I remember tier well, though I waa .inly . boy of eight, and am ftn old, old man now. Htie was handsome, nUtely, ftod fair as a white crown Illy, and ber gentle, queenly gracious utm won all both men and women though, to be sure, only the men went mad over ber. Lady Ventz ehe was when she came, and Lady Ventz ebe remained, in the rather rough neighborhood which she bad chosen as ber borne. In spite of our republican institutions the people were proud of having a real titled lady among them, some bow imagining that their own per sonal Importance was increased thce by. Ko she was my lady'd, and amply nppiied with the dainty needlework she sought as a means of subsistence immediately after ber advent among us. It was a mystery to the good people of the neighborhood bow Lady Ventz happened to be poor so poor as to be obliged to provide for the wants of herself and her young delicate-faced son by her own exertions, especially as everything about her proved that tiucb had not always been the case. But a mystery it remained. Gentle and gracious as she was, impertinent curiosity found an Impassable barrier in the native qceenllness of the young and beautiful woman. What ever the mystery of ber past, do one ever attempted the second time to penetrate It by a word or even a look ; and ber one faithful serving maid Peggy who bad crossed the ocean with ber mistress, was as ret icent as ber mistress' self. As I have hinted, the men went mad over this beautiful, mysterious widow, who would bend like a pure Illy over ber needlework or follow the bounds wim me uesi 01 mem, utaiug a five-barred fence with the ease and grace of a winged bird. Hut she liked the bunt better than the, nnedle. If her Droud. flashing. eager-eyes, and crimson cheeks and lira told a true storv. And there was one who liked ber ail the better for that, and that was 'Bqulre uusDrow, whose floe gray mare ebe always rode, and who generally ooninveu through all the hot excitement of the bunt to keep at ber side. PeoDie said it was a match : but after awhila it was whispered that Ldv Vents bad refused the hand some squire, and I happen to know that the whisper was a troth. One dav the toulre did lay bis heart, bounds, and horses at ber feet, with a passionate vehemence that brought poor Lady Ventz to ber senses as to bis real feelings. Hbe burst into tears and shook ber beautiful bead sadly, and then fol lowed a long, sad talk, after which tbev shook bands, and the squire de parted, looking ten years older than before mat iaia. During the two months that fol lowed tbev saw Utile of each other but Just at the close of those two moutns a neavy loreigu man, wuu great black seals, reached Lady Ventz. Bbe staggered and turned pale when it was placed in ber bands, and carried it fct once to her bedroom. An hour later she came out with tear ' stained eyelids, out a happy smile up on ber lira. "Godfrey," she said to her little son, "run over to Bqulre DuBbrow's and tell him mamma would like to see him on Important business, if be can SDara the time." And then she went Into the little cottage parlor and laid the package of papers on the lame, and sat aown ana clasped her hands in smiling reverie on ber Knees, r resenuy, trie squire s eten sounded without and be entered the room. As be did at. Lady Ventz started to her feet with a deep blosn and gracefully advanced and welcom ed him. Godfrey ran off to his play and they were alone. "You sent for me," be said gravely, holding be; hand for a minute In a Ufiht clasp. "How can i serve vou ?" Bhe turned red aud pale in quick succession, and then looking Dp at him, faltered : "He Is dead, EJwln my brutal husband Is dead has been dead a year, and they have only just discov ered my place of concealment. For my boy's sake, I must go at once to England." While she was "peaking the squire started breathlessly at her, bis fine face lighting and lighting till it was fairly radiant. Then, with a quick movement, be stepped a pace forward and clasped ber to bis breast. "My darling! my own precious darling !" It was all be said, hut be bowed his forehead against ber fair head, and two big tears fell among the rippling flaxen tresses. In a moment he lifted bis bead with a glowing smile. "Yes, you must go, love," be said, "bat not without me. You will be come my bride to-morrow niorning." And Lady Ventz softly whispered "yes," too happy to say more. Bo the remainder of that day was spent by the faithful Peggy in making a bride cake and other preparations, and In the morning a bridal party filled the little cottage parlor. Lady Ventz and the squire stood aide by aide, the handsomest pair that bad ever been seen in that coun ty. "Wilt thou take this woman to be thy wedded wife " The clergyman ottered the words quietly and solemnly, but the re mainder was cut short by a clear, ringing voice at the door : "If yon please, hold on my good friend," mocked the newcomer. "Lady Ventz will, I am confident, be content with one husband. Per mit me to Introduce myself to this happy party, and more especially to Lady Ventz, as Lord Ventz, the hus band of said Lady Ventz, and the father of that pretty boy yonder." And be bowed with all the grace of a finished courtier, his singularly handsome, but evil face aglow with malignant triumph. "Alive 'not dead !" gasped Lay Ventz, staring at him with white parted lips, and wild eyes. "Not dead 1 Not dead !" Lord Ventz laughed. "No ; not dead, my beautiful, run away wife, but alive and ready to take you both nnder my protection again. And the malignant smile deepened Into aaaiignancy. "Not dead!" again gasped Lady Ventz, her gaze etUl fixed changeless ly on him. "Not dead." be snrueged bis shoul ders and laughed. "That story of being dead was a little romance of mine when I found your far-off hiding place. I thought it would be fun to see bow the sorrowful tidings wonld affect yon, though, by Jove ! It