The Toll Of Time
Brilliant sunrises slither across to
melt into nothing on the edge of the
west days grow into years and to
centuries, their events, little and mo
mentus, lost to memory men live
and laugh, and labor and love—
giving freely or ripping a bit too
little off the bolt of calico and
weighing a thumb. Through it all
there is the big pronoun in capital
letters—“I” or its variant “ME.”
Some time a tall tombstone will
be bought and the choir will sing
“Only Remembered for What I Have
Done.” Monuments fall and crum
ble and man can become horribly
dead in a hundred years.—An in
signifant bit anyway as the column
grows long with the line not yet
drawn to add it up.
In 1839 and again just 100 years
ago antiquarians for the Smithson
ian Contributions to Knowledge dug
into the old prehistoric cemetery at
Madisonville, Hamilton County—now
a part of Cincinnati.
Find Pre-historic Relics
There 1,065 skeletons 700 ash
pits and more than 300 earthen
vases, bone implements and other
relics of horn, shell, copper and
stone were found. A lot of people
like us had been dead a long time-—
only the intervening years separat
ing them from our own certain ob
livion.
The ash pits were under a foot
or two of leaf fold after the clay
or hard pan had been removed.
Each was circular, three to four
feet across and four to seven feet
deep. Filled with layers of ashes
and some mixed with gravel, char
coal and sand, they contained small
bones of fishes, reptiles, birds and
mammals and large pieces of pot
tery.
There too, were many implements
made of bones of deer, and intact
antlers of elk. Most of the imple
ments were agricultural—for dig
ding and were large, well made and
effective

some kind of tally with markings.
Stone hammers were in some of the
pits.
Copper objects, especially beads,
and pipes of the different shapes
made out of stone were found in
the pits. Besides the foregoing,
there were pits containing carbon
ized shelled corn and some car corn
six inches long.
In the bottom of the pits among
ashes were found bone fish hooks
and spears bone and horn digging
tools bone beads bone awls, need
les, fifes, grooved bones, copper
beads, perforated unios and many
animal remains. The latter were
identified as parts of deer, elk, bear,
buffalo, raccoon, opposum, mink,
woodchuck, beaver and some of
birds, waterfowls and fishes.
Primitive Art
The skeletons were found in a
horizontal position, usually with pot
tery, cooking pots, and other ob
jects buried with them. Some of
the pottery was decorated with lines,
figures and the human face.
Some of them, now in the Smith
sonian Institute, were decorated with
molded lizards, salamanders, heads
and the human face, all well execut
ed. Many had four handles.
A few other vessels were repre
sented by single specimens. One,
an ordinary pot, was attached to a
hollow stand a few inches high. Two
vessels, joined together, one above
the other, and the upper one with
out a bottom, had eight handles and
a flat, long dish with two handles
at each end.
Altar Mound
In an altar mound not far from
the cemetery were found basins
baked from clay and thousands of
objects of interest. There were two
bushels of ornaments made from
copper, stone, mica, shell and the
teeth of bears and other animals.
Most were perforated for stringing.
Several of the copper ornaments
found in the altars were covered
with native silver which had been
hammered out into thin sheets. It
was folded over the copper. Among
those were a bracelet and a bead,
and several of the spool shaped ear
ornaments.
One small copper pendant was
covered with a thin sheet of gold.
It was the first and only gold found
in any explored mound. However,
in the two bushels of ornaments
taken from the altar mound, more
than 50,000 pearls were found,
counted and sorted.
Mica Ornaments
One of the mica ornaments was
a small human figure cut from a
sheet of mica. Others were the
heads of animals, their faces colored
red by some means. Other mica or

Among the copper ornaments were
scrolls, scolloped circles and pend
ants. About 30 of them were the
spool shaped ear rings.
Though most of the skeletons were
horizontal, others were buried in a
sitting position and some had their
knees drawn up near the chins.
15 Acre Cemetery
The prehistoric cemetery at Mad
isonville covered about 15 acres and
when excavated was covered with
large forest trees. Many of the skel
etons and pits were found under the
roots of trees. The trees were oak,
walnut or maple.
The old burying ground, scientists
say, was one of the mound builders.
But they cannot tell who was the
mound builders were nor when they
lived other than that it was centur
ies before the Indians. Four hund
red and thirty-seven of their mounds
have been found in Hamilton Coun
ty alone. Others are scattered
through other southern Ohio coun
ties, mostly along the Ohie River.
So crumbled the monuments of
people like us and their names and
doings were forgotten. How many
centuries? Maybe their choirs
chanted “Only Remembered—” and
somebody went out and bought a
tombstone, then heard the will read
—and began to forget.
