Tell me not that he's a poor man, That his dren is coarse and bar: : Tell me not hi. daily patience Is a workman's scanty fare. Tell me not his birth is humble. That his parentage is low : Is he honett in his actions ? Tht Is all I want to know. Is his word to be relied oa? Has his character no blame? Then I care not if he's low born Then I care not whence his name. Would he from an UDjHit action Turn away with tcom!ul eye? Would he, than defraud another Sooner on the scaffold die? Would he spend his hard-gained cr.rninir On a brother in distress? Would he succor the afflicted And-the weak ones redress? Then he is a man deserving Of my love and my e-teem, And I care not where his b:rlh-l.ve. In the eyes of man may seem. Let it be a low-tbatcbed hovel Let it be a clay built cot Let it be the parish work hou-e Ia toy eyes it matters not. And if others will disown him. As inferior to their caste, Let them doit I'll -befriend him As a brother to the last. A Few Maxims for Young Ladies. Never make your appearance in the morning without first having bathed, if only with a sponge and a quart of water, brushed and arrang ed your hair, and dressed yourself neatly and completely. Keep your clothing, especially your under clothing, in perfect or der. Never let pins do duty as but tons, or 6trings take the place of proper bands. -Lxanune every garment when it comes from the wash, and, if neces sary, mend it with neatness and precision. Do not sew up the holes in your stockings, as we have seen some careless, untidy girls do ; but take in a broad margin around the hole, be it small or large, with a fine darning needle and darning cot ton, and cover the fracture with an interlaced stitch, so close as to be strong a3 the body of the stocking, and fine enough to be ornamental. Stockings mended in this way need darning but a very few times in the course of their existence. Never carry coarse embroidered or laced handkerchiefs. Fine plain ones are much more lady-like. Avoid open-worked stockings and very fancy Elippers. Fine plain, white hose, and black kid slippers, Lwith only a strap or rosette in front, are more becoming. Train yourself to some useful oc cupation. Remember it is wicked to waste time, and nothing gives 6uch an impression of vanity and absolute silliness as a habit of idling and never having anything to do. " If you are in your father's house take some department of household labor upon yourself, and a part of the sewing, and make it your busi ness to attend to it. Do not let a call from this idle girl, or a visit from that, or an invitation from the other, interfere with the perform ance of your duty. Let your pleasures come in as recreation, not as the business of your life. if you. want, to marry, do not court or try to attract the attention of gentlemen. A little wholesome indifference, real or assumed, will be much more likely to the accomplish the " object. ' Consider,'' moreover, that it is better to be a woman than a wife, and. do.notde2rade.y0ur sex by making your whole existence turn on the pivot of matrimony. If you can, cultivate to perfec tion some art by which you can gain an independent livelihood. Do it whether there is a necessity for it or not. Do it quietly, if you will, but do it. There is no tellinz when. or under what circumstances, you may need it. The Crops in England. . The condition and prospect of this year's crops in England are thus summed up by a recent Lon don agricultural journal : : "The wheat in the north and eas are certainly not first-rate. From North Yorkshire we learn that there is a thin and defective plant on the heavy soils, and m the West Eidin the crop cannot be an average ; and in South Lincolnshire and the Great Fen Level the crop may be an aver age, but will certainly be late. In Cambrigeshire ; wheat looks toler ably well ; the same is true in Nor folk and Suffolk, and in Esses the crop is good upon heavy land, but on the . light lands poor. In the southern counties the wheat is ear ing three weeks later than last year. and it 13 reported doubtful if a 11 average can be attained. And the midland counties do not promise more than an average wheat crop even with the best of the wheat, The prospects of barley are equally unsatistactory, the weather havm heen too cold for producing heavy crops. in JNortolk and bunolk the barley looks well on . the highly armed lands, but on tluu soils is defective, backward and yellow, -v . 1 . ,1 jnis, Deans ana peas ten a more favorable tale, , The potatoes came up irregularly, and have to some extent thrown out super-tubers in 6tead of putting up a vigorous top As far as probabilities strike us now we anticipate a rather late harvest that is three weeks or a month later than last year and a yield of wheat and barley somewhat below an average ; an average, however, be ing possible, if we should have 1 settled, sunny July." to at Temperance Convention. A temperance convention met in Mansfield on "Wednesday last and put m nomination a State Ticket, About forty delegates were present, representing the ifth, .Ninth Seventh, Thirteenth, Fourteenth, Seventeenth and Eighteenth Dis tncts. The following ticket nominated : was J. E. Ingcrsoll, of Cleveland for Governor; Dr. Wadsworth, of Cin cinnati, for Lieut. Gov ; Thomas Ed- mundson, of Clark. Co., Treasurer, A. Sumner, Summit Co., Attor ney General ; L. B. Silver, Colum biana Co., Member Board of Public orks. No platform was adopted. a up ma ers a d The Chemist