never occurred to me that yon would get op a wedding party for yourself. But here, gather op your tramps ; I'm going to take you again I've the the right you know, my fair Lady Ventz. Put your lady's bat on. Peg ry, and bring the boy, and come along. I must be cfl." The squire, who, during the scene, bad stood like a marble statue, hold ing Lady Ventz's band in an iron grasp, and, staring at ber husband, suddenly reeled and fell heavily to the floor. Lady Ventz, somewhat aroused by this time, turned and looked down noon bim with a smothered eroan. and In the confusion that followed, Lord Ventz hurried ber, with the bov and Peggy, Into the carriage be bad in waiting a little wavdown the lane. Within three days they wereon the ocean, and in three days the squire was lying at the gates of death with brain fever. But he recovered, though only a wreck of bis former self. Three long, weary year passed, and tben one day be received a for eign letter. You can guess the rest. Lady Ventz was free, and ryiuire Ijus brow crcaed the ocean, ami iu due time returned with a bride. AGES OF ACTRESSES. Figures and Other Information About Some Favorites of the Public. Although Starving, They Carry Meat Given Them to Their Starving Master. The recent storm upon the plains was, perhaps, the most severe ever known. On the morning or tbe storm two freighters, James McDer- mott and company, started irom Camp Robinson for Bidney with their teams. They soon were lost ana Be came separated, and on last Saturday Mr. McDermott was round under me following circumstances: He bad wandered for twelve days, accom panied by two dogs, without food of any kind, exposed to the storm day and night, sleeping witnooi sneiier or covering on the cold ground, and bad wasted away to a mere skeleton, lo add to his sufferings, one day he saw near bim some cow boys, but was too weak to ca.l loud enough to attract their attention, and like a shipwrecked seaman who Bees a sail approach, but before It comes within balling distance bears away again and disappears, be saw them pass from him. On last Saturday these same cow boys beard a faint barking or yelping like that of dogs, and fol lowing tbe sound they oame to them. The dogs were also reduced to skele tons, and scarcely nad strengtn to stand, being In tbe last stages of star vation. Tbe cow boys threw them some meat, but Instead of eating it themselves, they picked It up In their mouths, got on their trembling limbs and carried It to their master. And thus be was found. Tbe fact that tbe dogs refused to eat tbe meat given them, although they were dying of starvation, but attempted to carry It to their famishing master, is testified to by man of uaimpeaohable veiacity. McDermott was carried to Sidney, where he Is under the care of tbe post sureeon. with fair prospects of recov ering, although badly frozen, while the dogs have been cared for at a camp noar where they were found, McDermott in his weak state talks constantly of bis dogs, and begs for them to be brought to bis bedside, which wish will be gratined soon Many things connected with the great storm will doubtless long be re membered, and tbe stories told rronnd many a camp-fire; but we predict that the one longest remem bered and oftenest repeated will be tbe story or tbe two dogs, who, when dying with hunger, and the food in their mouths, refused to eat, but tried to carry it to their starving master, Edmunds' Grim Joke. Senator Edmunds says there are bo many presidential candidates on the committee on judiciary, tnat ousiness Is very much behind. He says that on tbe day when tbe committee meetc, Conkling will come in first and find a slim attendance. He win sit a little while, Impatiently, and say : "Well, I don't suppose there will be a quorum this morning, and I have other matters to attend to. If Davis and Tburman would drop their presi dential aspirations and attend to com mittee business we could do some thing." And he will go out. Tben Tbur man will come In and ask : "Where's Conkling ?" When told that be bad been iu and left to look after other matters, be will say : "Where's Davis ?" "Davis bain't come." "Well," Tburman will say, "Conk ling and Davis have got the presi dency on tbe brain, and of course we can't expect anything of them. Call me when you get a quorum." And be will go out. Tben Davis will come in and say : "Well," Conkling and Thurman are absent again. Those two are so -busy working up their presidents! campaigns tnat tney neglect tneir senatortal duties." And so It goes, every week, Ed monds says. Converts to Postage Stamps. A current note In Tuesday's Jour nal contained a query concerning the use made of tbe millions of old post age stamps which are collected. A correspondent is prompted by the question to inform the public of a practice which prevails In convents and other Catholic Institutions in this country, and is almost unknown to tbose outside their walls. All can celed stamps are saved and sent to missionaries of the faith In China, who buy with those worthless scraps of paper infants who would other wise be destroyed according to the custom of the more degraded Chi nese. The many colored stamps are used for tbe decoration of walls, etc.. bv the ingenious Orientals, and are valued so bigbly that one hundred of them will buy a baby whose parents bave doomed It to deatb. The little ones thus purchased are gathered into asylums, and are reared in accord dance with tbe laws and customs of Christian civilization. [New York World.] The Camel and the Weasel. An English crltio says that the world of letters has become so large that it is a distinction not to be writer, ine critic overlooks one point : a new style of writing has England. Men wbo sought for pen pictures and antithesis only in novels. In writing which it has been said that tbe English are pre-eminent, now be gin to look for the same style in jour nalism.
