There were arrests, repeated oc cupations of the land by each side, then in an attack by Ogden one Con necticut man was killed and several were wounded. It was a family matter—-the family of William Penn was impoverished and kept trying to recover the lands. Definitely repulsed and after his surrender, Ogden again was sent by the Penns to break up the settlement and in September, 1770, another battle occurred in which several Con necticut men were killed, many prisoners taken and the survivors fled to Connecticut, More War The next spring they were back, with Colonel Butler in command and war began in earnest. In January, 1774, Wyoming was included in Westmoreland County. Pennsylvania, and became a town— Wilkes-Barre. There now were 6,000 persons there. In 1775 the Penns had 700 men, with a field piece or two, attacked the Connecticut settlers but after a stiff battle Colonel Butler routed them. The settlers meantime incurred the enmity of the Tories by expelling some 40 of the British sympathizers from the settlement. Enmity against the Wyoming set tlers centered in the Penn family Sir William Johnson, British boss of the hired Indian allies his paramour, Mollie Brant, sister of Joseph Brant, head of the Six Nations Brant him self Col John “Indian” Butler, a relative of Zebulon Butler and the colorful half-breed, “Queen Esther,” Catherine Montour, daughter of a French governor of Canada, widow of an Indian chief and a seeress among the savages. William John son died and Sir John Johnson, a relative, assumed his share of the quarrel. 4th July Massacre On the Fouth of July, 1778, came the attack, battle and then the mas sacre. Led by “Indian” Butler and Queen Esther, 1,200 Indians, British, Tories and renegades battled the 300 Connecticut settlers—all the males left in it after the others had joined the army—and the extermination be gan. The attackers were wild. Persons were tomahawked right and left. Some fled and swam the river. Others were shot from the shore or tomahawked in the water. A few, promised quarter, were tomahawked as they climbed the bank. In the battle 160 old men and boys were killed and 140 escaped, most of them to later be captured and killed. One Tory killed his own brother. Men’s thigh bones were broken to keep them from escape and others were thrown on piles of blazing logs and held down with pitchforks until roasted alive. Sixteen were forced to kneel around what still is called “the bloody rock” and Queen Esther, singing a wild Indian song, danced around the circle tomahawking each one in turn. When night fell the savages strip ped the remaining captives, drove them back and forth through the flames and then thrust them into the embers with spears. Nearly 300 were killed and more than 150 widows and 600 orphans left. Up and down the valley the Indians swept, burning every cabin they found. Then came the 60-mile trek of the survivors to Stroudsburg, then on to Pittsburgh and, after the tract was reserved, into the Ohio Fire Lands. The Connecticut Western Reserve at first extended from the Delaware River, across Ohio and Indiana and, Connecticut believed, “to the Pacific Ocean.” Such is the tragic story behind Ohio’s 500,000-acre Fire Lands.
