OHIO By Harriett Burkhart Buried under the newest completed building on the Bluffton College campus are the College’s oldest tennis courts. These courts were made when the College was founded but falling into disuse when new courts were layed out, they later made a perfectly level, cleared site for the college library. Pig pens and a vegetable garden formerly put to practical use the low area planned as place for the new courts. A barn stood at the curb behind the present Music Hall site, the barnyard sloping down to Riley Creek where the college cow and pigs got water. The rest of this low ground supplied vegetables for the students’ tables. Vegetable Garden The three clay tennis courts which are located at the former vegetable garden site and are in present use were made when ground from the garden was used to fill in Ropp Hall terraces. Students stripped the top soil from the garden and the clay remaining was leveled for the tennis courts. The whole process was carried on under the guidance of H. W. Berky, who has supervised the making of all of Bluffton’s present tennis courts and who has coached tennis for many years. The dirt line where students stopped digging to fill in Ropp Hall terraces can still be seen today. Bluffton’s clay courts with their humble history according to visiting tennis teams are the best in this general vicinity. Campaign With tennis interest running high in 1926, three courts were no longer enough to accommodate the Bluffton College peak enrollment. It was then that six tennis courts were lay ed out back of Lincoln Hall. To finance this project, students cam paigned extensively for money writ ing letters, holding a tag day, and sponsoring basketball games. Then Prof. Berky and students completed the work on these six courts. For some years students made use of all nine Bluffton courts, enthusiasm running so high that in 1930 the tennis team won two games from Miami University. With interest gradually waning the courts behind Lincoln Hall fell into disuse. The weeds grew. One court was ruined when students dumped a load of gravel on it. Asphalt Revival of interest about four years ago however brought about th resurfacing of one court with asphalt. Bluffton now uses one asphalt court and three clay. Condi tion of the clay courts is poor, ac cording to Prof. Berky, tennis coach but work will be done on them and plans are under way to hold at Bluff ton an intercollegiate tennis confer ence.
