Sheridan, in bis speech last week drew the following contrast between the positions oc cupied by Hayes and Pendleton during, the autumn of '64. It is eloquent and truthful : "Got. Hayes, my friends, ha3 very forcibly discussed the different positions occupied and Pendleton during the winter of '93. Ilia mod esty prevents him contrasting his own position of Pendleton during war. Let me recall to your mind an incident in the career of Gen. Hayes: Come with me to the valley of the Shenandoah; it is the beautiful autumn of 04, a Septem ber sun shines kindly down on wood and harvest field, and tip3 with sil ver the bayonets of two rival ar mies that confront each other. A brigade of Ohio troops are lying on their arms waiting the order to ad vance. Suddenly the bugles, from all theis brazen throats, peal out the charge, the line grows imbued with life and braces itself for a mighty effort. Through the ripen ing grain the column sweeps forward, their bayonets gleam for an in stant on its outer edge and then are lost in the dense . growth of cedar. Suddenly the line pauses, something unknown before in all its history; through the halting column, a man, compact and wiry, rushes, his quick glance takes in the danger spread out before his troops; a seemingly impassible marsh is seen, and be yond, the batteries of theenfimy. What's to be done? To go back is disgrace, to move by the flank and seek a passage round will lose the battle. His blue eye lights up with fire; "forward!" comes from his close shut lips; his spurs sink deep in nis horse s nanus; riaer ana horse plunge into the watery marsh; on, on they struggle; now sinking in the treacherous earth; now hid by the smoke from th lurking bat teries. At length the shore is gained.- The troops roused .by the splendid heroism of the man, give one great shout, and dash after him; thev strussle through the slimy waste; gather around their leader, and in answer to his quick "forward, dash on the batteries with leveled bayonets; sweep all oposition from their front; then charge like a whirlwind down the flank of the rebel army. Their splendid valor turned the day. The battle of Winchester was won. The man whose nerve and fire roused his failing columns in the very crisis of the battle, was General Hayes, your candidate for Governor. Where was George H. Pendleton? At that very hour he was the candidate of the "peace party tor Vice fres ident. At the very instant Hayes was crowning the banners of Ohio with glory, Pendleton was doing all he could to drape those banners all m white as a token of surrender. Why, my friends, the splendid gal lantry of Haye3 on that autumnal day will be fresh and green in the memory of this Nation, when its people have forgotten that such a man as Geo. 11. Pendleton ever lived. Is there no choice between these men for Govenor. the one a soldier tried and true, the other traitor of the most unquestioned kind? To Doubting Voters. The following suggestions to doubting voters in this and the Key stone State are from the N. Y. Tribune of the 27th inst They are to- ill pftlni. We bes the doubtful voters of Ohio and Pennsylvania before they decide with wnicn . party to act in the coming election to find out just what the principles of the two par ties are. If they can determine what the principles of the Democ racy are in 1869 they will be smart er than the rest oi tne world: and if they vote for that party afer dis covering that it has no principles in particular, but professes two contradictory things at the same time, being all things to all men in a sense very different from that of est Paul, thev will deserve to be the sport of dishonest factions for the rest of their lives. All tnrougn tne rebellion the Democracy denounced ..... . a3 wicked and unconstitutional tne war in defense of the Union and the Constitution, but ever since the war thev have tried to fasten themselves to the skirts of successful soldiers, as they did to Gen. Itosecran s till he shook them off. In Ohio, their foremost statesman. Mr. Pendleton, demands the repudiation of the national debt, by paying in paper what we promised to pay in gold. Here, in New York, their candidate for the next presidency, Gov. Hoff man, insists upon strict payment in specie, and reminds his followers that the only way to get rid of their depts is to pay them; while lam may, at the same moment, demands the disgrace of Mr. Belmont, be cause he favors the same policy. One section of the JSew lork dem ocrats praise the platform of their State Convention as a wise and well considered document. Another de nounces it as nonsense or something worse, and gives fair notice that as soon as the campaign becomes ac tive the party will kick their plat form to pieces. So it seem3 that ioining the party now will be a task of considerable delicacy, reauiring a ay s X J quick eye and a nice calculation of distances. It must be something like lumping off a railway train at full speed or turning a 6ummersault on horseback; it is easy enough to make the iump. but mighty hard to know where you will be when you comedown. . , ' Artemas Ward Calling the Watch. "Fat Contributor" relates the following regarding Ward: One night in New York, Artemu3 was returning to hi3 hotel at a late hour of the night from a protracted sitting at a convivial party, at which wine and wassail prevailed, with a considerable more "was sail" than wiA.' - One of the party was a singist. "Ward used to sing and, as nearly everybody has said since, he sang "Larboard Watch, Ahoy!" with great effect Ward seemed particular impressed with it so much so that he insisted on bawling at the top of his lungs, "Larboard Watch, Ahoy!" greatly to the con sternation of the other members of the rarty. who were afraid that Ward's efforts at street vocalism would result in their spending the remainder of the night in the Tombs. After repeating the "outcry wild" "two or three times a watch- man appeared and commanaea Ward to "hush his biz, and move on.' "Who are you?" inquired Ward. "I'm the watch," was the reply. "Well, I don't want you. You're the starboard watch. I called for I the - larboard ' watch. ' Larboard watch, ahoy!" It required consierable persuasive eloquence on the part of his friends to prevent Ward's going to the Tombs, but they finally succeeded in getting him to his hotel. "Singlar," said Ward, rather thick ly, going up stairs. "sin?'kr these p'lecemen havn't leas' 'preciation of numor. nor ce Oreeley couldn t make em laugh with one of his lec tures." Pendleton and Packer the two representatives of Democratic in tegrity. One claims to be the in ventor, as he is the most energetic expounder, of the scheme for de frauding those who put implicit faith in the promises of the Govern ment at the beginning of the war; the other doe3 not deay the charge of having, by a paltry trick, cheat ed his tswn, connty, and State out of the just amount of taxes upon his enormous wealth. Pendleton asserts his honesty by urging the payment of a solid, haid-money dept in a depreciated currency; Packer proves hia by returning an income of less than one thousand dollars upon a property of twenty millions. And these are the idols of rectitude be fore whom the Democrats of Ohio and Pennsylvania bow down. A most incredible story is going through the papers to the effect that a lady at Preemption, 111., " lately presented her lord with six children at a kurtfa, md-tW thej aro i- liv ing and doing well. If the story is true, we believe it is the first instance of the kind in medical history. What seems to throw an air of romance over the whole is the farther state ment that the husband was "perfectly delighted." Such an extemporized family might possibly reduce a de spairing parent to idiocy, but we con fess to doubting the "delight" under any circumstances.
