In the meantime, how’ever, the pur suit of the title is growing more dif ficult, for barring upsets St. Marys should cop the championship with an unblemished record. Bluffton college cagers will meet two strong foes, but the Beavers are traveling at their best clip of the year, and have high hopes of revers ing early season defeats suffered at the hands of Defiance and Wilber- force State. The Yellow Jackets came from be hind in the last minute to trip up Bluffton at Defiance, and the Beavers will be after revenge this week. Bluff ton also played excellent ball at Wil berforce three weeks ago, and al though the negro outfit was undefeat ed at that time the Beavers handed them a real scare before succumbing. Beaverdam Will Blay Two At Home Beaverdam High cagers will play the last two games of their regular season schedule in the Beaverdam gymnasium on Friday, Feb. 6, and Tuesday, Feb. 10, each tilt being an Allen county league assignment. Indians Amstutz ......................... 4 2 10 Independent League GAMES JAN. 28 Sportsmen Win The Bluffton Sportsmen cut loose with a barrage of field goals and foul shots to completely swamp th* Columbus Grove Merchants 73-30 in the first game of league play last Wednesday evening. The Sportsmen, after trailing for more than a quarter, suddenly came to life as Everett, Pogue, and Hilty started the scoring spree. The above trio tallied 51 points with Everett’s 22 being high. Columbus Grove obviously missed their stellar forward Tudor who has been their leading scorer so far. Schroeder and Hunt contributed 10 and 8 in his absence to take scor ing honors for Grove. Pandora Tops Cory Pandora Milling Co. toppled their arch rivals, Mt. Cory, from the league leadership with a neat 40-35 win. Pandora surged back to close Mt. Cory’s lead to 13-12 at halftime and after going ahead in the second half successfully staved off Mt. Cory’s efforts. Etter garnered 11 points before fouling out followed closely by Bob Gratz with 10 and Bob Reese with 9. Bob King and Dave Anderson scored 14 and 8 for Mt. Cory. Volleyball and basketball are the main attraction for men and women, who participate in the two Tuesday sessions. Saturday forenoon activity for grade school children at the high school gymnasium, find this week’s program for girls. The winter recreation program will be closed in three weeks. Sportsman for first place winning handily over Lafayette 56-23. Leading all the way, the Dunbricks used their height and speed to advantage in posting their second win of this round. Coming from behind in the last minute, the Beavers tripped up Cedarville, 60 to 59, at that place last Wednesday night to remain un defeated in Ohio-Indiana collegiate league play. Ohio Northern, on the other hand, reversed the tables and overcame a one-point Bluffton lead in the last 25 seconds to go home with a 51 to 50 victory in a thriller played on the local court. Bluffton’s battle with Northern, one of the school’s oldest foes, was bitterly fought all the way. The Beavers started slowly, and trailed 6 to 0, and again, 16 to 5, before their attack really began function ing. From that point, Bluffton spurted to take the advantage at halftime, 22 to 20, and at one point in the rally scored 13 points while holding the visitors scoreless. Then the Beavers clicked for 16 points while the Bears were scoreless, and appeared headed for certain victory, with a 43 to 33 lead with seven minutes remaining. At that point, however, the Beavers began missing shots that formerly had clicked and Northern pulled up steadily to tie the score at 46-all with two minutes to go. It was a wild finish from that point, with the lead changing hand five times, but Northern’s fielder in the 1ast 25 seconds clinched the victory for the Bears. Russ Gratz, back in college after a semester’s absence, banged 13 points through the nets to lead the Bluff ton attack, but he had able assist ance from Rich Gratz and Yoder, each of whom bagged 10, and Stahl, who got nine.
