Days may be numbered for Bluff
ton’s elm trees oldest living things
in town, some of which stood scores
of years before the arrival of Jo
seph DeFord, the first settler. One
of the best known is the big elm in
the Presbyterian church yard.
The trees, unfortunately, are in
the path of the fatal elm blight
which appeared in the eastern states
several years ago and has been

The blight has this summer
reported in Oberlin, only one
dred miles from Bluffton. It
viously was found in Cleveland.
Only method of combatting the
plague thus far discovered is to
cut down and burn the affected
trees and spray others, which has
failed to halt the blight’s spread.
Speaking of elms, that storm
which swept a path through Orange
township three weeks ago did some
fantastic things in the Hartman
woods west of State Route
the Ewing school. One
strangest was a 115-foot
bark ripped loose from a
blown down by the force of the
wind, forming a natural

hold their annual get-togethers.
There should be more of them—it’s
indeed a badge of distinction to
have learned the 3-R’s in a little
red school house and much of what
America has accomplished traces its
roots back to the traditions of self
reliance, honesty, thrift and hard
work which were cardinal teachings
in those days of rugged pioneering.
The Lester Niswanders home
from a two weeks’ outing visiting in
Lake Charles, Louisiana. While
there they enjoyed a day’s fishing
in the Gulf of Mexico angling for
big ones and they were not disap

long fish weighing 45 pounds as well
as some smaller fry and sighted a
5-foot shark near their boat.
