(Wich is in the State uv Kentucky.) August 27. 1874. The Corners hev, up to a very re cent date, enjoyed the most profound peace. I bein the only one oi tne old stock wich kin read, our people hev never bin vexed wit'a the Beecber Tillon scandul, and thank Heaven Bascom bez rekovered from the effect of the Croosade, and his grocery Is lunnin; ez yoozual. Pollok and Big ler was tebdin to their bizoes tollably decent, and not botherin uv us very much, tlie niggers come to town only ez often tz they cood help, and, in short, the corners hez been tz seiene as ez an average Joon mornin. The crops was lookin tollable weil, not withstamliDg the diffikilty uv getting labor, (for tlie niggers wuz all worktn for theirselves. and our peopie will never do meenyal seivi9 till they are compelled to) and Bascom wnz reely cheerful with the certainty of gettin sutbfn on account ez soon ez the har vest wuz over. Things wnz a runniu this way till one mornin the nooze reach ns uv the nigger outrages in Owen County, tz well tz similar ones in Texas and Mis sippi. No matter what nooze don't reach us, them uv nigger outrages al luz comes direct and promptly. Immeditiy Deekin Pogram began to get oneasy. Issaker Gavitt began to clean out hi double-barrel shotgun, and Capt. McPeiter appeared at Bas com's with two navy revolvers slung to himself. "Why this war-like array?" I aked. "Why this arm in of yoor selves ez if a deadly and imminent fray wuz impendin ?" Capt. McPeiter replied that there wuz a fiery and wicked devil abroad, The niggers wuz in insurreckshun in Owen county and everywhere else, and it wuz bis unbiassed opinyun that the niggers nv the Corners and visini ty wuz meditatin an uprUin, and for one be proposed to be prepared for it, Tne white race bed suOered enu9 (rom bein ground into the yearth by the yooeurpers, and his blood biled when he thot of it Snood niggers an Inferior race lord it over the proud Caucasian ? Shood their heels be for ever ou our necks ? It wuz the dooty uv every white man to protest agin bein thus, enslaved. And Capt. McPeiter askt us all to take sutbin, wicli we did with tbe alacrity wich bez ever distinguished the Cross It ads. About this time Deekiu Pogram came in. It fa a siu- gler thing, and a providenshu1 one, that the Deekin alluz does come in jest ez somebody invites all present to take sutbin. He is lorchnit in that respect. And one by one all the reg lere dropped in. To these McPeiter expressed bis feers uv a nigger upri sin, and after ten or a dozen drinks all round, the danger seemed so im minent that it wuz deemed wise and prudent to arm and wait for the bust- in uv the comin storm. Accordingly messengers wuz sent out to get seen arms ez wuz handy at their respect ive bouses. The rifles, shot-guns and revolvers wdz cleaned up and loaded, and we waited calmly for the coaiiu uv the black host". But tbey didn't come, and after waitin awhile, Capt McPeiter, who bed bisted in ten or a dozen drinks. sejested tbat tbe best thing to do un- aer tbe circumstances would oe to go and look for the invaders. "This thing," sed tlie Captain, "should be nipt in the bud. Iu sicb matters tz ibis, the heroic treatment is tbe best Look to tbe caps on your guns, and let us hence." AuU takin another drink or two, we sallied out to find the satheiin host tbat bed determined upon our de- strukshun. We wuz a gallant force. By the time we got fairlv under way there wuz a hundred uv us, armed to the teetb. with wen nous offensive and defensive. We diekivercd no nigger till we got outside the village. Ihe first one we saw was a bloodthirsty wretch who wuz a boein corn. He. looked at us and glared defiance, lean in in an of fensive manner on bis bee. One look uv hizzeu wuz suffishent to inflame Capt. McPeiter with rage. "That double dyed villain voted the clean Republikin ticket last fall ef be lives he will do it again this fall." Andputtinhis faithful cuu to bis shoulder he giv one look at tbe bidjus 1 t I I I ff-l I I I I ! ! 4- coolers '." drawed the triggtr. There wuz one feendisu peraecooler less, for tbe top uv tbat nigger's bead waz blowed into an adjinin field. Fortunately there happened to be ten or a dozen nipgers couspirin agin us iu tz many dillerent fetids iu the visinity, and when they beerd the re port uvMcPelter's gun they came run ii in to the spot. Seein the lifeltss body uv their fellow-invader a lyin there, and notiiiu tbat McPeiter wus calmly reloadiu the empty bari uv his shot fcuu, they defiantly fled in every dire k- shun. This wuz enuff. This wuz the last feather on the white camel's back. Ef they wus innosent uv intendiu barm to us, why did they fly ? Do in nosent men fly like hoes-theevts in the nfgbt? Capt, McPeiter gave the word and a pursoot commenced, tbe heroism uv wich h z seldom bin ekalled in the history uv tbe world. Away thro the' korn, over the stubbles, down the gulches, and over the hills we chased tbe infooriated demons. The reassur in note uv the revolver, tLeswisly ex plosion uy the shot gun, tbe clear sharp ring uv tbe deadly rifle wuz