and Druggist gives account of the death of a small child froDi sucking lucifer matches. appears deceased was left at home with a young sister, and reach ing some lucifer matches, which had been carelessly left on a shelf, placed them in her mouth. This, however, discovered until the child was seized with sickness and convul sions, the vomit smelling of phos phorus. The child only lived about hour from the commencement of convulsious. "How heavily you walk !" ex claimed Mrs. Macffhack, ou hearing husband fall up stairs last night. "Well, my dear," -was the gruff response, "if you can get a barrel of whisky up stairs with any less noise, should like to see vou do it." cians nto her. color, It and K. 1 When to Buy a Farm months of July and August are the best in the year in which to look for or purchase a farm. At this -season one can judge whether the land can or does produce good crops, for if it is rich the grass and grain will show the fact ; and if there is an abundance of choice fruit, it can be seen at th3 time to the best advantage. The low land will show whether they are really dry enough for pastures in summer, and the upland it3 capacity for withstanding a drought. Summer is also a very good time to view the never-failing spring and the trout pond near by, and a draught from the one and a lunch from the other are attractions which those who possess them seldom fail to bestow upon those who are likely to become purchasers. Even the weeds on a farm will assist man in determining its value, for if nothing but stunted rasweed and five-finger3 are to be seen, then the the land'may be put down as poor indeed ; but if burdocks and catnip abound in it, it shows strength to produce crops of a high order. The pasture and meadow, orchard and garden all show what they are and what may be expected of them m these months ; but earlier or later the aspect of thing3 may change. In the spring the trees have not shown leaves, flowers or fruit ; the roads are muddy, if ever, and the distance from the railroad station to the farm appears much greater than it actually is, espec ially to a stranjrer. In autumn the leaves are turning yellow, the grain has been gathered, and the dry stubble is all that remains, and the fruit3 are nearly gone ; still the air i3 fresh and the landscape glowing with autumn tints ; but the valuable products ot a iarm are mainly out of sight, being stored in the barn or in the proprietor's pocket. Many books arc not necessary to spiritual enlargement. TJunk more than you read. Thinking expands the soul ' from within. Laborious readers stuff, cram and cumber their souls, and rob them of all their elas ticity. To cat more than i3 digested hurts the eater. Great readers of ten only confuse their minds, and arc like bats wandering to and fro in their own dusky element. Im mortal authors, whose books are as fresh for this generation as for the century in which they are written, were not themselves great devour ers of books. They soliloquized much. They interrogated nature, and nature's own replies arose " in their souls. They conversed with streams and clouds, with trees and birds, with night and morning. They are observers. Nature re wards the love and patience of her own variety. Should Christians be less observant of nature than other men? Who was it said, "Consider the lilies. " Palsfords Quiet Hours. - Uncles Son. "A traveller, over taking small bo;, asked him whose son he was. Boy. Why, I am Uncle's son. Man. How can that be? Boy. Easy enough. You see, Dad died, and ina'in married Uncle, so I'm Uncle's son now. '.: - Man. "Well, I tliiuL you nrftpot far from a fool. Boy. Well I know I'm not, as you and I are only about three feet apart. "My son," said an. affectionate father at ' the foot of the ; stairs, "arise and see the newly arisen luminary of day, and hear the sweet birds singing their matin. song of praise to their Creator ; come, while the dew is on the grass, or I'll be up there with a switch, and give you the soundest thrashing that you ever had in all your born days." llenry Ward Ueecher invites Bonner to come out take an interest in his farm. He says he has thirty six acres of land, which is too muc lor himselt alone. Ye will carry it on jointly, he tells Bonner; will lay out and superintend the work, and you shall pay the bills. When a Scotch minister told neighbor that he had preached his two hoars ana a half the day before, the neighbor said to him, "Why, minister, where you not tired to death!" "Aw, nae,"said he,"I was as fresh as a rose but it would have done your heart gude to see how tired the congrega tion was.' . - ., If you want bone and large devel opment ot red flesh in hogs, give them as good pasture through the summer as your beeves have. It costs less everyway to make a big hog weigh 500 by Christmas than tret two small swine up to 250 apiece. . ..... A negro boy jumped from a train full speed, near Savannah, Ga last week to recover a hat belon ing to a child of his employer, which had been fallen overboard. The train backed three quarters of a mile and the boy came aboard un hurt. lhc .London limes, tor many years, has made an offer of EoO,000 a cheap substitute for paper, equal in all respects to the paper manufactured from linen rags, yet the chect lor the money has never been drawn. "See here, misteY," said a lad of seven summers who was driven up tree by a ferocious ' dog, "if you don t take that doc away, 1 will eat all your apples."
