S. S. class held their class meeting on Thursday evening at the Methodist church basement. Mr .and Mrs. G. T. Arnold spent last week at Indian River, Mich. Bernard Gratz is spending the week with Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Younkman and family at Clyde. Mr. and Mrs. John Foor of Gran ville are spending the week with Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Kramer.