beerd iu all direksbuns, proclaimin each iu its own sweet voice that the proud Caueasbn wood never, never, never rent with the heel uvan inferior race onto bis neck. At this pint came tlie caUstrofy wich set the blood uv tbe Corners bi lin. That venerable saiut, Deekin Po gram, wuz clost behind one of tbe vampires, add bed bis shot-gun raised ana a oeau arawa onto mm. j ist as be. pulled the trigger tbe infamous uigger drop!, and tlie slugs and buck shot passed harmlessly over him. lie- fore the good old man couid cock the otiitr barl tbe bloodthirsty demon turned and knocked him down wi'tii his hoe, wich wepun he bed douiitles kept with him for the purptse. Wen Issaker Uavit came up be found the Deekin welterin in bis goar, aud the feend who had thus slaked his thirst for blood runnin away in tbe niostiu suitin manner. Issaker is a man uv decision. His shot-gun wuz at his shoulder iu a minit, and in a second moore that nigger bed paid the penal ty nv his crime. His body wuz a lead mine. Uv coarse after this there wuz no compermising with thesedemons. It wnz a etruegle for life, and we reali zed the fact. Load in our guns and seein that tbe Cap, were all good and liable to go oil properly, we started after em afresh, determined to protect our homes and li resides, at no mat what bazzard. The news uv our comin preceded as, and tbe conspira tor", doubtless in pursoot uv their polUy, took to the woods. We fol iered em ez rapidly tz we cood, but only overtook five uv them. Tnem shot at sight, and them ez we didn't find at borne burned their cab ins. Then come another trouble onto us. We s hood hev cleaned out the entire bilin uv 'em, but Joe Bigler and Pol lock bed beern uv our summary de fence, and bad gathered a lot uv nig gers and armed 'em and they appeared onto tbe scene. Bigler remarked to that the party bad better disperse, and be emphasized bis remark by drawin tbe ugliest navy revolver I ever saw. and kiverin me with it. "Parson," sed be, "ef there is a man yoo in sight in three minutes, this pistol goes off, and yoo are ez dead man ez ever wuz put under grornd. yoo near?" I did hear, aud so did all the party. Tbey wnz irresoloot, and I shivered with dread. Wood they permit me become a corpse? Xo. I owed every man uv em, and tbey knowd tbat the only chance uv ever eettin their pay wuz in my livin. Ef tbe next Presideut shood be a Democrat. offls wood enable me to pay dead, wuz goon ior notnin to em lor any purpose. They wavered a minit Bascom figgered ez to wich wnz bet ter, to let me go and sink wat I owed bim, or to save me and make tbe in debtedness bigger, on tlie chance uv a Democratic success. He finally de cided to chance it, and I wuz saved. They dispersed. We had a meet in the same nite, however, and pledged ourselves to re sist to the death every attempt to snbjoogate us, and to lay down our lives ef need be rutber than submit to nigger rool at tbe Corners, nor allow niggers to oppress us in anyway. The Corners is now serener than it hez bin for years. is PETROLEUM V. NASBY. (Wich wuz Postmaster.) "Lord, what a cow!" was the ap proving remark of a teetotal judge of Vermont the other day, after swal lowing a potent punch which had been offered to bim as a glass of milk. State Political Notes. The CArroII free says : ""With sucb a platform and ticket the Repub licans of Ohio can enter upon tbe campaign with self-resnect and the fairest confidence of an old-time Republican victory." The Republican platform is sound to tbe core. It is direct, positive, and unambiguous in its expressions, and in this respect, it contrasts favorably with tbe evasive, dodging, demagog ical platform of the Lvmocracy. II Vxrfer BepuWcctn. Tbe Ashland Time says of the plat form and ticket: Tbe ticket is a moat excellent one. The gentlemen nominated are all men of ability and integrity, worthy the confidence of tbe men of all parties, and especially tbe men of tbe Republican party. Thus the Ohio Republican platform commits tbe party to a contest tbe result of which, whether for good or for evil, will have an effect upon na tional aaairs scarcely to be overesti mated. All other questions involved in tbe campaign 6ink into insigni ficance in 'comparison with it Xenia Torchlight. The Klyria Democrat says or the Republican State platform i "These are the declarations of the Republi cans of Ohio, and they will meet with the hearty approval of all Who desire to see our Ktate prosper as in years gone by. Republicans of Lorain, it is your duty to put on tbe harness and la bor for tbe next month to secure the adoption of these who.'esome declara tors, and the restoration of the Republican party to the control of the State. It will be done if each man does bis duty. The platform is pointed and direct, and means what it says ; all can un derstand it, the most simple minded need not ask his neighbor for an ex planation, "for he who runs may read." Xo taint of repudiation can be found in it, as in the Democratic platform, but tbe declaration of tbe old party tbat saved the natun dur ing tbe Democratio