In the midst of atheism he was not a skeptic. And ho had a short direct way of coming to the point of what ho believed to correct tho unbelief of others. An expression or a gesture would touch tho cetitro of a truth or an error. When on his route to Egypt, on shipboard, at night when tho stars were out in their radiance, somo officers were giving expression to atheism. Napoleon heard what they had to say and with a few words and an index toward heaven, upset all their sophistry. "Say what you will gentlemen, but who made them." Tho results may bo summarized as follows: Of tho varlotlos of corn treated, tho medium maturing sorts (buch us Learn ing, and vhito varieties of similar sea son), are recommeuded for central Illi nois. Thoso have given a higher jlold, without exception, than thoso maturing earlier or later. Good crops of corn woro raised from a medium maturing variety when planted any time in May. Planting at about ono inch in depth has beon followed by larger crops on tho avorago than deeper planting. Corn planted at tho rate of ono kernel every 12 Inches, in rows 3 feet, 8 lnehos apart, gavo a larger average yield of grain than when planted cither thicker or thinner. Better results wcro obtained from planting in hills than In drills, appar ently because in hill eulturo the corn could bo kept cleaner. . No appreciable benefit has been derived from frequent cultivation after tho ordinary time. For tho three years the yiold has been Increased to tho extent of ono fburth by shallow cultivation. Tho plat which had no cultivation after planting, except to remove the weeds by scraping with a sharp hoe, yielded more each season than the average of tho deep cultivated plats, and in but two instances did any ono of tho deep cultivated plats yield moro than tho plats not cultivated. These experiments indicate that any cultivation of tlio soil which effectually romoves tho weeds, and at the same time disturbs the roots as littlo as possible, is tho best; and then on this boll, tlio btirrlng of tho ground beyond what is necessary to kill the weeds is of little if any benefit. " No practical benefit was received. from tho uso of commercial fertilizers. Tlio increased yields from tho uso of stable manuro probably repaid tlio cost of tho application and left somo profit.
