Gen. II avis on being called out on the evening of the 11th insl., to receive the congratulation of hi friends, responded in a Beat little speech as follows : Fsllow Citizens: I hardly know what the facts are in rogard to the close contest we are now closing up. You have always heard, as a proverb, that figures don't lie. It occurs to me that the inun who was tho anthnr of that saying, omild n it htivo boon rsmihur with ele-tion returns in t.Muo, or he would havo changed his prov orb by striking out the word not, snd inserting sotiin other word, so that it would donlare figures ofteu do lio. Feeling the uncertainly of llifl.ic things, I accept your congratulation with some little allowance, Howev er, it gives nie opportunity to say cno 0 two things that, perhaps, I limy as well aay. I shall ssy nothing thut it will be oocossary to tuke back, in case the result should bo different to morrow. One of the agrccfihU fscts in con nection with this contest is wlint has tranpird in tho debates between tho dixtinguixhod gontlonmn who was my competitor, ami mysrll. It bits Al ways bceu my tlcsiro in all political contents, ao to talk and so to act, as to givo no just camo ofolTuUHe to any roasonablu adversary. And I am proud to know by tho public sneeuh es of Judge Thuriimn, thut ho hss felt toward mo, during tins canvssi, as a man foel toward a fuir and can did advoriary ; and I may say to you that that i my foiilintr toward him I feel that, whatnvnr mixtukes he has inado in puldio lil'o, in hi conduit toward me he has behaved like a gen tleman. I Another word, personal to myself: Great difficulties Imvo arisen in tho Second District, In consequoiioe of tho vnenney caused by my resigna tion dilncumos between my friends, which l vory much regret. And 1 sssure you if I hsd kunwn such trouble would have arisen in the Dis trict, I would not havo been a candi date for Governor, hut would have retained my place in Congress. I could not havo supposed any such thing would have occurred between members of tho Republicsn party, prominent enough to havo claims for the candidacy for Congress, as would be adversaries after the nomination by tho Convention ; and not suppos ing it, I knew there were moneuough in tho party to represent that Dis trict far abler than I did. In saying this, I cant no reflections ; the public know how I voted, and advised oth ers to vote. It has been satisfactorily demon strated, that although Hamilton ooun ty Is opposed to oolored suffrage, by Tour or five thoussnd umjority, tnst tho candidate fur CoPcres, and the oily one opposed to colored suffrage in this contest, a mist respeotable and cetimablo gentleman, Mr. Reeme lin, rocoived but ono hundred votes, while the suffrsce candidates received over 20,000. Hereafter no body in thia county can ever riso up and fiud fault with a man becsuo he is iu taror of negro suffrage, because both partioi have indorsed the inon woo wcro no- gro suffrage candidates. CheorsJ Ono word as to tho issues. Tho Union party have been in favor of maintaining Inviolate the faith of tho nation. They will eonlinue to stand on that plauk to the end. fChoers.l Tboy bolievo that the na tional creuu was an nnporiaiii part oi the national powor, in its last strug gle and the good name of tho nation, is, under all eirouutstances, to be lUMittaiocd. Again, tt is probable, from the oomplcxion of the Legist. . .1... .. U . - ... . But on this you may rely that the I'niou Republican party will be in tho future as it has been in the psst tho psrty of progress, the psr ly in favor' of humsa freedom, the party in favor ofeqiial human riuhts : the party in favor of giving to all the governed an equal voice in the Gov ern meat, aod although it is defeated thia year, we rtmouiber that in lSii'i, io tho very pinch of war, we wore beaten in Ohio. Ssid the President, "it is a remarkble fact; it ! the logio of events; it i the truo lesson of the election, and what makes the fact still mora remarkable i that this wonderful discrimination was made by the people themselves at tho polls, snd that these extraordinary results wcro obtained In tho face of tho mis representations that were constantly msdo in the press and upon the stump; and, furthermore, that the f;overnment of the Stalo was in the lands of tho Radicals, and the treas ure of wealthy men was poured out liko water to aid them in carrying tho .State.