rebellion, is to save the nation'3 credit to day from dishonor. Read the platform, and vote for it, and (he men representing your principles. Asa whole the platform cannot but commend itself to all honorable men and all well wishers cf their country. No one who regards tbe faith of the nation as worthy of preservation can take exception to it ; and oo one who regards business integrity aa of value, can regard any other expression upon the finances with favor. To the tem perance people of the State it appeals with directness and foree. In the present position of affair they can ask no greater recogn ilion. F. emont Journal. Again, the Republicans assert their determination to put down corrup tion wherever fonnJ, and to punish those who violate their public trust Up in this point the party bas a pure record. It has never filtered or shrank from its duty to censure, coi demn and punish even its own adliei ents when tbey have violated the r sacred trusts. Many wire-working and unscrupulous leaders have left the Republican ranks and Joined hands with iU enemies because they have been exposed 1n their schemes, but the party swerves not an inch from its duty. This is the strongest evidence of the power of self purifica tion and self-preservation. Can we point to such a record made by our opponents? Our duty therefore, : plain. e plant ourselves upon tbe integrity of tbe party, cut ourselves loose from unscrupulous leaders, and trust the honesty of tlie people to sustain the party in carrying out its Ironton Journal. Cooley's Rooster. Shakespeare, yon will remember. 9ays that "The morning cock crew loud." I do not know tbat tbe divine bard Intended this remark to refer es pecially to Cooley's rooster, but it fits him with singular exactness. I do not know what tbe breed was Black Spanish, I believe but be was tbe most animated, earnest, whole-souled. and vehement rooster . anywhere around. He turned out earlier and crowed louder than any other rooster iu tne mate or Delaware. He could crow oftener in a minute be could bold on tbe last note longer, and be gin again quicker than any known Darn-yard fowl ; and be would often wake up in the night and emit half a dozen vociferous screeches in order to make sure tbat be bad not lost his voice since sunset When be bsgan to run up the scale in tbe moruinr. be soon bad every other rooster within leu miles hard at work, and I used to lie abed listening to tbe vocal contest. and observing bow Cooley's bird always goln)orejioiaeijui-af bis iM-vt.u nuv tour oi ma competi tors. I shouldn't have minded it if be had been a little farther, off. and slept later. But when I live along side of a rooster that is an early riser, and has a voice tbat is a cross be tween a fog-wbistle and a steam cof fee-mill, the matter becomes serious. It was useless to complain to Cooley about the chicken. He owed me a grudge for banging bis balloon to slithers. 8o, in self-defense. I pro cured about a dozen small torpedoes and pasted them all over with flour. Then I strewed them on a bed in my garden, whereon tbe bird was wont to disport himself in tbe early morning. He crowed a good deal tbat morning before I came down, - but toward breakfast time I noticed that his voice was somewhat softened, and his vocal exercises less frtquent. When I went out 1 found him standing upon one leg, looking abjectly miserable, mov- ng his head from right to left as If he bad something on bis mind : and I ob served that the torpedoes bad disap peared. I moved toward bim with tbe intention of jamming bim against something, when be suddenly at tempted to jump over the fence. He fell short and struck the post. There was an explosion, and the rooster oh ! where was he ? A couple of drumsticks were found by somebody out in the turnpike, and a stray giz zard was picked up in tbe graveyard. while a few bloody feathers were scat tered over Cooley's asparagus bed and tbat was all that was ever known about it. When this meets Cooley's eye, be will understand why that rooster disappeared, and he had better take the news calmly. No Spanish rooster shall interfere with my rights as au American citizen. Max Adeler, Tbe L-iuisville Courier Journid says of the New Orleans affair : "We do not pretend to Justify the senseless ana reckless outburst of Uov, Penn and his adherents, who what ever their instigation have placed inen)!eives not merely in the wrong .epuiiy, but in the power of a.coward ly ami malignant despotism, which will gloat ovei their folry and stamp tnt m out by tne force or an irresisti ble, muscular power, equally unreas oning aud merciless. -It is bad advice to say to infuriated Louisiana, "aim well and shoot low ; you can not make it any worse than it is ; and, as you are resolved to sac rifice yourself, you might as well te gratified whilst you are at It," but it U natural advice. The letter of the Itw is against them. Tbey are in rebellion against a constituted authority, wbicb tbe federal uovernment is bound to support. Kellogg, infamous as be is, and vile as his gang may be, has only to