Allen County’s New
Taking Shape
Allen county’s 30th annual fair
will be held August 22, 23, 24, 25
and 26 on the new fairgrounds, one
mile east of Lima between High
ways 30-S and State Route 117.
After the county board -of com
missioners purchased the site last
winter and turned it over to the ag
ricultural society for operation of
the fair, planning for development
of the tract was started.
First work at the grounds was
the grading of 2,800 feet of road
way, with the first entrance being
cut off Route 30-S. A total of
2,200 feet of roadway remains to be
completed before opening of this
year’s fair.
So far 1,700 feet of six-inch water
line has been installed on the
grounds, with three fire hydrants at
tached to provide water for fire pro
tection. Electrical wiring and clear
ing of shrubs also has been com
pleted at the site.
While this work was being done,
the Lima Phillies baseball park was
constructed on the northwest corner
of the fairgrounds. This is in use
and will be used for night shows
during the August fair dates.
Two weeks ago, 20 acres of wheat
were combined on the grounds and
about 24 acres of oats are ready to
harvest. In addition to realizing a
profit from the grain, the society
has 1,035 bales of wheat straw to
be used for bedding.
Wayne Laibe, secretary-manager
of the fair, has arranged for the
construction of 3,600 feet of fence
around the grounds before the fair
opens late this month. Engineers
have surveyed the site and prepared
a contour map, in addition to laying
out the race track which will be
built later.
U. S. Soil Conservation officials
have set up a drainage plan for the

directors now are busy coordinating
their preparations which will cul

August.
During the last week about 6,000
premium books were distributed in
the county. Anyone interested in
obtaining a book is asked to contact
Laibe at the society office, 305 Co
lonial building, Lima.