call for troops and get them. He will do so, and tbe end of it all will be renewed successes for tbe Radicals." Democratic papers North wbicb manifest a disposition to justify and de'end tbe lawless proceedings of the Penn party will do well to study this expression of a leading Southern Dem ocratic paper on this subject. Ex. Mr. Pendleton said in his speech at Columbus, tbat he would keep a re turn to specie payment steadily in view as tbe only sound condition, but he would issue more greenbacks ; al though be said this was going away from specie payments. He means be would keep tbe poiut in view while rowing away from it. One reason why be would issue more greenbacks tbat if we count tbe various forms of temporary debt as currency, we have much less than during the war. But if Mr. P. would keep steadily in view a return to specie payment, would be let go all this progress made toward it, by emitting greenbacks to equal all tbe forms of temporary debt that were paid oft ? Another reason why be would issue more greenbacks, while looking to specie payment is that there was a money panic last fall. But there was as much money at tbe time of tbe panic as there was one, two, three or four years before. How then did contraction, or the I Cincinnati Gazette. A New Haven mother thought she had a model young son, until she dis covered bim recently with a lighted cigar in one band standing on a cor ner. "What, smoking, Georgia?" exclaimed tbe horrified mother. "Ob, no !n replied yonng hopeful. "I'm holding it for another boy." Perhaps is needless to say the fragrant weed went out into tbe middle of tbe street and the boy went home in a hurry. Progression is tbe watch woid of the bonr, but in Missouri mothers haul their disobedient children over tbe knee, and strike on the same old spot that the Romans did 3,0 K) years ago. An Incident with a Moral. On Monday afternoon a gentleman of this city entered the baggage car of an outward boon! tair,nd desiring to read some manuscript, necbosethi.t car because it was airy and retired. A youngster about fifteen years of age was occupying, with great aban don, a chair. Tbe gentleman, wish ing to sit near tbe open door or the ear, to obtain light and air, thus ac costed tbe youngster : "Bub, will you exchange tbe chair for ray seat for a few minutes ?" "No, sir this cbair is engaged." Tbe gentleman was very polite, as be recognized the yoong man's right to tbe cbair by actual possession. It appears that be was temporarily iu charge of some express matter, his father being the expressman on the route, bnt tbe moral of tbe incident we shall give in relating another in cident, which occured in this city very many yean ago. Tberewa? a very plainly dressed elderly lady who was a frequent cus tomer at the then leading dry goods bouse in Boston. All tbe clerks but one avoided ber and gave their atten tion to those who were better dressed and more pretentions. Tbe exception was tbia young man who had a con scientious regard for duty and system. He never left another customer to wait on tbe lady, but when at liberty he waited upon her with as much at tention as though she bad been a princess. This continued for a year or two until tbe young man became oi age. une morning tbe lady ap proached tbe young man, when the following conversation took place : Lady "Young man, do you not wish to go into business for yourself? "Yes, ma'am," be responded, "but I have neither money, credit nor friends, nor will any one trust me.' -wen, continued tne laay, "you go ana select a good situation, ask what the rent is, and report to me, handing tbe young man ber address Tbe young man went, found a capital location, a gooa store. Dut tne land' lord required security, which he could not give, aiinaiui oi tbe lady's re quest he forthwith went to her and reported. "Well," she replied, "you go and tell Mr. that I will be responsi Die." He went, and the landlord or agent was surprised, but the bargain was closed. The next day tbe lady called to ascertain the result. The young man toid ner, put added, "What am I to do for goods ? No una will trust me?" "You may go and see Mr. ,and air. ,and Mr. And tell them to call on me." ue aid, and bis store was soon stocked with tbe best goods in the market. There are many in this city wno remember tbe circumstance and the man. He died many years since and left a fortune of three hundred thousand dollars. So much for polite ness, so mucn ior civility, ana so much for treating one's elders with tbe deference due to age, in whatever garb they are clothed. Now this gentleman in the baggage car might nave been a director oi the road or very influential man otherwise, and aa be i a very observing man and good judge of character, a different answer from the youngster might nave interested mm in bis behalf and led to some future advantage. Bos ton Traveller. We have been at a loss to know whether the Democratic State Con vention selected its candidates and then fitted tbe platform to them, or framed its platform and then Belt c ted candidates "becoming" to it. It per haps matters little what course was adopted, the chief point being to cure harmony between the two. Not knowing all of tbe nominees, we did not quite understand where tbe dove tailing came in, our. ine Hamilton (Butler county) Telegraph throws some light on tbe subject in the fol lowing article, which appeared In tbat paper of tbe 3d inst : xne nomination oi juuge uumore to the Supreme Bench was an out rageous thing for the Democratic State Convention to do. It would be bard to find In all Ohio a lawyer or "Judge" less qualified in every way for so responsible a position. He Is unlettered. Ignorant even in bis chos en profession, and the slave of his ap petite. ineBDerinoi uutier uouniy has been compelled to adjoum Court from day to day while Judge Gilmore was indulging in one of bis frequent and protacted sprees. Tbe Butler County Bar. not long since sent him a petition asking him to exchange and so let another Judge hold Court in Butler. Only a short time ago he was arraigned before tbe Mayor of bis own villaee and it nod tor drunken- Gerrit Smith has issued a Utter en titled, "Our first duty is to keep down the Democracy," and in it he says : "1 am uked by one and another whether I am in favor of a third term for General Grant My invariable answer is that I am in favor of any thing and everything which will serve to keep tbe Democratic party out of power. If his renomination is essential to this end, then by all means let it come yes, and come as often as there shall be tbe like occa sion for it Belter anything, better everything, than tbe ru in that would befall our coun try from the ascentlency of the parly which sympathized with the rebels in tbe late rebellion and with their malignant purpose to perpetuate slavery, aod wbicb still cherishes its traditional hatred of the black man, Tbe slaughter of tbe Innocents still go ing on at tbe South Is due to this ha tred, as was all Ku-Kluxism, as was tbe negro murdering mob of 1S63 in New York, and as was everyone of the pro-slavery mobs tbat disgraced the North. Whether tbe outbreak against our colored brethren be at the Nortb or at tbe South, tbe Democrat' ic party is its inspiration, its soul and sustenanoe." From the Boston Advertiser. 3d. A Good Platform to Stand Upon. The Republican State Convention In Ohio yesterday made m vast im provement upon the average of plat- lorms. and more especially upon tbe average of Democratic platforms. which this year have been made of unusua'ly poor stuff. If the resolu tions on tbe currency question seem rather flexible, they are at least point ed in tbe right direction, and show a healthy condition of feeling among the Republicans of that great and powerful State. The rtsolutions on the subjects of the tariff, cheap tran sportation, intemperance and its causes, tbe reported outrages at the South, and the interests of political and public morality, generally, are concise and not difficult to under stand. On a platform so sound in the main, and so well put together, tbe Republicans of Ohio ought to maintain their prestige without difficulty. To Preserve Grapes Pluck tbe clusters carefully, remove those that are green or bitten by in sects or blasted, and tie them to a pole about ten feet long and so firm s not to bend much beneatn tbe reight Hang the poles with tbe clusters suspended in a loft or cham ber where there la a free circulation. and there let them remain Unfreezing weather, looking over them occasion ally and removing any that have be gun to decay. Then pack Ln dry saw dust in dry shallow boxes, and keep in a cool dry cellar. The French of ten keep them a number oi months by dipping them in a thick white wash, which on drying covers stem and fro it with a thin? white crust and excludes the air. Any one that knows a better way than these will confer a favor on our readers by com municating it to them. An Irishman's Letter. Here is aa Irish gentleman's letter to bis .son in college: "My dear son : write to send you two pair of old breeches, that you may have a new coat made out of them. Also fome new socks wbicb yoor mother has iust knit by cat tins down some of mine. She sends you ten dollars with out my knowledge, and for fear you may not use ft wisely, i naye kept back half, and send you five. Your motnerand I are well, except that your sister has rot the measles which we iqidk would spread amonz tne other girls if Tom bad not had it be fore, and be is the only one left. I hope you will do honor to my teach ing ; if not you are an asa and your mother and myself your afTectonate parents." Encouragement. We publish this mornin? tbe result of a series of interviews held yester day with members of some of the leading bouses In various branches of business. The report Is encourafrinir. Oa all sides trade is reported to be good, and better times are generally looked for. The revival in trade may not have come with the suddenness that some were expecting, but busi ness is on a good basis, and there is every reason to believe tbat a season of activity is near at hand.
